9 months at JSA ‘warms’ cap markets consultant Madhurima Mukherjee to law firm life, becomes equity

Madhurima Mukherjee: Thought she was
Madhurima Mukherjee: Thought she was

Former AZB & Partners Delhi capital markets partner Madhurima Mukherjee Saha had joined J Sagar Associates (JSA) in June 2020 as an independent senior consultant.

Now, around nine months later, she has been offered and has accepted equity partnership at JSA, effective from 1 April.

Mukherjee said in a statement, that starts out perhaps more candidly than the typical press release: “When I quit last year, I thought I am done with law firms.

“But working as a consultant showed me how JSA follows international best practices, is equitable at every level and creates a very supportive work environment.

“The partners here have been exceedingly warm and welcoming. Bankers, our primary clients, only had words of praise for Arka and team.

“So, I was finding it more and more difficult to find reasons as to why I should not be doing this fulltime again. I am very excited to be formally part of JSA.

“We have identified and hired a highly skilled team, who will be supporting us out of Delhi and adding to the bench strength of Mumbai. I am confident that together we will provide the best legal support to our clients.”

In turn, JSA noted in its release: “We believe she will add value to JSA’s already strong market presence, with her years of experience and reputation. She will be based out of Delhi and will be consolidating the practice with Arka Mookerjee, our partner based out of Mumbai, for a nation-wide practice.”

The 1997 NLSIU Bangalore graduate had joined AZB Delhi in 2014 after having started and grown L&L Partners’ / Luthra & Luthra’s (erstwhile?) capital markets practice since 2006.

Before that she had been at what-was-then Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi as a partner in its capital markets team.

AZB Pune-based capital markets partner Richa Choudhary had joined Trilegal last month.

All in good time. Pandemic is a good excuse to delay things.

Kian, the caption beneath the photo is incomplete.

While she's warming up to the JSA system, wonder what will happen to the existing set up in Mumbai?

Believe a similar terminology was used for her AZB tenure as well. While at AZB, it was functioning almost as two separate firms, not sure what the JSA set up will be. She's a partner of some standing in the sector, so from a JSA perspective, even in a pandemic year, it's a fairly easy punt to take.

Execution will be a key challenge for her. Understand that most of her previous team is joining, so let's see if she lives up to her reputation without the AZB branding.

So the Delhi team is going with Madhurima. Half of the Bombay - Pune team is leaving with Richa.

So what's left of the AZB capital markets team and whats their plan? What about execution of the current AZB transactions? This seems like a set back not only to AZB but the clients who trusted them too.

The 2-3 juniors working directly with her in the Pune office are the likely candidates. Don't think anyone is leaving from the Bombay office. And if RC's departure is decimation in your opinion, you may want to check about the factual accuracy of your opinions.

My dear fellow AZB reporter - clearly you are the one who is in need to check your factual accuracy AND your opinions. Richa leaving is a huge huge dent on AZB’s practice (not saying that AZB won’t bounce back) and the fact that people want to move with her, only adds on to the kind of lawyer and leader she is. And from what I hear, Bombay people are moving too.

Don't think that 4 people are leaving with her. 2 associates working directly with RC maybe joining her. Position not clear.

You do know that AZB Bombay - Pune team is 7 people of which 4 people are leaving with her. If that is not decimation, I don’t know what is.
her leaving is a big setback for AZB. Anyone who thinks otherwise is in denial.

Right question to ask is:

Why everyone from Delhi and Pune are leaving? Why people don't want to work in AZB Cap Markets?
Guest 21 Mar 2021, 15:08

To be fair capital markets in general and corporate law as a whole (especially at junior levels) can be monotonous. This is especially true for bread and butter diligence work, the burden of which falls disproportionately on junior to mid level associates.

If you add a stressful team set up or unhelpful firm policies or a boss who isn't supportive, you're going to get mass resignations every now and then.
