Rao released

The notice period of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) partner Ganesh Rao, who has been handing over matters at the firm since resigning together with partner Ashwath Rau, Anu Tiwari and Dhruv Singhal for AZB & Partners around 23 April, is now also over.

Ganesh Rao’s last day at CAM is scheduled for Monday (4 July) and he will start on Tuesday at AZB & Partners, after Rau, Tiwari and Singhal had their notice periods reduced on 1 June via a deal struck between AZB and CAM, as CAM had hired AZB Delhi senior partner Percy Billimoria.

Ganesh Rao, who specialises in investment funds and asset managmenent, will be joined by a team of five of his CAM fee-earners at AZB; Ashwath Rau and the other partners’ team numbering 20 to 25 fee-earners had been released from CAM on 31 May already.

Rao declined to comment when contacted.

It is understood that CAM partner Nisha Kaur Uberoi, who resigned on 23 May for AZB, is still serving out her notice period.

In 2014, what-was-then Amarchand Mangaldas Mumbai released partner Abhimanyu Bhattacharya for Khaitan & Co after four months, after initial threats by Amarchand that he would be made to serve his full six month notice period.

do Associates also have a notice period? I know they're technically not employed, just retainers.

what must be the value of Aswath's book? Just curious. I am a litigator, don't have a book, have an akhbar. Value is 3.50 Rs.

Who will join CAM with these kind of unpleasant exits? The longer CAM hangs onto partners who have resigned the greater is the reinforcement of the fact that CAM clearly has no alternatives for these partners.

When is Nexit happening? Assume CAM will try and retain Nisha as long as they can!

'Released' sounds like as if he was in jail for a crime that he never committed or was being held as an undertrial. Kamaal ka zamana hai aajkal, how words are being used these days in the professional services sector.

Other Firms seem to have similar contracts but a different understanding of contract law and market practice!

CAM always maintained a balance of good talent and sycophants which is not unusual in case of a family run firm. But from recent events it seems like AZB has picked only the merit from CAM and has left off the lackies to bear the brunt of actual legal work. Lyril must bring his house in order (and I don't mean forming another committee).
