Amarchand Shroff daughter weds Adani son in high-powered ceremony

The daughter of Amarchand Mangaldas Mumbai managing partner Cyril Shroff, Paridhi Shroff, has married Karan Adani, the son of prominent Gujarat industrialist Gautam Adani, founder of the Adani Group.

The Economic Times featured a 31-photo-slideshow of the 11-13 February Goa wedding, reporting the attendance of Reliance industrialists Anil and Mukesh Ambani and their mother Kokilaben Ambani; Vedanta group’s founder and executive chairman Anil Agarwal; Kotak Mahindra Bank promoter; vice-chairman and managing director Uday Kotak, Essar Group vice-chairman Shashi Ruia; Kingfisher group founder Vijay Mallya; ICICI bank non-executive chairman KV Kamath; Enam financial chairman Vallabh Bansali; Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra.

The Telegraph India speculated that the presence of so many industrialists at the wedding was reportedly the cause for the postponement of Mamata Bannerjee’s Mumbai roadshow.

The Times of India also reported that BJP leader LK Advani, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, “senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad, Morari Bapu, Parimal Nathwani, Keshubhai Patel, Sudhir Nanavati, Girish Dani, Jaxay Shah and Kartikeya Sarabhai” were present, while Daily Bhaskar featured more than 30 wedding photos.

A large number of partners from international law firms are understood to have attended the ceremony.

The Ahmedabad-headquartered Adani conglomerate is a long-standing client of Amarchand, with the firm having advised on Adani Power’s record initial public offering (IPO) in 2009. In early 2012 Amarchand had also set up an office in Ahmedabad.

The MD of Adani enterprises was arrested by the CBI once, but I suppose such things hardly matter in a country where the Ambanis are worshipped as gods.

To answer your question, LI is a reporting forum for keeping a lawyer updated on the developments in the legal front. I am sure none of us are too bothered about what marries what....and who marries who....just saying.

Maybe a movement of a partner or a latest legal update would have interested an individual but to give an update on somebody's personal life....gimme a break. If this is the level of reporting that one expects out of LI, they might as well name the site Legally Shroffs or Legally Khaitan for that matter.........LI as i perceived it to be was a front to keep us aware of the legal pulse but unfortunately LI has reduced itself to nothing more than a mere page 3 website.....may i dare say......unfortunately the Anon failed to understand the real message that was being sent

I disagree... if it were to be only about Paridhi Shroff's social life and marriage, it would not be news... but it certainly is not... this is a marriage that gives us an insight into the workings of India's law firm... and therefore, to my mind is legal news... after all LI does not just report judgements, it reports legal news... and how the Shroffs use their societal position (and family ties) to keep where Amarchand is today ... is of real interest to an observer of Indian law firms...

Is that the key to success of....... and AMSS......So basically the working of a law firm such as Amss is all about the business tie ups.....starting from Shardul/Pallavi tie up etc etc etc... and therefore the key to achieving societal position such as the Shroffs is only through and all about family ties between business groups?

More importantly what i fail to understand how does a marriage give an observer of an indian law firm the so called insight into the working of a law firm? Please do pardon my ignorance but i think these are to trivial a matter to be reported...... unless LI is a forum for the Shroffs to propagate and advertise themselves.

To #5: The negative comments are wholly justified. This is a firm that does zero pro bono work while splurging money on a wedding , keeps foreign competition out while encouraging nepotism. It is a sad comment on our country that this firm is the most well-known law firm and the likes of Clifford Chance and Allen & Overy are not allowed to operate.

It would be simplistic to state that it is the only reason for AMSS' success... but if you deny that it is not one of the contributing factors in their continued dominance, then you are living in a fool's paradise.. . it shows how market dominance is created and maintained (think the Shroffs, Zia, the Khaitans, the Desais,)... and why it is so difficult for first generation lawyers to set up successful commercial practices ... It would be stupid to say that there should be no debate on these issues or that someone should not report this...In fact as an insight into the way Indian corporate firms works this is much more important than X partner moving to Y firm (its one of the reasons why X partner's departure has a limited effect on AMSS). If you remember the Forbes article a few years back it went into some depth into the culture of the Firm, and this is another reflection of that.

If you don't like the news, don't read it.

It is true that this country works on connections but it would be in bad toste to presume that this union is a purely commercial one.

To Whatay - there are actually firms that have created first generation commercial practices that are successful and competitive - some examples are S&R and Trilegal. It is hard though given the enormous clout of the entrenched powers that be!
whatay 19 Feb 2013, 07:48

@ Nutri Nugget- of course, the union is not a commercial one (...) but it is legal news simply because a collateral fall-out in the strengthening of a firm's market position.
And of course Trilegal and S&R has succeeded (but they are the exception rather than the rule). My comment is equally applicable to first generation lawyers within Biglaw- they simply do not have the social connections

One read of these comments makes it clear that the indian bar is obsessed with the shroffs who are like the ambanis of the legal world . They criticise them but cannot think beyond them and never will. . In its own ironic way the shroffs have nothing to worry. They will always be the closest thing to legal royalty in India s legal market . Ignore them if you don't like them. There is nothing like bad publicity. They must be chuckling with all the attention even if it has a mean shallow streak to it. Hail royalty . It reminds me of England's obsession with royal family . Love them. Hate them but cannot live without them. Nor find something better. . Nothing comes even close to their influence . Think about it friends.

SO true. If some lawyers are worshiped by thousands of lawyers and considered King (God forbid) in the Kingdom of Indian Law and if some lawyer kids would like to be as BIG as THE SHROFFS or maybe Bigger than them, then, I can surely see the future of Indian Lawyers as a bunch of CLEVER BUSINESSMEN hidden under the UNIFORM OF LAWYERS. Additionally, I am sorry to say, this news is not an intelligent piece worth of being published from the Editorial team of Legally India. But, if you were paid to publish it, then, I waive my right to criticize it.

Unless it says sponsored post above an article, then, to the best of our ability, we published an article because we exercised our independent editorial judgment to do so, and nothing else.

If nothing else, the debate this story has generated should be vindication of our judgment in this case, even without the fact that the Economic Times and other mainstream non-law publications deemed it interesting enough for publication...?

Businessmen or lawyers or both, at least they have sustained their law firm for a really long time at the top. Better than the tiny firms who sell out at they first opportunity to break up in no time. I would rather entrust the future of indian corporate law to the shroffs than some foreigner or. Some non descript indian nobody who has no past track record nor credibility for the future, . The shroffs are exactly like the Gandhi family to the congress. Take them out of the equation and nothing will remain. They alone can keep it all together. Who will trust the likes. Of the next batch of partners like [...] or [...] or [...] etc with the future of the firm ? They are good lawyers but no credentials to lead . Any story however trivial of the shroff family will always generate interest . Why else would this blog carry it. Kian is no fool . Personal stories should however be tempered with the family's right to privacy . Does anyone give a damn if the managing partner of a smaller firm had a marriage in the family. It's obvious no who creates the most interest. Even Zia who has three girls to marry will not .

Dear Jhansi Rani,

Will you entrust the future of Indian law to the next generation of Mumbai Shroffs?
kianganz 19 Feb 2013, 12:26

Some more food for thought, for those who are still hungry. The Shroffs have publicly and internally often talked of the 'bicycle model' of managing a firm: family as one proverbial wheel, and non-family partners as the other wheel.

It is an interesting model for an interesting time in the Indian legal market; how well this model works will determine at least a few things about the future of the firm, and also possibly a few things about the future of the Indian legal market.

As such, tactful reporting on some family matters, bearing in mind a right to privacy, makes this a legitimate and relevant story, I believe.

Best wishes,
Kian
