Algo partner, TRA co-founder Jitender Tanikella joins AZB Mumbai as counsel

Algo Legal Delhi-based partner Jitender Tanikella has joined AZB & Partners in Mumbai as a counsel today, according to his Linked-in profile.

Correction 12:26: Tanikella is joining AZB Mumbai, not Delhi. Thanks to a commenter for pointing out the error, which is regretted.

The 2006 NLIU Bhopal grad had worked at Nishith Desai Associates and Luthra & Luthra, before co-founding TRA Law (now called Ikigai after his split with co-founder Anirudh Rastogi) after a Columbia Law School LLM in 2012.

The corporate, M&A and venture capital (VC) lawyer had joined Algo in 2019 when it had been started.

We have reached out to Tanikella and Algo for comment.

He is at least the fifth partner to have left Algo this year though the firm has also hired three, including the latest in Mumbai (still currently paywalled) that we have reported today:

lateral joiners: Namitha Mathews had joined as a Delhi disputes partner, and Ankit Guha in corporate.
departures: Siddharth Manchanda and Minhaz Lokhandwala had moved to IndusLaw, Vinayak Mishra had joined Lightspeed in-house, and Archan Chakraborty and Vijay Santosh to PwC.

Almost all of the initial partners (Vinayak, Siddharth, JT, [...], Minhaz) in Algo have left, not counting the SAs that have left since inception of Algo. Clearly something is going on in that Firm.

This seems highly doubtful. If partners from NDA, SAM are joining Algo, and as per your statement they are making less than an AZB counsel, it doesnt take a genius to figure out you have no idea what you're talking about. No idea how much ex TRA partners were making at Algo, but the recent crop of partners must be making a lot more or they wouldnt have joined.

As everybody knows, these partners were to go independent and do things on their own and under a promise that they can do it at Algo in the same way (which they will get to know in a few days’ time, is not the case), they came and it was not the money which made them join Algo, which it cant match. It would not be too late for them to realise that it would be neither independence nor money, and LI will have exit posts soon, which it has got habitual of publishing now when it comes to Allgo.

A promise of equity, or income projections, are likely why a Partner at Tier 1 would join a new firm. Doesn’t mean they will immediately start making more than they did in the previous stint. It is also unlikely that founders of a new Firm would promise large fixed fees - so equity is really what will likely be promised. If the Firm doesn’t recover, nothing. If it does, rainfall.

Even though I haven't met him in person, I absolutely love how he had a taste of everything, from an established firm, to being entrepreneur, to go back to roots and start afresh. Reminds me of Rudyard Kipling's "If".
