Former Juris Corp partner and Chennai head Hufriz Wadia yesterday joined Kochhar & Co as a partner in its banking and finance, corporate and capital markets practice in Chennai.

Confirming that she had been in talks with Kochhar since before leaving Juris Corp, Wadia said: “There is enough banking that happens in Chennai. The benefit that I have now is that there is a robust practice already. [Kochhar] is a well-established firm with a big practice already so it is far easier to bring in banking clients here. It has a good setup in Chennai.”

Wadia said that the “traditional” Chennai market where corporate clients preferred senior counsel and were not open to law firms, had changed. “It is getting easier,” she commented.

Wadia will not specialise in Islamic Banking as she did for Juris Corp, using her past experience at Dubai law firm Al Tamimi & Co. Though she said she will help with Islamic banking work for Kochhar’s Dubai office when required.

Kochhar & Co managing partner Rohit Kochhar said in a press release: “I am delighted to welcome Hufriz on board and am confident that she will make a valuable contribution to the Kochhar Chennai office and will help us consolidate our leadership position in Tamil Nadu.”

She had announced her resignation from Juris Corp seven months after heading the newly established Chennai practice of the firm. She exited in October having joined the firm in January 2013. She told Legally India that the firm was in the process of “organising something” for the Chennai office at the time of her exit. Juris Corp was not reachable for comment at the time of going to press.

Kochhar has 30 lawyers in Chennai including 5 partners, 15 corporate banking associates and the rest involved in litigation work, she explained adding that the firm had no practice head in the city.

The firm hired four lateral partners in May, most recently.

So still JC has Chennai office? And if yes who is heading the same either Mr. Jayesh himself or someone else? All long associates of JC have left them. How is handling Islamic finance and derivatives in JC?

JC was a great organisation. It had great work and nice people (barring a few). It saddening to read every few months about the downward slide of JC.

JC never had a Chennai Office Hufriz Wadias residence was JCChennai Office ( see JC profile there is only a tel no no address..) Same thing had happened with Priyanka Kasat two years ago When she moved to London JC UK office was her house. When she resigned end of JC London Office SAme fate for JC Chennai office

Yes but it is not saddening.It is inevitable given their shabby treatment of their people and those who have been insulted, treated shabbily, pay witheld on the flimsiest pretext and forced to leave JC will feel very happy that the firm has got itsjust desserts

The above quote from the writeup clearly shows how frustrated Partners are with JC HR policy. They leave long before another job offer comes when frustration at Juris Corps becomes intolerable

I understand that there is some loopholes in JC HR Policy and management. One more thing is Centralisation of power which is very obvious in one man dominating place like JC. Jayesh has to really address some issues if want to maintain the pace of his firm movement otherwise JC will also become Old Law Schools like other (No need to point out the name)

Elementary my Dear Watson it is JC HR Policy and HR policy alone that is to blame. Even after people leave they harbour ill will and resentment towards it due to being very shabbily treated and rubbed the wrong way. Flight of talent from JC speaks for itself

Nobody is handling Chennai Office which is history like the London Office. With Hoshedar gone Derivatives practice has also taken a beating. Earlier with VAndana Freddy and Huzefa gone PE, Tax and litigation either stopped or severly reduced All thanks to JC HR!

perhaps you don't know, most of the international banks have decided to shift their HQs to chennai after 2014 general elections ;-). I know this personally because I sell chhole bhature before RBI offices.

Until 2011 Juris Corp was a great firm and possibly one which could have given AMSS or AZB a run for its money at the rate it was expanding. Sadly they brought in very bad HR and people unfriendly policies with the result that its top talented partners and seniors all rushed for the exit especially Huzefa, Vandana and Freddy who had great reputation and goodwill in the legal services market . Alongside them most of their extremely talented and experienced seniors also left until in 2013 Juris Corp was an empty hollow shell of its former shelf However instead of mending its ways it buried its head in the sand as if nothing had happened and continued with its horrendous HR till now when it is a butt of jokes and losing ground even to small practitioners and firms

Very Sad downfall only due to bad HR and HR alone
