10+ secretly signed into new (Shardul) Amarchand partnership deed today, after impending break-up announced internally for first time

Delhi (now) knows
Delhi (now) knows
knows”)

The Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi-region partnership, led by Shardul Shroff who is in the final stages of a separation with the half of the firm led by his brother Cyril from Mumbai since November 2014, on Tuesday for the first time announced internally that the firm was likely to split, subject to the outcome of the still ongoing mediation between the brothers that is set to conclude at the end of this month.

Unlike Cyril, who internally announced the impending split long ago and on 31 January called for volunteers to move to Delhi to kick off the new office there, Shardul is understood to have made no internal announcements relating to the matter until this week.

According to three independent sources, more than 10 of Shardul’s Delhi lawyers have been told they would become partners in the new firm, subject to the close of the mediation.

It is understood that earlier today each of them signed an agreement to accede to the a new partnership deed once the firms have separated.

However, while all of the new partners have been privately told of their elevation, none of the promotions have been announced within the firm yet, so Legally India was unable to confirm a complete list of names at the time of going to press.

We have reached out to Shardul for comment.

Alongside a pre-existing family office in Mumbai, Shardul is set to secure two office spaces in South Mumbai, including soon-to-be the former office of AZB & Partners in the city.

Meanwhile Cyril in Mumbai last week agreed to seven new equity partners and 12 new salaried partners, with two lateral partners already confirmed for his new firm’s Delhi office.

Both firms have already registered separate web domain names, with Shardul having bagged ShardulAmarchand.com and sssamarchand.com, while Amarchand Mumbai has registered CyrilAmarchand.com and five other domain names.

Update: Bar & Bench has reported that the following partners were made equity partners:

Bar & Bench has just reported that the following partners “are likely to be elevated to equity”, though this had not been confirmed by “senior partners”:

1. Dev Robinson 2. Naval Chopra 3. Prashant Gupta 4. Raghubir Menon 5. Ravindra Bandhkavi (Gurgaon office) 6. Shweta Shroff Chopra 7. Tejas Karia

These Partners would add to the league of existing equity partners i.e., Shardul Shroff, Pallavi Shroff, Gunjan Shah, Akila Aggarwal, Jatin Aneja, Kalpatru Tripathy, Ritu Bhalla, Amit Kumar and Ajoy Roy. According to sources, the firm is likely to promote the following principal associates to salaried partnership. 1. Abhishek Guha (Corporate) 2. Amit Singhania (Direct Tax) 3. Anuj Berry (Litigation) 4. Anoop Rawat (Project Finance) 5. Aparna Tuteja Mehra (Competition) 6. Harman Sandhu (Competition) 7. Misha (Litigation) 8. Monal Mukherjee (Capital Markets) 9. Nishant Joshi (Litigation) 10. Rudra Kumar Pandey (Corporate) 11. Saanjh Purohit (Litigation) 12. Saurav De Biswas (Corporate) 13. Sayantan Dutta (Capital Markets) 14. Vaibhav Kothari”

Oh my God! This is incredible news. Plenty of these guys are very deserving lawyers - if I'm reading the names right, certainly Berry, Harman, Saionton etc are great guys. They're definitely star PAs. Congratulations are due!

But are they too young/green to be partners? I worry so. Maybe there's been just the slightest bit of uhh, grade inflation? If I were them, would I be cautious about what lies in the future, how they'll be treated by contemporaries/ seniors/ the industry? Yes, I would.

Granted raghubir is a very good lawyer. But he has also been aided in his growth by SAM. He joins a very good bunch of corporate lawyers in the equity fold - gunjan, Akila, KT, bandhu etc.

Hear some good things bout the new bunch also from their peers Monal is doing well in the capital markets space, vaibhav and abhishek are highly rated in the m&a area, harman is a star in the competition team.

Good move from SAM though to elevate everyone to partnership, keeps the spirit high. They will need it.

Amit, abhishek, harman, anuj - good lawyers with a recognized market presence.

Sainton and Monal being good cap markets lawyer have a strong business case in their favour despite relative lack of experience

Don't know much about the others.

congratulations to all

The reason that these choices are universally accepted and unopposed amongst the AMSS Del (Sam) office is because they are truly deserving and non-controversial names and there can be no accusation of nepotism even in the family members who were promoted which is not the case with AMSS Mum (Can) office promotions.

No nepotism? Hahahaha.

For how many years has Raghubir (a STAR) been a salaried partner before being promoted to equity v. the family salaried partners who have been promoted to equity at the same time.

For people who are truly brilliant, why would you stay around at this firm, to only be treated on par with the sub-optimal and entitled?
Curious Kitten 29 Mar 2015, 19:42

The workings of this firm are and will always be for the 'family'! The family will not let go of the majority equity. Equity or salaried, partner or associate, no one else will be treated the same, which is a shame because in comparison some family are incompetent. Time these guys realised their mistakes of sticking on here.

Raghubir and Ravi B aside, the rest are a bunch of no-hopers. Everybody knows it.
What does being a good lawyer mean? Nothing if you can't get business for your firm! Not one of these are capable of pulling in REGULAR business other than the two mentioned above. This is just a knee-jerk reaction for which SAM will regret later. Silly is an understatement.

Kian, i have heard that most of the firms have declared bonuses for this year.

if you can do a story, it would be great.

and considering AMSS is spliting, please give us a seprate tally for them

Been thinking about this actually.

We've tried covering bonus in the past, but it's actually very hard to cover in any meaningful way, other than just writing, firm XYZ has announced a bonus.

We can get some anecdotal figures from a few people, but bonus will vary widely so getting something representative is tough.

We can get statements from the powers that be, but only rarely will they admit that the bonus pool is less big than before, etc.

We could ask for some mathematical data on bonuses, like mean and median percentage of annual salary, but not sure firms even have that.

What say?

Kian, high time you updated the Salary Table. It's been almost 3 years, now! I'm sure a lot has changed. I'm sure a lot of young people would be grateful to you for that. :)

You could collect data on how many firms actually pay bonus. there are various Tier II firms in Delhi that dont. The factors each firm considers when deciding to grant bonus and under what condition they would'nt pay at all.. Do Chambers, boutique law firms, litigation firms pay bonus? What is the scale?
etc. so there can be a meaningful and interesting study on this. Try.!

I don't know much about the equity partners but with the Salaried Partners it's a case of a lucky bunch of guys who may not have been promoted otherwise. The split has certainly been beneficial for the entire group of individuals who are 8 PQE+. If you haven't been promoted this time then it may be a great idea to look at other opportunities. 14 Years to equity is just such a long time!!

One thing is very clear now equity in two new successor firm of Amarchand will be only title for self satisfaction and they will take home more or less similar to salary partner. The days are gone when equity mean more money.

This must be unprecedented, how these brothers have sent seismic waves across the Law Firm landscape in India and to a significant extent, elsewhere too - internal appeasements, bonuses, elevations to partnerships, other random sops held out by all and sundry to keep their flock together, WoW!

To reproduce what I wrote in another post, this reminds me of a scene from the movie The Lion King, where the hyenas (rest of the lawyer gang) shudder at the very name of Mufasa (CAM/SAM): "Muffassa, Brrrrr!!.. Mufasa, Brrrrr!!!"..

I have no 'link' to them, am minding my own little SOHO, but Hats Off nonetheless!!
