Cyril Amarchand picks up 2 JSA-Sundaresan-team partners for corporate

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas has hired J Sagar Associates (JSA) Mumbai securities partners Manisha Kumar and Gautam Gandotra, who were part of the team soon-to-leave JSA partner Somasekhar Sundaresan, Bar & Bench first reported and Legally India has confirmed from two sources.

Kumar specialises in corporate commercial law, securities law, private equity, mergers & acquisitions and the financial services sector. The 1996-Delhi University LLB-graduate Kumar had been at JSA since 2008, having joined from Wadia Ghandy & Co in 2002, following a stint at Gagrat & Co.

Gandotra specialises in mergers & acquisitions, private equity corporate work, having been a lawyer since 2004. He completed his LLB from ILS Pune,

JSA joint-managing partner Shivpriya Nanda confirmed them leaving and wished them well.

Cyril Amarchand has been working hard to refill the corporate-sized hole left by corporate partner Ashwath Rau and three partners, who will join AZB

Private equity partner Himanshu Dudeja also left last month to go in-house at Blackstone.

Since then, late last month, Cyril Amarchand hired JP Morgan assistant general counsel Ruetveij Pandya as Mumbai corporate partner.

Smart move by cam. This will restore numerical advantage and diversify partnership (diluting NLS hegemony, high time they start recruiting from non-law schools), much needed. Cyril getz more executing hands. ashwath loss is already forgotten

No, there have been a few examples earlier but associate level. Didn't end very well though.. Either moved back to jsa or moved on soon after joining. Very different cultures. Good luck to the new hires.

Why have we promoted someone to look like a demigod? Ashwath was great, no denying that. But why cant become better than Ashwath? Why do we constantly reject that possibility? Sooner or later all this would topple!! And one must know that you cannot compete with goodwill.
For Gods sake, stop glorifying an individual so much that you start deluding an institution. The dynamics and interplay would continue to happen. Some would do well and some would do not so well.

But the brand is still strong in Mumbai (even with Ashwath going). Rishabh will have to pull even more weight, unfair at some level given the way he has proved himself with Delhi hires, has had his plate full, especially after Himanshu leaving. We senior lot will have to do more business development trips abroad. But every challenge has an opportunity.

All the best to Rishabh. He has all the makings of becoming the next big name in Mumbai (like Cyril), needs support from seniors to rise and shine. Best wishes.

The Churn has begun to intensify. Ego war of law firm Owners, insecurity of the average Competents, the hubris of the Stars leading to non commercial decisions like unnecessary hiring, inflated wage bills and capital calls. Khaitan will prosper, Amarchands will meander until biology intervenes, AZB will lose its lustre, JSA will crumble. A new configuration will emerge by Diwali to which many Stars will gravitate. Did anyone read the latest IBLJ issue? The world we live in with all these recruiters - One lady goes to take pot shots at the big law firms and openly covets people like us to quit our firms! Ridiculous the way these consultants take both their clients and us lawyers for a ride! I say we start an anti-recruiter drive!

Kian - why don't you make your platform more advanced - so that matchmaking can happen here itself.
