Aparna Mittal, another Luthra home-grown corporate partner, defects to AZB

Mittal: Fourth partner to leave Luthra corporate in two years
Mittal: Fourth partner to leave Luthra corporate in two years

AZB & Partners has poached Luthra & Luthra M&A and corporate Delhi partner Aparna Mittal, as first reported by Bar & Bench.

AZB Delhi managing partner Ajay Bahl confirmed her joining to Legally India.

Mittal had been at Luthra since graduating from NLSIU Bangalore in 2005, climbing the ranks to senior associate in 2008, to managing associate in 2010 and partner in 2012 .

Luthra’s corporate practice has seen a number of departures in recent years, with M&A partner Sudipta Routh joining ex-Khaitan & Co and ex-AZB partner Vaishali Sharma nearly a year ago.

Private equity partner Nivedita Tiwari left to join MNK Law Offices, as it was called, later joining Platinum Partners.

In April 2014, Mumbai home-grown 2005-graduate corporate partner Shishir Vayttaden left Luthra to join what is now Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas.

Luthra had hired Nishith Desai Associates’ Shinoj Koshy as a corporate partner in April 2015.

Luthra was ranked sixth in mergermarket’s 2015 M&A league tables by value, coming in at only 10th place by volume or the number of deals done.

The firm had done 15 deals that year, according to the ranking, worth $3.2bn.

That’s nearly a fifth the deals of top-ranked AZB’s 73, and less than a third of AZB’s $10.4bn deal value.

Luthra managing partner Rajiv Luthra had not responded to a message seeking comment at the time of publication.

Boss Rape is not a joke, either of a human being or an animal your comment is in poor taste and should have never been published. There is simply no humour. Assume you are lawyer, its sad that in attempt to appear 'cool' you don't realise how insensitive you are. GROW UP

WOW! Thats quite a loss to LL. She was RKL's blue eyed girl. Wonder why he did not do anything to keep her. Looks like they still havent learnt their lesson. Who else is leaving?

Let the LL bashing begin!

Luthra will miss you Aparna!

It's a pity that such an excellent lawyer, a fantastic personality, and a great mentor after spending 10 plus years had to leave L&L. Luthra’s loss is AZB’s gain. I am sure the junior lawyers at AZB would love you the way you were loved at Luthra.

Madam ji if you knew her well then you would know that she would take offense to calling professionals as junior folks.

I have worked with Aparna during my time at L&L and found her to be a thoughtful and responsible colleague - a star at the firm's M&A practice. Best of luck!

Sharp and detail oriented lawyer – expect that she will be a real value add to AZB’s M&A practice. Best of luck!

Just an observation 24 Feb 2016, 19:07

Whether or not L&L has learnt anything from this, only they know. It's definitely a time for introspection. Possibly, they don't care any more. About their own people. Isn't it obvious? From a place so well known for their work culture and good work environment to being in the news for losing so many good people, I hope they are thinking hard about whether they want to stay in the game or not. Again, this is just an observation.

All the best, Aparna.

Here are some facts to dust off your erroneous headline and report!
Sudipta Routh and Nivedita Tiwari not being homegrown make Aparna Mittal to be the only such partner to have shifted to AZB. On the other hand, Luthra also added Priyamvada Haridas, Rajesh Chavda and Santanu Mukherjee as partners to their firm, apart from Shinoj. Please before bandying about, conduct your research factually.
