Khaitan & Co closes PXV acquisition with 8 associates for ‘strong synergies’ & ‘specialist experience’

Khaitan & Co has completed its acquisition of the practice and teams of three co-founding partners of PXV Law Partners.

According to a press release from Khaitan, Deepto Roy in Mumbai, and Mohit Abraham and GT Thomas Phillippe have now joined as associate partners in the two cities.

Eight of their associates will also join Khaitan after a “merit driven recruitment process”, confirmed a Khaitan spokesperson.

According to Legally India’s report of early July, their teams consisted of around 15 associates, of whom half were expected to join.

In the meantime, PXV partners Pingal Khan in Mumbai and Bangalore and Souvik Bhadra Kolkata started up Ashlaw Law after PXV was dissolved, as reported by Legally India last week.

Khaitan & Co did not provide a comment at the time of the initial report about the strategy behind the acquisition, but Khaitan Mumbai partner Rabindra Jhunjhunwala commented in the press release: “On behalf of the firm, I am delighted to welcome the PXV team to the Khaitan & Co fold.

“Their practice is an excellent fit and have strong synergies with the growth strategy of Khaitan & Co in all offices. Our new partners bring with them some vital and specialist experience and we are confident this will not only help maintain the firm’s momentum, but build on its reputation.”

The hires would particularly help in its energy infrastructure and resources, dispute resolution/litigation and corporate law practices, according to Jhunjhunwala.

This is indeed a very good acquisition by Khaitan. Deepto and Mohit are proven performers. All the best to them. All the best to the erstwhile Partners of PXV, Pingal Khan Bhaduri and Souvik Bhadra as well.

As kian himself has clarified by his comments in previous articles .. Apparently the only reason he emphasis on khaitan in various articles is because they keep giving him these so called updates/news .. Which a firm with no work can and shd do.. The other firms are just too busy working on the matters they have. Judging the progress of a firm by Li articles? Not the right way to go..

Kian, you are obsessed with these guys! Looks like every time readership of your website goes down, you run a story on these guys or refer to them in some story to attract some comments! Hopeless.

LI likes start-ups, so do a lot of our readers, clearly.

So yes, we do cover what happens in start-ups and young firms disproportionately.

If you don't like reading about start-ups, please feel free not to click on those stories. Best wishes,
Kian

Why so angry yaar? :)

People were wondering in the first story what would happen to the associates, and what the strategic impetus to the merger is.

We've shared how many associates are joining now, confirmed, and shared a quote from KCo about it apparently being an acquisition of expertise at least in most part, as I'd speculated in the previous comment.

Aren't half of these associate recruits fresh from law schools? In the articles indicating law firm recruitments it was clarified that pxv's new recruits would join KCO instead..

Is there anyway of knowing how many associates were left out and why? Whats the story about S&P? They did not join voluntarily... Kian time to put your investigative boots on and not just reproduce a press release....

Kian, why do you love these guys so much? Can't recall separate signing and closing reports for any of the other startups being acquired ;-) Did these guys sponsor any of the LI social events? Or is it because Madhurima to AZB scoop did not attract the kind of vitriol you hoped for? Look forward to your report on PXV team's first anniversary at Khaitan.

Khaitan I think u have got ur money's worth out of this news item.. Back to the drawing board with the marketing team..
kianganz 19 Aug 2014, 16:09

To be completely fair, Khaitan sends out its press release to a whole range of publications and contacts, including us.

So, just before we picked up the first news item before the press release, doesn't mean that they press released it for the sole purpose of having us write it again, but more likely so that other websites and print publications that hadn't covered it yet, would pick it up...

However, I was genuinely interested that the move had wrapped up so quickly and about the aforementioned associates.

Why does LI give so much coverage to PXV lawyers? A complaint should be made to the Press Council and Justice Katju seeking an investigation into whether this is paid news.
Guest 20 Aug 2014, 06:01

Perhaps it is not paid news but just LI's way of attracting attention :-) Almost all the comments here are about LI's reporting style and manner.
