Amarchand Mumbai's campus recruitment tally hits 41 out of 52 this year with GNLU

Amarchand_mumbai_office

Amarchand Mangaldas’ Mumbai region offices have made 2011 job offers for 41 students, most recently picking up 12 each from GNLU Gandhinagar and Nalsar Hyderabad, nine from NUJS Kolkata and eight from NLSIU Bangalore.

Last year the firm had recruited the equivalent number of freshers from only three campuses more than a month later.

Amarchand’s Mumbai region, which for management purposes includes the Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad offices, was targeting a total 2011 recruitment figure of 50 to 52 students, explained Mumbai partner Vandana Shroff.

Last year the majority of Amarchand’s recruitment season had finished with a tally of 40 to 45 in September 2009, as reported by Legally India, after the firm hired nine finalists from NUJS Kolkata, with the rest having been recruited from Nalsar and NLSIU.

After visiting NLSIU Bangalore in May, the firm visited NUJS Kolkata two weeks ago and Nalsar and GNLU over the last week. Shroff said: “The quality at GNLU was super – it was a tough choice.”

She said that the firm picked up a majority of the top-ranked students from each college, except for a small number that wished to work abroad. “I can say with certainty that […] recruitment is at least 90 per cent of the toppers of each college,” she noted. “That’s a pretty strong percentage.”

GNLU campus recruitment committee convener and faculty member Ramesh Kumar said that their recruitment process for the batch of 2010-2011 started on 28 July and within two days students were selected by Amarchand, which was the first law firm to visit the campus.

Kumar said: “We are thrilled that 12 of our deserving students have offers from Amarchand Mangaldas. The credit goes to the GNLU alumni who are already working there and it’s because of their work [professional accomplishments] that we get recognition.”

In 2010’s final year batch only four students from GNLU received job offers from Amarchand, while a total of six were recruited in the 2009 batch.

The reason amss is taking more students from law schools such as gnlu is that students from the top three do not see amss as the be all and end all of recruitments anymore. This is so because packages are almost at par, and so is the growth potential in other leading firms. I doubt their claim of hiring 90% of the toppers, at least in the context of nls nalsar and nujs.

"I can say with certainty that […] recruitment is at least 90 per cent of the toppers of each college," she noted. "That’s a pretty strong percentage."

Interesting.

I can state with even more certainty that recruitments, at least at NUJS, have NOT been based on ranks and any implication that 90% of the toppers were made offers by AMSS is simply not true. Of course, this may have been true for the other schools that AMSS visited but in the case of NUJS, AMSS picked up a mixed bunch.

It's always good to see recruiters realize that ranks are not everything. But then, what is the need to make exaggerated and untrue claims such as the one made here?

I would like to reply to the above statement. Even today people go for amss as it is still one of the first priorities of law students in law schools in india. Offcourse unless some makes it through a foreign law firm, it is still the first choice. One more thing toppers can also mean toppers from the list of those students who had applied. By the way, there are many law schools in India whose batches are graduating, then one fails to understand why till now no student has been recruited by amss for next year apart from these law schools.

yeah...defining toppers to mean students in the top 10 at-least as regards nujs and nls i can say with certainty that the percentage is nowhere near 90%. :D
but congratulations to GNLU. atleast with them amss needn't worry about them not accepting the offers and hassle with undertakings et al.

(continued from #1)

None of that was to say that GNLU is not a good law school. I meant it more on the lines of - that the students' preference for other recruiters at some law schools is one of the primary reasons that AMSS now looks at law schools which it conventionally did not recruit heavily from. Needless to say, the students who get offers, irrespective of their law school, must obviously have deserved them.

A good start to recruitments this year. Congratulations to the students who have offers and to the respective recruitment committees!

@ 3

1. Is AMSS the top priority for all law students? In my opinion, no.

2. Toppers, as a concept and in the context of the quote, cannot mean top ranked applicants. What if the actual toppers (say, top 10 or 20 or 30 students) did not sit for the interviews? Would it be okay for a recruiter to hire students from ranks 30-40 and then claim that they hired 100% of the toppers?

3. Is there some sort of a stigma attached to NOT hiring toppers? Every year, tens of thousands of students appear for the entrances. Usually, the top 250 would go to NLS, NUJS, NALSAR. Someone who is ranked 40 or 50 or even lower, in my opinion, is a VERY worthy candidate. The fact that students with those ranks get offers from leading firms in the first place is a good indicator of that.

I concur with the above posts. It seems extremely odd that firms should feel the need to go around making such claims. If the claims are untrue as some others have observed, it is even odder!

I think GNLU is coming up like anything, with only 3rd batch going to be passed out; 12 students from GNLU & that too by AMSS shows the quality students tha college possess. Regarding the fact that AMSS is now not remained the first choice of students, i would disagree with the point as AMSS still remains the best!!!

GNLU has 160 students...the most for any law college...so the number of students recruited by a firm ought to be higher.

stats can be misleading...people should know the full picture.

GNLu had selected 40 students out of whom AMSS had to choose. The entire batch did not sit for placements. More than 40 students are not sitting for placements. This particular batch had only 145 students.

GNLU students were selected based upon their overall CV rather than just their CGPA.
A student who had a class rank of 42 was also selected.

Amarchand is the firm we all love to hate. They are Team Australia for law firms, if I may say :D

Kudos to GNLU. It's coming up really fast. I hope it churns out such results every year. I also think that the early recruitment has helped Amarchand grab a lot of talent really early.

You fools instead of fighting over which NLU is better thinks of it this way: 2013 onwards when all the foreign firms come in all the top 5-6 NLUs will have their bright students in these firms. AMSS will have to recruit from patiala, jabalpur etc.

Ten years from now NLSIU, NUJS, NALSAR and GNLU will be at par. America has a population less than one-tenth of ours but their top 10 colleges are of the same standard.

Its true that we dont have to fight but we have to appreciate the fact that being in only third year GNLU had defied its critics mainly those who were firm beleivers that BEGGARS CANT BE CHOOSERS!! GNLU had shown and particularly the current batch its not the college which makes students its the students who make colleges!!

@16: GNLU in top3? i don't think so. HNLU is widely acknowledged to be superior overall, just speak to any advocate or partner. AMSS has recruited from GNLU because AMSS has a good relationship with the gujarat govt and administration and because cyril shroff is on the GNLU board, but HNLU has better track record in academics, moots and placements. i do not think that AMSS will take many GNLU students next time.

I work in a an top tier (considered) law firm of the country and have had a couple of GNLU interns with whom I have interacted. I was particularly impressed with their work. They are really talented and hard working with a great attitude in general. So when cyril says that the quaility of students in GNLU was "super" I second that completely. For all those trying to undermine any other law school should realize that as we no longer are in any "one law firm" domination era similarly there is no one supreme law school. law schools like GNLU churn out a much better quaility than some of the other complacent counterparts. People who have worked with or interacted with GNLUites would second that I am sure :-)

I must say within 2 years from now GNLU would be in top 3 among all national law schools....

You people are just so lucky, at my college (RMLNLU Lucknow) let alone be placements, final year seniors have not even prepared brochure and PPTs for their placements but are still dreaming Amarchand & Luthra jobs just because they are in a NLU. I think placements has a lot to do with student quality rather than student activism. It is needful to select the best students to come together and run the show. Still, this news inspire me to do well when I am in "my final year". I feel so bad to be here after reading this piece and pity my condition. Why the hell do someone open an NLU when you cant get igniting minds to learn there. What should I do, it all makes me so scared for my future? Congrats GNLU anyways, I should not have left you. I seriously feel sorry for u dude!! I do agree NLU tag matters but GNLU and its students (with some support of the administration) have created a Brand Name for themselves... And they rightfully deserve it.

So things won't happen automatically, someone has to take an initiative and responsibility to constitute a well defined Recruitment affairs body which undertakes this function. I hope its not too late and your batch has a decent opening..

Optimistically considering @37's comment if u plan to specialize u can probably try masters in the top 3 law schools in the country.. Even they have good prospects.. Jst a suggestion..

Anyways All the best to RMNLU...

Comments should be rested by accepting this fact that nomatter whatever GNLU is...it may be poor in academics, poor in student quality and any damn thing which goes against in making any college an "elite university"....but does someone actually has to dictate terms to the law industry "maestro" who recruited this bunch of talent from this college, if thats so then nothing can be done. @political connection...hahahah can't stop laughing at it...CM of Gujarat is so lame and has no work that he'll go ahead and indulge himself in recruitment procedure. Considering HNLU, NLIU ...i would accept HNLU growing and has come up very well from what all difficulties they faced..regarding NLIU...its better to ask the alumini itself what they feel "now" about the college and placement scene there is not hidden (specially last year's.
Rest i could say is that...better to think of advancement and achievemnts of Legal Indurstry as a whole and not college achivement in isolation...both actually complement each other which they will continue doing the same.
Moreover, someone said AMSSS recruiting from Patiala and Jabalpur Univ. because of the entry of foreign law firms. Dear, it could be taken as a other way round that AMSSS don't want foreign law firms to come to India is symbol of "Patriotism" and why should the people of other countries shall mint our money, moreover as GNLU and other univ are growing similarly these university also have the potential to grow and who knows these univ of Patiala, Lucknow may grow some day to subsume other colleges!!!
Finally, Cheers to all who got selected :-)

I am a GNLUite and am proud to be one. This feeling finds home in all fellow GNLUites. Who doesn't faces the adversaries. But should we succumb to it? We didn't! My Director says that GNLU will give competition to Harvard Law School in the years to come by. Some may laugh at it. But we GNLUites do not. We believe in him and we work hard to make his dream come true. Spirit is always stronger than the body. And we at GNLU believe it, no matter whatever may come by.

Request.

Pls stop referring to anything here as a 'big fight' or a debate because its quite obvious that only GNLU students are posting here.

On a separate note, you would be highly misguided if you think dissenters suffer from the 'grapes are sour' disease. You guys need a reality check. With the top 14 students (top 14 implying overall performance), GNLU has too many average students left to place. Contrary to what GNLU students have posted here, anonymously signing off as lawyers, in none of my internships were GNLU students considered at par or given much work after their first assignments. The quality of a law school is determined not by the level of the well ranked handful of students, because those you will find everywhere even at amity. GNLU should really not get complacent and put in some serious work to pull up its 'average' student. We would all be glad to see GNLU rise. It isn't there yet and you crazy mindless kids will jinx it and ruin it for GNLU.

GNLU benefitted from most of NLU-J's toppers going to Luthra. The rest were interested only in the AMSS Delhi office which has not yet started campus recruitment. This is obviously a good thing because that way everyone gets a job. No firm has to rely on one or two law schools to hire people anymore. There are a good 7-8 law schools from which people can get hired now.

This is especially for #44....

Yes dude, we GNLU'ites are posting here, cos we love our alma mater like all those who belong to foundational batches of their own universities and we cant see people saying anything without knowing whole truth. We have struggled along with our University to become what we are. Right from forming the Recruitment Committee to this day, we have made sure that we leave no stone unturned to reach where we aspire to. We have excelled in moots, publications, conferences, MUN, Internships and now we will make it happen for Placements as well.

And also, its quite obvious that you are not from GNLU and secondly, you belong to those who claim themselves to be the "Big Daddy(s)" of National Law Schools in India. And just a suggestion, clear your facts before posting anything. Our 14 students have got offers, not "Top 14" (you don't have the rank list, I do) so refrain from referring us as "Bunch of Average students" cos we are 800 in number and if we all start posting here, clearly you guys will lose your lobby. And this is a beginning, just wait till we are done with our academic session, I'm sure we will prove you wrong on each and every front.

CLARIFICATION: Each law school has Good, Average and Bad students, but that does not define the whole bunch. So, its not only with us, just look at the students from "Elite Law Schools" without the goggles of their name tag, you will change your opinion.

Dude......(1)Check CLat 2010 score you will get the idea of preferences......which law school is preferred over what! (2)"Do not get fooled by big talk of GNLU students". Let people from your law school also get placed to AMSS upto 14 and then we will also not mind getting fooled by HNLU people but surely not before that you have any right to speak like that.Being a law student you should know the difference between the value of statement with an evidence and without an evidence. (3)"i have also heard" is first of all hearsay and secondly "they will not be allowed to........" ....dude they are professionals not the government..........wherever they'll get the quality they'll go just like AMSS. Pointless to say if you have the quality then AMSS will go to you as well or rather if you had the quality then AMSS would have visited you earlier (ask your placement cell whether elite firms are coming to your college or not for recruiting 2011 batch)5. And if it is only on the basis of "welcome" foreign firm starts recruiting then today let all the law schools be told this thing ......not only national but private and traditional as well....so they start welcoming because here we have a gentleman who says that foreign firms should recruit from their law school because they are 'welcoming' them.
Apart from wasting your energy over here you better should go and try contacting firms. Because we have 800 people and to your one query we three will reply. So go.........And please dont talk about moot results.....else i would be forced to adduce the statistics...........go..go.

@49: big deal. there are other cities which have law schools and IIM, NIFT, IIT etc. like bangalore and kolkata. how does that matter? do nlsiu and nujs students study at IIM or IIT? here are 10 reasons for not choosing GNLU:

1) opposed to foreign law firms. only wants swadeshi firms to recruit (hence the high figure from AMSS, but what will happen in 2012 when foreign firms come in?)
2) poor faculty (just go to websites and compare publications etc)
3) small campus many miles away from the city
4) poor disipline
5) ragging
6) no hep crowd
7) too much campus politics
8) throwing too much attitude at moots
9) library is not well stocked (said to me by GNLU students)
10) they have have big rivalry with NLIU an NLU-J. but its like comparing ODI player with ranji player

HI all of u...I am NO.27...remember the one who made a sane comment...Yes I am from GNLU...I have no strong reactions coz i like to wait n watch....I Hope our placements end well...However, I feel most people here are unnecessarily trying hard to prove that the 14 people who've got jobs have done coz of reasons other than their excellence....
@HNLU....u guys are reaaaly gud...wherever u go u prove ur self...but deep down in ur heart u know Raipur as a place sucks big time and the location of the University has a lot to do with the overall growth..we are lucky to be in the best state of the country n we are getting its benfits...
@all other law schools...most of u are brilliant and new ones are good too...lets all be sane n not try to pull the others down....
@fellow GNLUites....lets play the waiting game....no one expected 14 to b recruited from us...they are shocked.....let the season end...hopefully we would say that for a college that is just three yrs old we are doing pretty well
@at some people who pray foreign law firms everyday.....gud for u that they are coming....however a few of us have some cultural value left and think that the top class students should be a part of the Indian set up.....we respect ur opinion u shud respect ours...

@All who hate GNLU...pls stop trying to bring down our college...We as individuals attached to the institution are irked by such insensitive behaviour....i am sure evry college has something to hide...This news article is to celebrate the first real dash of success we have had, dun try taking it away coz it was not urs to give n is not urs to take

its good that we have a competitive spirit among all law schools, which is apparent here. GNLU is doing good now and the 160 strength, which has always been criticised, now showing positive side. GNLU alumni is performing well in various law firm as well as other sector of law. the allegation on GNLU does not even stand for a moment. WE are not saying that other law schools are not doing good, BUT the point is now we also emerging as one of the finest law school in India.

and honestly, we are not happy just 'coz GNLU is doing good, we are happy because if such quality students are coming out of these student then the whole picture of 'LAW'in eyes of common man would change.

The whole thing about GNLU being better than other law shcools should just stop. The fact is that Shroffs are Gujarati's and Amarchand has pure Gujju origins. Thats why CSS is on the GNLU board and SSS recently visited GNLU and AMSS has recruited 12 GNLU students - more out of a sense of duty towards their home state. Basically the quality is the same everywhere - GNLU, NLU, NLS, NALSAR, HNLU, NLIU - at least for the top ranked students.

NIRMA LAW SCHOOL!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA but its actually a serious thing to consider because its one institution which should not be considered in isolation. Since its a specie of Nirma group of institution whose Engineering, MBA's and other institution has almost 100% placement and since it will be their first batch passing out they will not leave any stone unturned to get the best placement. Moreover Nirma is one such school where bigiees of legal family prodigiees are studying so they can actually recruit people from law schools. So better not to consider that law school and focus ourselves on debate over AMSSS (GNLU) v. Other law schools :-)

#58 is spot on. It was pure Gujju loyalty that made the Shroff family recruit from GNLU. Wait and see what happens in 2012 when the foreign law firms come into India.

well, there have been lots of posts here... i am GNLU student... i have some significant clarifications to make -

1. it is undoubtedly true that the best students of the top three law schools (NLSIU, NALSAR, NUJS) have international law firms at their disposal... this single recruitment by amarchand does not make GNLU the top law school, and no one from GNLU claimed it is...

2. it is a misconception on the part of one anonymous guest here, who actually said that mr. cyril shroff is on the board of gnlu... he is not!

3. someone here claimed that HNLU is undoubtedly a college superior to GNLU... this is again a wrong notion... both are upcoming universities, facing similar problems, but with some very talented students, who have done their respective universities proud... GNLU stuents have credentials, at par withm, if not better than, HNLU, and many, in fact, most law aspirants prefer GNLU over HNLU...

4. whatever may have motivated amarchand to recruiit from GNLU, the fact remains that these students were recruited and got a dream job... the future remains bright for GNLU, even if it is because of some firms having gujarati orifgins having a sense of loyalty to GNLU (though most of the students recruited were neither gujaratis nor gujarat-domicile)...

I am from one of the big 3 NLUs and am currently with a foreign firm. I would rate GNLU ahead of NLIU, NLU-J and of course HNLU for a variety of reasons. But all the NLUs will do well if liberalisation happens. There are bright days ahead for all if SILF loses the war.

You are a student of GNLU. A student from NLSIU, Nalsar or NUJS would have mentioned the name of his law school and employer instead of saying "Big 3" and "Foreign firm".

I am a GNLU student and I am really happy that AMSS recruited 12 of my batchmates and not because Shroff's are Gujju's or something but because actually those people were the one's who actually deserved it as they worked hard constantly for five years, but there is still long way to go. When I joined this university there were some problems but I think the new VC has done a commendable job in a short span of time. And I would not like to say that GNLU is the best NLU in the country because there are still others which are better ( one of the key factor is because they got a good head start; but still the fact remains that there students also worked hard for it), but yes GNLU has potential to challenge them in coming few years and we are on right track to achieve that. All we need to remember is that it is a big achievement but one such recruitment does not make us best in the business but it should only inspire us to reach further heights. And yes I have few close friends in HNLU also and they are also very good in academics and above all they are awesome to hang out with :-)
P.S.- [I don't like hte current moot court committee convenor]

Hi. This is for all those who are laughing at NIRMA Law School. Its a Law School with difference that will be realised when its first batch will come out in 2012. NLUs dont have monopoly on quality legal education. The statement will be realised in a year to come. Till that wait and watch and keep mouth shut.

Liked a previous comment made in Li Blawgs under the weblink (http://www.legallyindia.com/1144-gnlu-is-definitely-better-than-nlsiu-nalsar-and-nujs-all-put-together) and replicating the same:

"Dear All,

I am a passout of the captioned college (GNLU) and the only thing I would like to state is that your destiny is mostly in your hands (except if there is something like recession, health problems, etc.) and if you do not work hard to get it, no NLU rubber stamp is going to help you. All the NLUs offer almost similar exposures and give an opportunity to spread wings through moot courts (helps develop research and oratory skills), publications, internships, etc. So, it is entirely upon you as to how you would like to use the opportunities. So, just work hard in law school (but don't get exhausted and keep taking chill pills in between), have good relations with fellow students and faculty and do not ignore your CGPA (as the same affects your recruitment prospects).

With Best Regards..........."

I would just like to made a clarification to my earlier post (#64), I was talking about the "student convener" of Moot court committee and not the faculty convener. I apologize for the typographincal error. Girish sir is one of the best faculties who have ever taught me.

Okay this is for the idiots who said the Shroff's were Gujjus and thats why they went for GNLU...Vandana Shroff is a madu, but its not like they went with blazing guns to nlu-j...and no I'm not from GNLU, rather NUJS! As far as the 'apparent' fight between HNLU and GNLU is concerned, both are newer law schools, and would probably face the same problems...and for the GNLU geniuses who said that their college is better than NLU-J and bhopal, good for you guys! 14 placements at AMSS and you guys start behaving as if you're superior beings! Wow! I'm sure its some dumb first year who couldn't get a good CLAT rank and has now made it his life's ambition to make sure he tries to convince everyone that his college is better than theirs! Best of luck with that!
