Ganguli joined last week and said that he would be focusing on his personal interests of commercial litigation and commercial arbitration, although he would be doing everything as part of a full-service law firm.

“[Argus] were getting litigation matters and because they didn’t have a litigation team they were not able to service these clients, they decided to start litigation,” he added.

“There is definitely a fairly large market for litigation and it’s a matter of reaching out to your clients and giving them the comfort level.”

Ganguli graduated from Symbiosis Law School Pune in 2003 and started his career at the Calcutta High Court after obtaining an LLM degree from the University of Bristol.

Amarchand Kolkata head Niloy Pyne is understood to continue heading up the litigation team of several litigation senior associates, which would be replenished, according to a firm source. Amarchand partners declined to comment when contacted.

Argus was started in by former Amarchand Mangaldas’ Kolkata partner and head Dutt in September 2009, together with Ramya Hariharan, and in October 2010 opened an office in Mumbai.
