AZB scoops Wadia Ghandy partner Anand Shah & team on partnership track

Anand Shah: New Year start at AZB
Anand Shah: New Year start at AZB

Wadia Ghandy partner Anand Shah, with his team of four associates, will join AZB & Partners in the New Year as a senior associate on partnership track.

Anand Shah, who was promoted to Wadia Ghandy’s partnership in July of this year with two others, will join AZB in late January 2014, confirmed AZB Mumbai senior partner and CEO Abhijit Joshi.

Joshi said that it was a win-win for AZB and Anand Shah: “He comes with a very good quality of knowledge base and great value system.”

He added via email: “Anand and his team will augment our corporate M&A and banking and finance practice. Anand joins us with a defined track to partnership and we look forward to a long association and friendship with him and his team.”

Anand Shah became a Bombay Incorporated Law Society solicitor in 2009 and graduated from GLC Mumbai in 2007. It is understood that he did not join as a partner because AZB operated a longer partnership track than Wadia Ghandy.

He will be joined at AZB by four of his Wadia Ghandy associates, including senior associate Shriram Shah who was also promoted in July.

Wadia Ghandy managing partner Ashish Ahuja commented via email: “I do wish him and the team all the best in their new endeavours. It’s unfortunate that AZB has not taken him as a partner. I know Anand would have loved to stick on, but it just did not work for many reasons.”

In response to the question of whether clients would join Anand Shah, Ahuja said: “I believe clients go wherever they get the best work quality and ethic. So I guess time will tell. Wadia Ghandy had been known for its outstanding work quality and will continue to be known for that.”

Anand Shah declined to comment when contacted.

Has Wadia ever lost a partner to another firm before?
Seems like market is improving with senior level movements

I believe that the other three leaving with Anand are Sarah Mohan, Prateek Desai and Ishan Handa. I have acted opposite Sarah in the past and she seems extremely intelligent and capable. Good move by AZB!

Congratulations Anand and all the best. Very mature quote by Ashish-)Also, if he is on partnership track, what designation does he have now. Strange how AZB did not hire him directly as partner where he was already partner at Waddies Baddies.

It is not strange that he hasn't joined as a partner. As we all know different firms have varying standards on who they make partner and importantly what partnership actually means. I have no doubt that Anand will make more money as a senior associate in AZB than he would as a partner at WG. Additionally, if and when he does make partner in AZB, it will be closer to what a real partnership ought to be than what he was as a partner in WG. Ideally a partner should be entitled to profits of the partnership.

As to why he wasn't taken in as partner, probably because the youngest AZB partner is from the 2004 batch. Anand is from the 2007 batch.

He is a 2007 graduate. Which law firm have you heard promoting 2007 grads as partners in 6 years time, even if you are a rock star. Designations at Wadia don't matter in Big Law.

Trust Zia to know who to poach. In a manner unprecedented for WG, it's been robbed of its rainmaker in the making. Good luck to Anand and his team. I only hope that the 'many reasons' that it did not work out were enough for the higher ups in WG to let him go.

Well, Nihas Basheer who was recently promoted to partnership along with Anand Shah, is from 2007 batch as well. Well if one can really perform, what stops anyone from promoting - why stick to a rigid hierarchy ???

We are at a gen witnessing 2008 grads starting up their own firms.

You have to have some kind of sense of time and place. 7 years is just nt enuf for partnership. If you start a law firm, then you will obviously start as partner. But if you're part of a larger setup, even the brightest people need to be tested out for some more time.

What about others?
Are the senior associates from WG joining as associates on SA track?
Are the associates from WG joining as interns on Associate track?

WG will be finished if things go the way it is. 30 odd people have quit the firm in the year 2013. Worst years for wg. Nothing will change unless the big lime light greedy is asked to leave. Till that person is in the firm he will ensure everyone else quits and he is the last person standing for WG.

It's embarrassing for Wadia that a partner joins as non-partner in another firm. He's very young so this tells not so much on him but who Wadia bills/postures as partners via-a-vis other (mostly bigger) firms.

As long as Anand does not have an issue with his designation, I don't see why anyone

As long as Anand does not have an issue with his designation, I don't see why anyone here should. It's obviously a voluntary choice he's made to join AZB. What is significant about this move though is the growing dissatisfaction within WG. Senior Partner Djena Sunawala resigned last year, and now Anand with his team. Tough times ahead for a firm not used to attrition problems.

Kian, please do a piece on what are the most common reasons for people leaving the most-known firms like AMSS, AZB, Khaitan, JSA, Luthra, Wadia etc. It would be very interesting to understand the attrition rates across firms and reasons for it.

Good luck to Shah but one wonders whether he has done his homework well before jumping WG. Being a SA in AZB makes him just one of many lawyers and AZB has no team system so he will not have too much "independence" for long. Only one person from 2005 batch is partner and there are excellent front runners from 2005 and 2006 batch, let alone 2007 batch so it will not be easy for him to become partner very soon. Abhijit Joshi's statement is an ambigous promise and "partnership track" can be used to refer to anyone who is 2-5 years from partner and has no negatives. In the past also, there have been recruitment of "Asst. Partners" from Crawford Bailey who have joined as SA and stagnated. Quite possibly the same will happen to Shah also once the honeymoon period wears off.

I agree with Anish. Having been with AZB I can totally see this happening. That said I wish Shah and his team good luck!

Now the AZB partner race is hotting up! Interesting to see who will make the cut from the 2007 batch which boasts stalwarts like Ananya Sharma, Debashree Dutta and now Anand Shah. (all of whom are non-NLU products)

Just because you are from a "batch" does not mean that you are up for a partnership- It also has to do with your abilities as a lawyer, a business generator/ rainmaker and most of all... often ignored... your ability to effectively manage and lead a team...

Dear Kian,

Any idea on when AZB's partnership announcements for these three(Ananya Sharma, Debashree Dutta and Anand Sah) will be made? It should have been done by now so I'm surprised its not in the open.

It will also be a good showcase as to how lawyers from second-tier law schools make it to partnership in these prestigious firms despite the lack of branding. They are from Symby and GLC it seems.
