Cyril Amarchand partner Nisha Kaur Uberoi incredibly close to joining AZB Mumbai

Uberoi: Very likely to be heading Zia-way
Uberoi: Very likely to be heading Zia-way

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas partner and competition head Nisha Kaur Uberoi is close to joining AZB & Partners in Mumbai.

Legally India understands from three sources that she has not yet resigned or made any formal announcements within Cyril Amarchand.

However, it is understood according to two sources that her move to AZB is as good as a done deal.

Bar & Bench first reported earlier today that Uberoi had resigned from Cyril Amarchand to join AZB.

Strong rumours around Uberoi leaving have been swirling in the market for months now.

Her move would follow Ashwath Rau, who will be joining AZB with three partners foreseeably by next month.

We have reached out to Uberoi, Cyril Amarchand managing partner Cyril Shroff, AZB managing partner Zia Mody, and Rau for comment but have received no responses or comment.

Update: Cyril Amarchand, meanwhile, has poached senior AZB Delhi litigation and contentious competition partner Percy Billimoria.

CAM like any top firm provides an individual the ability to grow and showcase themselves. Cyril or Zia or any senior partner for that fact only can hope that a few from the hundreds that come through the door have real talent and the skill set. Be it a Rau or Uberoi, I know neither ,must be good at what they do, hence Cyril showcases them- same goes for any firm. In all fairness, give due respect to the individual as not all people who come through these firms will be stars!

Cyril will find his replacement so will Zia for Percy! Be it a good choice or bad on the move is the individual choice, wish them well. If you got nothing better to say then hold your peace.

Isn't it slightly irresponsible that this is being reported prior to any official reports from the firms or the individual involved?

These rumours have been doing rounds for months. I don't think much has changed in that position as nobody involved seems to have still cleared the air...
kianganz 20 May 2016, 17:11
+3 -2
Agree, the rumour had been going around so long (and been denied so many times) that I'd given up on this actually ever happening and it took even me by surprise (despite the best efforts of several tipsters to convince me otherwise - sorry guys for not believing you! :)

That said, would have preferred to wait on this story until at least a resignation letter had landed on a desk, but our dear rivals at B&B are particularly aggressive these days at trying to scoop us.

And though B&B - as far as I can tell - misreported that she has already resigned, I do reliably understand that it's basically a done deal (although you never know - maybe CAM will pull a rabbit out of a hat and make an offer NKU can't refuse...?)
John Doe 20 May 2016, 17:27

Legallytroll 22 May 2016, 05:19

Kian - this is wrong , why such hypocrisy and double standards. You strike out names and censor comments since they talk about next partner move. What's changed here - is it confirmed ? Then why such a big story. Ahhh- views! Plus B&B broke it first . We aren't doing exit polls here - you deal with lawyers. At least have some uniformity on the matter, Logic will be appreciated to.
kianganz 22 May 2016, 11:36
+1 -2
Like I said, would have loved to have waited a bit longer but once it's on the internet, there's little point for anyone in us sticking our head in the sand and pretending nothing is happening. The reputational damage, as it were, is already done by that point...

In this case, we have it from solid independent sources from different quarters that this is more than a rumour and is as good as a done deal, and that's all we've reported, which still leaves sufficient room for the people involved to change their minds.

We are not interested in India. Our Harvard trained lawyers work on interesting stuff like protecting companies from activist investors like CarL Icahn, Bill Ackman, advising Marissa Mayer on a proxy fight. There is no shareholder activism here. There are no complex financial instruments here. Companies are largely promoter led. Just not interested. Bombay is no Honk Kong

Law School Perspective 21 May 2016, 10:18

One of the reasons for CAM's downfall is their student recruitment policy. CAM simply comes to my Law School and picks up the first few ranked students and then goes away. Its not even willing to hire students who are far more smarter and in the long run going to be stars in the corporate legal world. This method is in contrast to firms like Khaitan & Co. who don't just blindly recruit students based upon their grades but are looking for genuine all round students. This CAM policy is going to hurt them in the long run. Students who are getting multiple job offers are preferring Khaitan over CAM . At least this is the trend in my Law School.

With my grades I would have never made it to CAM even though I have an extremely all round well developed CV. I instead got a job offer from Khaitan&Co. and I think it would serve CAM well to follow the Khaitan policy of choosing genuinely good law students rather than picking up students who are good at mugging.

I have a genuine doubt. Where is space in AZB House to accommodate all these people from CAM. They should convert one of the floors in Peninsula Chambers from CAM to AZB and this might solve the space crunch that AZB faces and relieve off CAM from extra expenses.

in the 18th year of the 21st century after Jesus, two strong 'white collar' teams shall become one. One of them led by a fiesty lady, another by a little brother. They shall bleed in the war before coming together, each swiping away a pound of flesh off the other, and in the spring, they shall wage a war no more, and a new empire shall be born, which shall take on foreign crusaders.

Why is Zia Mody going after Cyril Shroff???
They both used to be best of friends, cross refer work to each other, not poach but what has changed?
Cyril will have the knives out for her now that she has taken 6 partners and 40 associates in 2 months from him.
Lot of disturbance at the top. Unprecedented. Zia-Shardul-Cyril all at war!
On another note, some of the leaves are understandable, some purely opportunistic, nothing known as loyalty? Also people threaten to leave and get bigger packages (someone at AZB apparently got double) - you think those who offer you sweeteners aren't going to extract their pound of Flesh and remember how you behaved?
Crazy people, crazy attitude.

No one is after anyone; Materialism and greed is the major cause of these switches 90 percent of the time.

People don't consider it a profession, no passion just greed. How much do you need after all?

Is this part of some larger game ? Cyril might prefer that his lawyers defect to zia s firm than to Sam ? Do we see azb Mumbai (zia s team in mumbai and bangalore) merging with CAM ? That would be an incredible thing - India s largest law firm with an truly amazing powerhouse of people - Cyril, Zia, Percy and many others known for their legal acumen. Think about it

We are talking about people who wimp are professionals. They give their lives to creating a practice. They toil unbelievable hours, suffer the Lala owners and their wives for years, build client relationships and just hope that they are given respect and are allowed to live with dignity. Loyalty is not for a Firm or a person. It is supposed to be for your work. I am sure Mr. Rau and Ms Uberoi are absolutely loyal and they seem to know that their loyalty should be to their work not to anything else or anyone else.

Cam is the only firm in the market which tries desperately to hang on to those leaving making life miserable for them. Whilst look at how well Zia dealt with Shuva's exit and Berjis dealt with Akshay and Som's leaving. Gracious not childish without threats. My bet is CAM will try and hang on to Rau and Uberoi as long as they can to bolster the billing! Oh wait this time the Percy exchange comes into play. Anyway one hears that there is a big capital markets and corporate partner combination exiting CAM soon!

Can't figure out one thing. If all these people like Ashwath and Nisha, who are being worshipped as Gods and superstars in these comments, are so great and really have the power to lift and sink big bosses like Cyril and Zia, why don't they set up their own shop instead of jumping from one firm to the other?

Good point. Maybe that is because they aren't the superstars they are touted be? There is so much irony in this thread - every 2nd or 3rd person talks about CAM "treating people badly", "playing favourites", "sangeet practice", etc. and then in the same breath thinks that these CAM favourites got to where they were on merit. They, like any other blue-eyed boys (or girls) of Cyril, got where they are because he blindly promoted them. So let's take the songs of their praise with a pinch of salt and really ask ourselves - what brilliant piece of lawyering have either of them ever exhibited?

I will never leave CAM for AZB since they have a non-existent sangeet practice. I've invested a lot in this. We at CAM even have a larger floor space now that people are moving. Please excuse since I have to buy curtains for Roopam.

Kian with all the annoucements on Nisha, Ashwat and Perci leaving what are their exit dates? Are the firms being reasonable or still overly dependent on them and hanging onto them. Typical Indian law firm mentality or mature handling of professionals? Do update us.
