AZB partner Nandish Vyas to join Abhijit Joshi start-up in New Year

AZB & Partners 2013-partner Nandish Vyas will join ex-AZB senior partner and CEO Abhijit Joshi who has started his own firm in Mumbai.

Vyas, who was promoted to AZB’s partnership in 2013 and specialises in private equity and M&A, confirmed to Bar & Bench that he would be joining Joshi.

It is understood that he will be joining by early next year.

Joshi had resigned last month to set up a new practice after 13 years at AZB. He declined to comment when contacted.

Zia Mody commented to Legally India in an email: “We wish Nandish all the very best. He is an excellent lawyer. We were proud to have him as our partner.”

The only way these partnership-level exits can be made to look good is by changing AZB's name to 'ACL' a.k.a 'AZB Academy of Corporate Law'. Their punchline- you join, you learn and then, YOU LEAVE! Regardless, lawyers will still aspire for this certification. Good work will be rewarded with bonuses, hikes and meaningless titles and seniority. What an idea sirji?

What else do ya expect from a law firm my friend. Lots of work, bonusses, hikes, titles and seniority(meaningless or not, a lawyer is always a lawyer, titles were supposed were meant only for a heads up) ... Eventually thats the growth line for a corp/transaction lawyer... isnt it ?

muster intelligence- you are asking him/ her to muster intelligence? I don't think a person can gather intelligence at will. Having said that, I agree that he/ she shouldn't have used your proxy name. One should try to be creative even while trying to behind an alias.

Note- I haven't paid attention to the punctuations nor do I intend to do so in future. So grammar mentors on this website are requested to ignore my comments.

Having personally worked with Nandish on few matters during my stint at AZB, I can say with absolute certainty that not only he is a smart lawyer but also a great guy at heart with great sense of humor and he believes in giving enough freedom to his colleagues on the matters, such qualities which we don’t often see in corporate lawyers at top law firms. No wonder he was one of the most popular guy at AZB. All the very best, Nandish!!

Ha ha..like really!! Don’t worry about the quality of my drafts, my friend. They come out just fine. The firm, team and the clients are all happy so you need not worry. Also, I always had people like you to proof read them. You guys are good at that, I must say. A person who is great at proof reading the drafts is always in demand at law firms. Ask around!!

It's a big firm, people join, work a few years and leave. Like they do it corporates and firms everywhere. It's news yes but not every move can be read as a slap on the face of the firm or its managing partner.

Nandish is a great lawyer and a wonderful human being. He was fun to hang with, he was phenomenal to work with and at the end of the day, he was truly an amazing guy. Personally, it a big loss to AZB in terms of its work culture and of course the people who love him (and he is a lovable guy). Professionally, he could have really steadied the ship by taking up the work that AJ may have left behind (and the clients who would have stayed). But it's not a colossal loss to the firm as a whole. The firm will survive, life will go on and AZB will undoubtedly continue to thrive and grow bigger. All the very best to you Nandish, AJ is extremely lucky to have you!

I've done a search of past comments and I don't remember hearing this specific information before, but sorry if I missed it... :)

However, there have been persistent rumours of 2 other partners leaving AZB, but as far as I can tell that's not true, which is why some previous comments speculating on partner departures may have not been published.

Kian, Please try to give more info on the proposed firm to be started by AJ. As in how many lawyers and initial practice areas. With Amarchand being unsteady at this time, this could prove to be a huge difference maker in the market.

As far as I'm aware, it's basically in stealth mode right now, but I doubt that in the short term it will target growing to a size that competes with the Big Six.

Have a feeling it will remain a smaller outfit initially, though God knows what will happen in the coming years...

Will keep you posted as soon as we have any concrete information, obviously.

Kian, it is about time you start calling them the Big Seven. Amarchand is almost certainly headed for a split. Clearly they don't work as a single firm anymore.

Speaking of Big Six/Seven, the others don't seem to have the same partner attrition that AZB and Amarchand has. JSA, Khaitan, Trilegal and Luthra seem to be able to hold on to their partners much better, don't you think?

It's big 8. HSA also belongs in this grouping. They not only have the best infrastructure practice but also an equally impressive corporate practice.

The name partner is an authority in energy law, individual equity and non-equity partners are miles ahead in terms of delivery and quality of service.

What is HSA? Which firm is this? whatever it is, I would be shocked to know there is an unheard firm claiming to be in top 8 which I have not heard about..
