Ravi Kumar, one of three co-founding partners of Alliance Legal who decided to separate in December 2012, will join Amarchand Mangaldas in Mumbai on 5 April 2013 as a senior consultant.
The former Talwar Thakore Associates (TTA) managing associate confirmed to Legally India that he would join the firm but declined to comment further.
It is understood he will continue practising corporate M&A and private equity and will work directly with Amarchand Mumbai managing partner Cyril Shroff and partner Vandana Shroff. The contract was signed yesterday.
He graduated from NLSIU Bangalore in 2002, joined Amarchand in 2004 and left in 2007 as a senior associate for GE Capital as assistant vice president legal.
“We welcome him to the firm,” commented Amarchand Mumbai partner Vandana Shroff, adding: “It’s a home coming.”
After two years at TTA, he co-founded Alliance Legal with two other Mumbai lawyers in September 2011. Legally India reported just over a year later that the three had decided to go separate ways.
Fellow co-founder and former AZB & Partners partner Vishnu Jerome will start an office for Bangalore firm Poovayya & Co in Mumbai, while ex-J Sagar Associates (JSA) Priyanka Roy has joined IndusLaw in Mumbai.
In February 2012 former Juris Corp partner Vandana Sekhri had also joined Amarchand Mangaldas as senior consultant under Cyril Shroff.

The story here is that talented lawyers without connections are unlikely to make a go of a corporate practice.
