After weeks of uncertainty, Luthra to welcome postponed 2020 batch by November (rather than 2021)

After having postponed the 2020 new recruits’ joining dates to 2021, L&L Partners has now promised to welcome all freshers by 12 November 2020 after the continuing and unresolved management turmoil at the firm had left hires on tenterhooks for weeks now.

In a Zoom call held last evening between managing partner Rajiv Luthra and nearly 50 joinees, Luthra assured the recruits that their hiring would be moved forward, after the firm had announced in September that their start date would not happen before 2021 (although a few had been ‘onboarded’ earlier).

Luthra confirmed the November 2020 date in a later email to the freshers, stating: “As mentioned, owing to the continuing pandemic, you will work from home, until you are informed of your physical reporting day at the office.

“I look forward to welcoming you in person soon, as well as, to us working together towards further enriching our institution.”

We have reached out to Luthra for comment earlier this evening but have had no response.

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas’ incoming batch of around 78 freshers recruited to start in 2020 remains scheduled to only begin in 2021, though some online onboarding programmes are in the works.

We'll appreciated move by Luthra ! Now CAM remains the ONLY firm to have NOT inducted all of its associates. Is the "world class teachnology" in works that CAM being the leading law firm cannot induct it's new joinees??
It's really funny and ironic when a firm with so many issues can and the one "Claiming" legal tech revolution can't
Makes you wonder the actual reason

You kids need to reign in that fake sense of entitlement. It takes more than just a Zoom call to onboard a set of know nothing FY associates. There is training involved at multiple levels. You should be happy that you got selected for CAM and not some firm where you are just another factor point in an otherwise giant pissing contest. Be patient. Pipe Down otherwise that offer may just be given to someone who actually appreciates it.

Obviously there is training involved but we would love to pass down some work load to joinees who were supposed to come. Think the main issue is why is it only CAM that hasn't inducted while all tier 1s have
Cammer 27 Oct 2020, 09:20

Thats the problem. You want all the money but dont want to do any of the work. Why do you want to pass down the work load that is yours to bear? Why dont you stop wasting endless hours on netflix and focus on your assignment instead. WFH is not a vacation.

Entitlement word should be declared as the most overused term. We have been asking our partners to get us some assistance in work. IDC who gets inducted. I would love a non-working weekend
Hogwash 27 Oct 2020, 10:38

What nonsense. With delayed joining and 1.5 years of rotations, these kids would be becoming A2's with barely 6 months of work-ex in any given practice area (not to mention having these short stints doesn't really help in developing any real sense of ownership about work, or towards clients).

This is opposed to places like TL where you'd have 2 years of work-ex, or even SAM where you'd have 1.5 work ex (with the added benefit of a rotation) by the time you become an A2.

For the sort of work done at law firms, experience is everything. Stop short-changing your juniors.
Ugh 27 Oct 2020, 11:24

Why do you think the firm will not remember this and not pay and designate them as A2. Most importantly, all other firms you mentioned will do as their kids joined on time.
Then what will these guys do ? Wait till they are never on par with their batchmates ?
Hogwash 27 Oct 2020, 13:58

The point is not that CAM won't pay an A2 level retainership to these kids when they reach that level (which is anyway lower than other tier-1 firms due to the Amarchand discount). The point is that these kids will be well behind their peers in other firms in terms of experience in a given practice area, at that time, which is objectively not good for them.
Ugh 27 Oct 2020, 15:20

Bud I'm on your side. I truly second you in the fact that these kids will be behind ( already are) if you want to compare with the brothers firm who inducted back in July

Totally Agree. These guys need to tone down their sense of entitlement. Its not like they are lifers anyways. They move the first chance they get an extra 100 bucks. Commitment and loyalty aint what it was.

God i miss the cold war!

Its not the legal revolution. Its a matter of how many deals we currently have. Truth be told, the firm hasn't been doing that well in GC and Lit. Rest I think, some kids were added to projects which is our main practice area.

Kudos for Luthra ! No matter what's happening, they have done good on their promise !
Now the only firm that remains is CAM which is ironically the leading and the most advanced law firm (obviously as per themselves only)
What has been stopping them from inducting ? Seems money crisis are really there for CAM and no other law firm

Lol. That is why it's also known as the property firm. Maybe they are saving up for lost rent or now it seems like these properties. An LI article did mention few weeks back that 1.5+cr was saved by not inducting new kids

The breakup of hires/interns is pretty generic across all big firms these days.

A few from Big 3 NLUs (Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyd)

Plus many from Mid 4 NLUs (Kolkata + Jodhpur + Bhopal + Gandhinagar)

Plus a few from Small 6 NLUs (Kochi + Raipur + Patiala + Lucknow + Cuttack + Lucknow)

Plus a few from Tiny Ten NLUs (Mumbai + Patna + Vishakapatnam + Gauhati + Ranchi + Trichy + Nagpur + Aurangabad + Shimla + Sonipat)

Plus a very small number from non-NLUs, often through contacts

The number of students from the 'Big 3' who apply for a firm job is the same as those from the 'Mid 4' though. Are you saying that the former just can't crack it as well as the latter, instead getting lost in the bigness of their selves?

NLU Delhi is largely ignored at the Firm that is at the centre of this report. That university started with a big bang but there were no takers as the job market has been quite saturated. Cant comment on how it is treated at other big firms.

I hope your quality of work and integrity is stronger than your fake NLU ego, demonstrated above. Because only the former gets you a job (in a firm, or ANYWHERE) for that matter. We have NALSAR kids who know nothing and Amity kids who do. I belong to neither but take a decent sum home. Drink that NLU ego down with your protein shake before you work out for 6 months and maybe things finally look up for you, kid.

It's a matter of respecting that talent. Working at a place is a two way door. You give respect and confidence to the firm so that you get some back as well.
All I'm saying my firm ( with a new office and pleasant weather) will respect them more by obviously kick starting their careers immediately

As a starting associate, the ONLY way you will get respect is through your work. If you think you can demand respect by just sitting on your whiney backend then you're wayy off the mark. Think again. Unemployment beckons those who harbour illusions of grandeur sans hardwork.

Not true. I am a millennial. I was born to demand respect. I have the right to a cushy job. I have the right to demand that i get paid the best and highest salary. I have the right to ask questions. I have the right to sit in client meetings. I have the right to whine and moan about every single policy that prevents me from enjoying life. If i had my way, we would all wear hoodies to work because thats what cool people do- thats what Marc ZBurg does. And if you dont give me whats rightfully mine, i will gather other like minded ones and spam the hell out of the LI comment section with whiney moany posts about how i am bieng treated unfairly. I dont care or respect anyone who may have every worked hard over the years to get to where they are because that position was always mine.

Oh! and i have absolutely no responsibility to anyone. Basically i am doing YOU a favour by joining you and you should kiss my feet. Otherwise i will whine and moan!
