Cyril Amarchand partner Nisha Kaur Uberoi officially resigned yesterday, will head to AZB

Uberoi leaving now official
Uberoi leaving now official

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas partner and national competition head Nisha Kaur Uberoi handed in her resignation yesterday and is set to join AZB & Partners in the coming months, confirmed two sources with knowledge of the development.

It is understood that on Friday Uberoi was in the final stages of negotiating her Cyril Amarchand exit, as reported by Legally India at the time.

We have reached out to Uberoi, Cyril Amarchand managing partner Cyril Shroff, and AZB Mumbai managing partner Zia Mody for comment.

Earlier this month Uberoi was promoted to national head of the competition practice.

Her departure follows that of corporate rainmaker Ashwath Rau and non-equity partners Ganesh Rao, Dhruv Singhal and Anu Tiwari, who will join AZB after the expiry of their notice periods.

Uberoi began her career at what-was-then Amarchand Mangaldas in 2002 after graduating from NLSIU Bangalore. In 2005 after an LLM at the National University of Singapore, she joined Rajah & Tann in Singapore for two years, followed by Ashurst where she left as a senior associate in 2010.

In 2012 she was promoted to Amarchand’s partnership.

The so called non equity partners were not actually partners. Were only designated, which means jack, hence left as principal associates only !

What has Cyril done to get on Zia's wrong side? Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Zia has poached two of his best - Rau and Uberoi.
This leaves Vishwanath, Reeba and Yash. For how long?

Knowing Samir, he is not going to like this at all. He was ruling the roost at AZB as far as competition law was concerned and with Nisha joining in Mumbai, he will lose mandates internally to her on the merger control side. Nisha of course is a old hand at Mumbai-Delhi fractions but AZB is a completely different game as she may not have full management support. She will have to swim this one on her own. All I can do is wish them both all the best.

She is going for Ashwath. As AR was feeding her practice from M&A. Competition always need M&A deals to feed it. So it makes sense for her. Money wise it would not be a big deal. Will be in range of 2 to 2.5cr. 50% fixed 50% variable.

Uberoi has been doing so much enforcement that it outweighs her merger control. Esp since M+A mandates have been lost by CAM to SAM, AZB and KCO. Great hire for AZB.

Money doesn't fall from estarz - when clients start stinging, by offering to pay fixed fee and renegotiating heavily discounted rates - it will reflect in the retainership agreements; if not now, then in the future. One other thing - if Samir Gandhi stays despite this, AZB Management would probably want to involve him in Nisha's contentious matters - to ensure profitability/ cost efficiency and justify the costs associated with this acquisition (presuming that her team also tags along)..

+34 -13
Let me give an honest opinion of Nisha before A0s and A1s with stars in their eyes start to make her seem like the bramacharya of legal practice.

Nisha is good at executing the mandates Cyril gets for her and does not do anything silly to ward off those clients. Shes not an innovator but does the industry-standard job on her matters. That in itself is a big thing given the crackpot lawyers around who piss clients off (eg. [...] at AZ) [...] For big calls she will usually consult Cyril and that has been their relationship throughout.

She is far from Percy who genuinely is a well-networked guy (as Kian has kindly admitted). Unlike Percy she seldom takes strategic calls and is not independent as a partner. In a sense she embodies the new-age CAM/SAM partner who's a glorified associate with a big desk but kept on a short leash. I dont expect that to change at AZB where Zia will monitor her strictly.

Indian clients are loyal. They go to CAM because of Cyril. Nisha's document editing skills and sophsticated english means little to these people who want to see Cyril's name on the letterhead and the assurance that hes on the line. Very few will shift loyalties to Zia because a nisha moved.

Percy's arrival is a far more significant event for CAM than Nisha's departure
kianganz 24 May 2016, 08:12
+10 -3
Nisha Uberoi is much more junior in experience, it's a slightly unfair comparison, as is complaining that for big calls she usually consults Cyril (which is probably the norm at any of these firms with a respected senior partner).

I would argue though that Ashwath Rau commands similar experience and reputation in his local Mumbai market, so you can't just see these two shifts in isolation...

Percy joining CAM would mean a great deal to the Delhi office, but overall in the AZB exchange, CAM is still down arithmetically.

I doubt you will ever get a shot at even getting direct access to a senior partner, let alone a managing partner! I have worked in her team in the past and I am not a big fan of her crazy work ethics, however, she is a damn good lawyer! As for your analysis, you clearly have not worked with her and are making up s%^*!! She probably updating CSS when it's a large transaction, otherwise runs it everything and anything on her own. Take some time and read the submissions to the CCI and you the 'not' so innovate work product! I don't think CSS would be running tell all the current crop to stay back if he could handle everything that you make it out to be. And FYI- client do come to her who generally don't use the firm. Ashwat and Nisha are a formidable duo in their respective practices.

I have no idea what Percy does, so unlike you will refrain from commenting rather than being some disgruntled soul who looking for a cheap like or two on their comments!!

Uberoi was better than sliced bread and the eighth wonder of the world when she set up Cyril's competition practice in Amarchand Mumbai! Cyril is barely seen in Delhi before the disaster of the Saket office. Clients call Uberoi not Cyril for competition work. That is the job of a specialist. Next you will say Cyril does tax and intellectual property. Percy must be15 years older to Uberoi and is not a competition specialist but a litigation generalist. We live in interesting times! Percy's annointment at CAm's national lit head resulting in some cam lit partner departures. Watch this space!

Yes Sir. Please convince yourself that Nisha leaving will have no impact. Cam is literally going 'down under'. Time to wake up and smell the coffee. Check Chambers ratings where she is featured higher than Percy on competition.

Percy in the litigation space will be entirely unable to take on Pallavi Shroff - Delhi is her domain and litigation her forte. And that is the appropriate comparison to make whether CAM's new national litigation head and Delhi MP is any patch on SAM's litigation giant and Delhi MP, Pallavi Shroff. I think not!

On a one year comparison, CAM has fared much worse compared to SAM.

Sam hired stars like Akshay and Shuva.
Cam lost stars like Ashwath and Nisha.

Sam paid good bonuses and made profits.
Cam made huge losses and its getting worse.

Sam has family members like Pallavi who are an asset.
Cam is the new Congress family - vandana and rishabh are running the firm.

And in the midst of all of this AZB and KCO have stolen a march.

Cam's strategy and leadership has failed to contain the losses. More partner exits expected in litigation, capital markets and corporate.
