Amarchand Mangaldas has hired Citibank former South Asia general counsel Sandip Beri as a partner in Delhi.

Beri, who resigned from the bank in May to be replaced by ex-ICICI general counsel (GC) and former Induslaw partner Pramod Rao, has 27 years of practical experience as a lawyer.

He graduated from the University of Delhi in 1983, completed his Juris Doctor at the law school of the University of Wisconsin in 1995, when he joined Sidley Austin in Chicago.

In 2000 he joined GE Capital in its US headquarters and in India, where he became country general counsel and head of government relations.

Delhi-based managing partner Shardul Shroff commented in a press release: “As a senior resource at the firm, Sandip will bring to bear his experience to mentor other partners in expanding the regulatory and banking practice, the GC practice by engaging his skills developed while holding in house positions, and for complex M&A cross border transactions.”

Mumbai managing partner Cyril Shroff added in the statement: “We have a dynamic partnership and Sandip’s joining will benefit the whole firm seeking more knowledge of how general counsel are currently developing and changing the in-house legal response to a rapidly altering legal environment, where project and matter management skills have become as important as the in-depth legal skills and knowledge of the laws.”

The firm has also today promoted 13 of its associates to partner level in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, as well as hired former Economic Laws Practice (ELP) partner Yashojit Mitra for its corporate team in Mumbai.
