Cyril Shroff to open Amarchand Delhi II in Saket next month

Cyril Shroff, Mumbai-based managing partner of Amarchand which is set to split in two, has finalised a lease in Delhi’s Saket area.

Cyril Shroff, the Mumbai-based managing partner of Amarchand Mangaldas, which is set to split in two between Cyril and his Delhi-based brother Shardul by 1 April, has finalised a lease in South Delhi’s Saket area, according to authoritative sources.

It is understood that the Mumbai side of the firm will open up an office on a floor in Saket’s Religare building, on Pt Trilok Chand Sharma Marg (formerly known as Press Enclave Marg).

The office will likely be inaugurated some time in April. The starting team will include local lateral hires as well as several lawyers from Mumbai.

Cyril Shroff was not reachable for comment.

The current Delhi office of the firm in the Okhla Industrial Estate, where Shardul Shroff is based, is approximately 9km away.

Legally India had reported late last month that both Delhi and Mumbai had now registered web domains and been given the green light by mediators to open up competing offices by 1 April, with Shardul in discussions to merge with Mumbai firms.

Mumbai region of the as-yet-still-combined Amarchand includes Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad, while Delhi includes Kolkata, Gurgaon and Ahmedabad.

The Sam firm is also all set.t Sam will open at lloyds centre point . Frantic fit out work is underway . To meet the same April timeline. Initial hires are done and will be in place . Sam is actually ahead . Just because he is quiet does not mean preparation not done. Naval is leading the efforts and has been squatting in Mumbai to complete things in time . Pallavi and naval will run delhi office whilst hildul attacks Mumbai

Bangalore also in good shape.jatin Aneja is in charge . And will be south person for hildul.

Hildul and his team ( Jennifer ) are doing a town hall on Monday 16 th to unfold the plans for Sam from April .

Cam may have lease now but hildul is not lagging behind.

Btw is saket a good area ?

Depends where you reside in delhi. Commuting is an issue if you live 15kms from the office anyway.

Saket is a decent area. And if this Building they are taking up as their office is the same buildinv I have in mind. Then It's a good area. Better than Okhla. There's a huge mall adjacent to the building. All in all its a gud place. But the area across the road is bad. Known as Khidaki Village :p

Wonder why none of the delhi partners have the guts to ask hildul what is the plan on split. The entire world knows split is happening from April. All the partners at Mumbai know its happening. All the partners in other firms know its happening because they are getting calls from head hunters. The ONLY ones who do not know at least officially are the delhi partners . Strange in the extreme. We will leave en masse after the split obviously. Impossible to understand the motivations it has become impossible for us to talk to our teams or to explain to clients. We are partners. Not employees

Hope SSS alias hildul gives the entire picture at the meeting on Tuesday . Or we are leaving in April . We need to know right now what the truth is . From the horses mouth or we will vote with our feet . And take our teams and clients with us.

Other delhi partners please join in. And raise your voice . NOW .

Who should the other partners join? Why don't you designate a tea shop in Okhla where the mutineers can meet, if you are willing to start stomping your feet first on Tuesday?

P.S. If partners at Amarchand had any clout, they would not be treated like doormats. Partners who [s]are treated like family [/s] matter have been given all the info. Big guns like Madhurima Mukherjee, Rahul Guptan, Bharucha etc. departed without creating much dent; so save the threat of leaving with clients. LOL.

That’s some mutiny being brewed. So the threat is premised only on knowing something from the horses mouth, which you anyway know. So much display of maturity on a Monday morning is just what Hildul needs. Clearly you aren’t a partner or if so, Hildul needs to clearly demote you.

It seems like lyril camp has collected all the garbage for its Delhi office. There is a certain lack of vision and strategy and focus is just on creating the presence with some 50-60 good for nothing lawyers, most of whom (essentially the partners) are incapable of bringing new clients (or even maintaining the existing ones) and some of them are purely dumb. The quality of lawyers can easily be understood from the fact that they have been poached from kco Delhi office, which essentially is a dd team for kco Mumbai office and lawyers from Luthra Delhi office who were left behind by there own partners and not poached by any other firm. looks like the poor brother is struggling to get the real talent coz he can't offer good money and get good lawyers.

I think KCo and Luthra are the only Firms out of the Big 6 which have their offices in a good location and close to the main Courts, in the heart of the city. Rest, all seem to be in industrial areas, Gurgaon and where not!

I am surprised (perhaps, not) by these comments of the "son-in-law" being the heir/ leader of Mumbai or Delhi office, etc. etc. What a patriarchal view. Shardul and Pallavi have a daughter who is a partner in her own right, why isn't she considered as the successor in the commentator's view? Do all inheritances have to be left to sons or son-in-laws in India these days too?
Country girl 20 Mar 2015, 05:21
+3 -5
Need I cite some examples of sons-in-law at Brit companies/wealthy families for you to get the point??!! Indians are not suckers for patriarchy - there are obvious instances of that though, but we rather live with that than being subject to your hypocritical, self-righteous comments.
London Observer 20 Mar 2015, 12:29
+3 -0
Yes, please do cite examples where the daughter of the owners of such Brit companies/wealthy families are also in an equal level/position in the relevant field to the son-in-laws, but the inheritance has gone solely to the son-in-law. Even assuming you do come up with one or umpteen examples, I still think it is a shame (and not like I think no one any where else in the world is patriarchal – how I wish though).

Also, I don't have any view on whether Pallavi and Shardul (i.e. a wealthy Indian family) feel that Naval should be their successor or not, my observation was on the views of the commentators. I believe Shweta and Naval are both good lawyers so I can’t understand why every single comment (to all articles) I have read about a leadership position in the firm / inheritance has always said that things will go to Naval!

Making a personal attack against me (probably because I am based in London) is a bit strange – I think you are missing the point Country “Girl” (really?). I am no less patriotic about India than you are; but that doesn't mean I won’t express my allegedly “hypocritical and self-righteous comments” rather than “live with it” like you. Wow, that’s some angst you feel about my comment!

I want to respond to comment 28 from Oracle about KCO Delhi being a DD back office... the deal quality in Delhi is very good..ask the associates/SAs working there.. its not dependant on only what Mumbai gives and unlike Lyril or Hildul KCO partners do share mandates across Delhi and Mumbai and even Bangalore for that matter..second pay scales for associates in Delhi corp is the same as Mumbai..no Delhi discount so obviously Delhi corp is doing well cos no one is going to fund growth indefinitely.. infact it has been very profitable in the last 5 years. Most importantly, if you know anyone in the delhi office ask them how they are treated.. and you will get your answer to why people chose to work at KCo. So clearly not oracle of Omaha..more like the oracle in the matrix baking cookies and talking shit..
