End of Amarchand (as we know it) postponed to 1 May after mediation fails to hit auspicious target

The end of mediation between brothers and co-managing partners of Amarchand Mangaldas, Cyril and Shardul Shroff, has been postponed to 1 May, after mediations today failed to resolve remaining outstanding issues.

As reported yesterday, both brothers had aimed to launch their new separate partnership firms tomorrow, 21 April, to coincide with one of the Hindu calendar’s most auspicious days, Akshaya Tritiya, according to sources.

However, it is understood that mediations were not able to conclude today, resulting in a return to the previous timetable with a deadline of April end (which has also been postponed several times) to settle the mediation and establish new firms.

Cyril and Shardul Shroff did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Tired of reading this S-C-AM updates... Let them just me done with it... If they cannot decide on how to divide a few lousy hundred crores between themselves, let it be known that I would most certainly hold the sum in escrow till they make up their minds!!!

Kian, the note that comes as a watermark reminds me of the "kripiya yahan peshab na kare" message ive seen on many a walls.

Similar to the message you're referring to, not sure if the 'watermark' will work, but thought it might at least make our moderation policy a little more clear and transparent...

You may also have noticed that whenever a comment is not (yet) published it appears with grey placeholder text, which I also hope will make our moderation process a little more transparent.

Yeah. We like this thing abt LI. BnB comes second and LiveLaw last. Actually LL doesn't publish any comments.

Like these two inclusions. Atleast you are doing your part by requesting civility. Then leaving it to the people to express themselves the best way they have learnt.

However, what I do not like is the layout of the page, where the ads clutter up the page way too much. Im sure it help pays the bills so its gonna stay.

cheers

Agree, it's a bit much but the quantity of ads should reduce in a month or two once law school recruitment season is over... For more on the topic and for options, do check this thread:

If anyone's happy to pay for an ad free version of LI, do throw some money our way and I'll make sure it gets done for you... :)

We here that it has been indefinitely postponed as the terms of settlement are not agreeable to senior partners in CAM.

Kian,

I think everyone is quite sick of CAM/SAM. Its going to happen - no one cares now. Anything else thats interesting? Foreign Law Firm updates maybe? An interview with India desk head of a foreign law firm may be more interesting at this juncture. Just a thought!

Hehe, it has been getting just a tad repetitive hasn't it? Unfortunately we also can't *not* cover it, especially since our dear rivals are apparently more excited about this story than I've ever seen.

That said, once it's all done and dusted, it is a story that has (and will have) major repercussions for the entire industry, so interest is also warranted.

Will heed your advice and try and find some time for other interesting things from law firm land though. :)

Enough of this CAM-SAM, now!
Kian, updates such as this one and the previous one are really not required.
You don't have to play by your opponents' rules, necessarily. You reported the previous one which had no substance. But, because it gave a date for an event, you were naturally compelled to publish this one, too. Like this, there's no end. You don't have to necessarily do everything that your opponent is doing, specially when it is something so unimportant. It's not just that such reports are boring and reflect badly, it's the other stuff that you probably skip and neglect because your energies are focused on this. Be a little more holistic in your approach to 'legal reporting', rather than focusing on specific firms/ events, excessively.

All we reported was that they were aiming for the mediation to end by then, which did have substance and solid sourcing, though events often get in the way of intentions... :)

In any case, all evidence points to this now being the home straight in this stage of the CAM-SAM saga and we'll be able to get back to non-CAM-SAM news too...

I like the fact that there is a human face to LI in Kian. Can't say the same about your rivals. BTW, there's a lot happening elsewhere that involves Indian lawyers (i.e., India desks of foreign law firms) - a little coverage on that would make interesting reading.

We all know who wil win but sholay was still fun even when we sort of knew gabbar will lose. He who is a flatter-friendly poet,he who has mummy-wealth,he who can make politics so older partners dance on glass like dhanno is he who will...(self-edited).

Headline suggestion for May, 1 - "Cyril Amarchand /Shardul Amarchand, since May *, 2014". Someone's really got to screw that obnoxious "Founded in 1917" tag.

Kian, would it be possible for you to name the partners who would be moving to Delhi from CAM's bbay office? I doubt the plan is to only make the new partners run the Delhi office.
kianganz 22 Apr 2015, 06:49
+0 -0
I don't think any partners are moving right now. I don't know if it's an explicit non-compete cooling off period for a few months, but that would make sense so the firms don't start butchering each other while they're setting up?

What is your definition of "right now"?

And who from Okhlaa is coming to Mumbai for SAM?

This is getting really old now. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if they decide to postpone it YET again.
