Counsel/Of-Counsel?! 27 Apr 2015, 13:01
+4 -2
Kian, if you could elaborate on the positioning of Counsel/Of-counsels in the various law firms in India. I believe Trilegal has the Counsel designation, so does its peel-off Phoenix. JSA seems to have the Of-Counsel designation, at which designation Kannan was recruited. How does it work? What is the difference between a Retained Partner and a Counsel? Are Counsels/Of-Counsels considered to be parallel track or are they part of mainstream designations? Are Counsels at par with PAs or are they positioned somewhere between RPs and PAs? If you could throw some light on this issue, either in this comment thread or as a separate article.. Will be quite interesting to read..

I reckon at a Firm like KCO, one makes a Senior Associate in 3-4 years' PQE. Can someone tell me how much is a freshly designated SA get paid?

Kian, either add an 'edit' button or please take the pains to correct minor, inadvertent errors in the language yourself. ;)

If you create an account on LI then you can edit your old posts and you don't need to wait for moderation in comments too.

As it is, are you really going to make me proofread every single comment for typos? ;)
Package & HR 27 Apr 2015, 13:05

The package KCO offers is quite competitive but with seniority the difference wrt package at AMSS (before the split) would become evident.

On the issue of HR, I think there has been a complete overhaul. It was much needed. Hopefully the new HR team acts as a much better medium of communication between the top management and the rest of the lawyers and is able to avoid the game of Chinese whisper which the previous HR team would play(by adding a lot of their own tadka).

Fresher salary at KCO is 16.2 L, inclusive of bonus, as reported by LI. That's PQE 0.
Can someone tell me how much would be the increment after a year's time? That is, how much is a PQE 1 paid at KCO?

This table might be quite useful from 2012 (so need to adjust for changes a little, but it gives you an idea of increments from year-to-year):

So, that would be a 8 - 10% increment after the first year. Hmm.. Not much.

Complete facade! It can't be this low, particularly going 3+ PQE onward, or does this only reflect basic (i.e. minus bonus)...way for firms to show this list to negotiate lower salaries I reckon?!

Are you blind? The table is from 2012. Of course, it's higher, now. Kian just posted it to give an idea as to the percentage of increment every year and not the amounts.

Wow. greatl to know they have rehauled their HR. During my time at KCO, I had the worst experience with the HR. They would constantly gossip and if you ever tried to tell them something was wrong- instead of treating it confidentially they would promptly go tell the partner.
