Juris Corp loses former merger partner Motiwala

Mustafa Motiwala, who joined Juris Corp in 2011 with his firm AM Law, has resigned as a partner at the firm, reported Bar & Bench.

He was in charge of commercial, dispute resolution, intellectual property and real estate.

In a little over a year, Juris Corp has seen the departure of Chennai head Hufriz Wadiaj, Hoshedar Wadia and Anil Jarial, Fraser M, after a string of departures in 2012.

I actually thought by reading the headlines that Mustafa had -

(a) expired
(b) been handling mergers.

But on a serious note, on a deep look at what's left in JC, it seems that most of the residue of "lawyers" are tier- three law school and tier-three law firm rejects... Pity... Wonder what went wrong here...

The moral of these departures is simple. If you keep too much of closed structure on profit sharing, then only those who lack ambition will continue to stay in the long run. This does not mean that you won't retain good lawyers - there are a ton of lawyers who are great at their work and don't necessarily have the ambition of starting something on their own or believe in the security of a fixed, albeit lesser, monthly payment. What this means is that as a firm you will stagnate and not see real growth as the good lawyers who stay, don't have the motivation to get new work for the firm - and why should they? They are after all merely employees.

Not just that... if you want to have partners, you need to treat them as such, encourage independent decision making and enterpreneurship... if you maintain a stifling over-controlling atmosphere you wont get anywhere.
