Khaitan & Co has become “the first Indian law firm to reach the milestone of 100 partners”, according to a press release from the firm.

Almost all partners were “either home-grown or have spent substantial number of years at the firm”, the firm stated in a press release, and maintaining a “significantly low partner to associate leverage ratio” (i.e, fewer associates per partner) was “paramount” to ensuring client satisfaction.

Amarchand Mangaldas, a firm of “about 700 lawyers” according to a Delhi press release from 19 February 2015, has 84 partners.
However, the firm that is in the midst of a break-up in two, had internally agreed that 14 new equity partners and 26 new salaried partners would be promoted.
The new salaried partners would have taken Amarchand’s partner headcount to around 124 110, excluding upcoming lateral hires, though no official internal or external announcements about internal promotions or lateral hires have yet been made from neither Mumbai nor Delhi sides.
In the Mumbai region of Amarchand, 12 new salaried partners and seven equity partners would be promoted, and in the Delhi region seven new equity partners and 14 salaried partners.

Promotions took place even when there was no imminent split of AMSS and they will continue to take place just the same, always.
This is an encouraging move by Khaitan and let's just give credit where it's due.
I don't think these big Firms really care that much about the effect/ after-effect or whatever the hell effect of the AMSS split as much as LI readers do.
However, the firm in itself has neither done anything special in the market nor built a superior reputation, despite the noise they generate. Now by making almost every PA a partner, they seem to have developed the same haunted feelings.
Think its time they started building a market name with solid partners rather than becoming a law firm equivalent of a hot air balloon.

Amazed at the pace at which people come after any firm that aspires to challenge AMSS and AZB. What's in it for you, dude? Were you also rejected by Khaitan? Emergence of a Khaitan or any other firm will open more options for all legal professionals. And couple it with opening of Indian legal sector, we all should have no reasons to complain!
I am with you on emergence of real options for legal professionals. But is KCo actually one of those real options? If it were, at least a few stars from AMSS / AZB would have joined them and I am happy to be corrected on this for I don't know such names. KCo should aim to become a real option for exciting legal talent and not just a challenger to who seem to already have it. The current move may not be an ideal step towards that direction.

If a firm like KCO wants to prosper with greater distribution of profits amongst its partners and associates- there is nothing wrong with that and it rather sets the trend for the others.if you ask me, yes that's the ideal market according to me.
Furthermore, they are able to offer fat pay cheques because they are able to bill big, which is an obvious outcome of bagging big clients and transactions. Nobody pays big bonuses out of their own pocket.
If gnereous distributions and good work are not the determinants of a real choice, then i don't know what is.

since none of these numbers inlcude fresh lateral hires, youve basically listed internal elevations. then, it would be fair to say that the new batch of equity partners to be is already at salaried partner status?
then to count how many partners amss would have made, you count only the new salaried partners I.e. 26.
total partner count would have been 84 + 26 = 110. not 84 + 40 = 124.
even then, admittedly, the number would have been higher than khaitan.

The AMSS track is equity or non equity? noticed that for KCO you have equity, non-equity, common etc.
Also, would you happen to know what the total lawyer count at KCO is now going to be? Will be bigger than a divided AMSS?
