Breaking: 3 Cyril Amarchand partners from Ashwath Rau’s team to also join Zia

Ashwath Rau exodises 3 more CAM partners to AZB
Ashwath Rau exodises 3 more CAM partners to AZB

According to authoritative sources, three Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas non-equity partners Ganesh Rao, Dhruv Singhal and Anu Tiwari have handed in their notice today and will join AZB & Partners with the head of their team, Ashwath Rau, who announced his departure earlier this month.

Ganesh Rao (pictured left) had been promoted to salaried partner level in 2015, while Tiwari (pictured centre) and Singhal (right) were elevated earlier this month.

All are corporate partners, with Rao specialising in private equity and funds, and Singhal and Tiwari in general corporate.

Dhruv Singhal and Anu Tiwari are respectively 2007 NLSIU Bangalore and NUJS Kolkata graduates.

We have reached out to Ashwath Rau, Cyril Amarchand managing partner Cyril Shroff, and AZB managing partner Zia Mody for comment.

That is 5 partner exits from CAM in less than a month. Some big big exits still in the pipeline unless Cyril manages to stop the exodus.

These 3 were obviously going to leave with Ashwath. Ganesh and Anu are his boys and except for Ganesh, neither Anu bout Dhruv could've managed partnerships if Ashwath wasn't there. Obviously, they'll leave. This seems to be end of the story. Let's see how they cope in AZB.

A LEGAL ANALYSIS:

Mistake = Thinking Delhi is more important than Mumbai

Serious Mistake = Asking Mumbai to carry Delhi on it's back; instead of taking Delhi to task - for the failure to meet targets

Grave Mistake = Putting unproven Delhi partners on a pedestal; degrading Mumbai partners, long part of the organization, to the ground.

Ego = Not assuming responsibility for making the above mistakes.

Fallacy = Thinking the above were right decisions. Thinking more Committees = better decision making. Thinking, BCG is there for us.

Error of Judgement = A manager, not a leader, is assigned to run an institution.

Blind Eye = Find all problems in hiding. Ignore those that are staring right in the face.

Arrogance = It's not my fault. It's everybody Else's fault.

Cataclysmic = Their exits won't make a difference. It's business as usual.

Fool's Paradise = We will remain No. 1

Stubbornness - There is nothing wrong. It's just a phase we are going through.

The End = Coming soon

Paying a bomb to those who agreed not to leave - more than what is being paid to home grown people in other teams at the same level.

You make good points but the comment doesn't belong in this piece. There are lots of exits that could've been an indicator of things going wrong but hardly these 3. Ashwath hasn't got his hands dirty with real work in ages so obviously he needed a team. And frankly it's no surprise that these 3 decided to go with him. Ganesh is a real loss no doubt since there's no other funds partner in the firm. As regards Anu and Dhruv, they're hardly even in the top 5 of the GC partners in CAM and are definitely too new to be rainmakers. In fact, people like Shyamali leaving would've made a greater impact.

Shishir is from Luthra and been with Ashwath for a year. Why would AR take him? Shishir is being moved to Ashish Jejurkar's team. Ashish was his boss in Luthra.

To clarify, Shishir was asked to move by Ashwath but Shishir being the confident himself refused to move. While others are chickening out, Shishir would obviously see this as an opportunity. Loyalty has its benefits.

Please give Ashwath some credit. He obviously asked Shishir to move with him. Why he decided not to move is another matter. For that matter, Jaya Singhania also didn't decide to move to AZB despite being a part of Ashwath's team.

Interesting that the seniors are taking that call and Ashwath was only able to convince the greenest partners to move. This, even with Zia's backing. Would anyone had followed him if decided to go independent like people were suggesting in the previous post?

Having worked with 2 of the 3, they both drive matters and can profitably sustain teams on their own. For example Mr.Tiwari recently closed a unique bond default and an MNC stake sale, clinically. To all the naysayers. Yes CAM lost Ashwath and some very junior partners. Let's judge and see the talent left:

Batting line up STILL includes:-

Cyril Shroff
L Viswanathan
Reeba Chachko
Yash Ashar
Nisha Uberoi
Nivedita Rao
VP Singh
Arjun Lall
Santosh Janakiram
Gurpreet Vazir
Gaurav Gupte
Rashmi Pradeep
Ipsita Dutta
Indranil
Amey Pathak

Plus a solid second rung:

Tushar Mavani
Ravi Kumar
Ashish Jejurkar
Namrata Kolar
Shishir Vayttaden
Vandana Sekhri
Smruti Shah
Nikhil Naredi
Shaneen Parekh
Dorothy Thomas

Time to calm down? Cyril needs to reflect and fix some internal processes. Given his stature as a visionary he is clearly going to react very quickly and stop any further exits. And all these are not from Delhi so if Delhi was fixed CAM would be ruling the #1 position.
