Wadia Ghandy partner Vijay Sureka joined AZB & Partners as a senior associate in Mumbai on 1 October.

Sureka, who has joined AZB Mumbai corporate partner Abhijit Joshi’s team, declined to comment when contacted by Legally India.

He graduated from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University in 2002 and was promoted to Wadia Ghandy partnership in 2011.

Wadia Ghandy partner Ashish Ahuja commented: “[He was] one of the most affable guys we had, who apart from being a colleague was a friend to a lot of people. We will all miss him.”

Last month Wadia Ghandy converted to the eat-what-you-kill partnership with Ahuja promoted to jointly hold the managing partner position alongside Dhawal Mehta.

Wadia is making partners too early which is leading to them leaving. One of the purposes of making a person partner is to ensure that he/she stays with the firm but Wadia seems to have turned that concept on its head. I think it started with Anand Shah leaving in December last year, then Gaurav and Amit and now Vijay. In all of this, if you make 8 new partners with some having only 5 or 6 years of experience, then you will have situations like this. I am not at all in favour of holding back partnership elevation, but there is an appropriate time for everything. Too soon and it can be disastrous.

Of course the flip side is that the argument might be that if they don't make these partners, they will leave as senior associates - which is worse. So you really can't win.

Basically a Senior Associate in Big 4 is paid more than a Partner in Tier II firm!!

Having known Vijay personally, he is a gem of a human being and an excellent lawyer.. I do hope that he will excel at AZB both on a personal as well on a professional level. Wish him all the best.

Because Wadia and Crawford does not pay well. They pays peanut to their Associates - Salary Partners. And if they will not revive their pay scale, no one will continue with them. Heard that they have not increased their salary since last three years...Kina, please confirm.

How much are freshers paid in Wadia & Crawford? Heard in CB starting is 25k but LI chart shows 10.2lac p.a. in some departments!!

Having known Vijay for years he is one of the best person at WG, both on work and personal front. I think till the time Senior Partners (specially one we all at WG know ... starts with D) dont't understand that filling their coffers is not enough they have to divide the share between the firm, WG will continue its downfall.

Forget about increase in associate pay, they have decreased their articles pay beyond what Tier 4 firms pay. They are preferring just cheap labour over talent. Recently WG downgraded itself from hiring from premier law colleges to hiring from [...] law schools such as RMNLU and Seedling Law School, Jaipur (have you even heard about this law school).

I too have heard that Wadia has shut it's Singapore operations. Operations is probably too big a word for its office there - it had only one person.

Mr. Vijay Sureka is one of the finest lawyers in Wadia and one of the best human beings i have come across. In spite of being a Partner at WG, everyone from the lowest rung to the upper most management were fond of him. We wish him the best. Good luck, Sir.
Also, this is a WAKE UP CALL to WG Management to try and understand the situation. Major Wake up Call.
Increase the remuneration! Because For sure there is NO lack of business coming in. The Work just keeps getting bigger and better, and with new clients on the brink every day- WG must look at their unmotivated Employees.
