Tax head Aseem Chawla quits Amarchand

Exclusive: Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi partner and head of tax Aseem Chawla has resigned, as the firm aims to refill the gap in its ranks.

Amarchand Delhi managing partner Shardul Shroff confirmed that Chawla would leave in the second week of July.

“We wish him well… Aseem has been an asset to the firm,” he said.

“We are searching for substitutes.”

Chawla qualified as a lawyer in 1998 from the University of Delhi and is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

According to several sources, Chawla may join a chartered accountancy firm.

Chawla declined to comment on his plans and his departure when contacted.

Amarchand plans to double in size to 1,000 lawyers and 100 partners by 2017, under a new firm strategy.

In 2010 chartered accountant and tax lawyer DD Nageswar Rao had joined Amarchand Delhi as a partner in the tax team, that included Chawla and then principal consultant (designate) Gagan Kumar. [Update: Legally India has confirmed that Rao is not with Amarchand anymore]

Eleven associates from litigation have also quit AMSS. Another 10 have quit from Corp. All this in the past month.

The departure of Aseem Chawla is a big loss for AMSS. AMSS should review policy that whether in pursuit of being a 1000 lawyer strong is it losing out on the base of organization....??? Also, AMSS should rather look into model adopted by JSA and try to depart from the major stake (nearly 50%) possessed by the Shroff family.....that may help in retaining the ppl like Aseem ........!!

AMSS should also learn from other 'largest' law firm which effectively implements 'locksteps' to lock the steps of its people from going out.

Aseem is not a real loss for a big firm like AMSS. There are already substitutes within the firm, senior, same-level and junior. The firm is evolving and they are getting more serious about tax now esp post-Voda. When they took him on, it was boom years and it was just a side practice. Good for Aseem, he got a good deal out of AMSS while he was there given his past pedigree was nothing stellar.

Aseem joined Amarchand in 2005 alone without a team. Single handily he developed both the direct and indirect tax team.It is recommendable how the tax team developed and grew unlike other law firms who after Amarchand setting up of tax team geared up on the idea of setting their own tax practise but could not expand as the tax team at Amarchand did.

If not a tax expert but definitely Aseem is a brilliant manager!!
