Wadia Ghandy promotes 5 to partner pan-India (from NLS, NUJS, NLU-J, Symbi), +3 SAs

Wadia Ghandy promoted five senior associates across Mumbai, Delhi and Pune to partner.

In Mumbai: NLSIU 2008 alumnus Sameer Pandit, NUJS 2010 alumnus Krishna Moorthy and Pradeep Bakhru.

In Delhi: NLU Jodhpur 2009 alumnus Pranaya Goyal

In Pune: Symbiosis 2005 alumnus Akshay Gandhi

Bakhru and Goyal were promoted to senior associate in 2013, while Pandit and Moorthy were part of the April 2014 round of senior associate promotions.

Three lawyers were also promoted to senior associates at Wadia: Karan Dua and Richa Thakkar in Mumbai and Aman Gandhi in Delhi.

Great going! Finally selective promotions of good people by the firm instead of whole sale promotions. A lean partnership is the way to go. Also understand that this is genuine partnership with all partners actually signing the partnership deed.

I hear Sameer and Pradeep have been handling their own books for a while now. Well deserved partnerships. Also, have seen Sameer argue in the Bombay High Court on several occasions. Very impressive and fearlessly takes on top senior counsel while arguing.

What sort of money are we talking about here?

Is it fair to assume that a partner at Wadia makes around 40-50 lacs p.a.?

It's totally dependent on the partner's billing. Its a 2x model. You take home half of what you bill after the cost of your team's salary. So you can make much more than 40-50 lacs if you bill enough.

Not trying to take away from these guys, I'm sure they deserve what they've got... But one really needs to think about whether lawyers with cummulative experience between 6-8 years really deserve to be called partners... Especially at a time when Indian firms ought to be readying themselves for international competition.

8 years PQE in the UK means after a two year training contract (and a one year practitioner's course). Effectively, if you graduated from law school in 2010, you'd make partner in 2021, not 2016

But UK students graduate in 3 years and not necessarily in law. You have grads who have studied literature and green joining firms. The 3 extra years they spend doing the LPC and training contract is actually to learn law. So age and experience wise it's pretty much the same as India when they become partner.

http://www.legallyindia.com/law-firms/nls-2007-alum-aprajita-dhundia-makes-kirkland-partnership. She qualified in the UK in 2012 as per the article and made partner in 2016. That would be 4 years PQE. 8 years if you count from Sept 2007, which is the year of graduation.

Do a Google search if your really interested (for whatever reason) in knowing more names.

about 80 and the total lawyer count is at 85 - you didnt know? we ( read e as g ) have always wanted to have more partners than associates and we know all our associates are partners - we ( read e as g ) will soon enter the pepsi ( not limca ) book of records of being an all partner firm - you can wait and watch.
