AZB Mumbai promotes 5 to partner in 3rd round this year after revolving door of senior exits & hires

3 of the new partners: Shah, Desai, Sharma (l. to r.)
3 of the new partners: Shah, Desai, Sharma (l. to r.)

AZB & Partners has promoted five of its lawyers to partner level, reported Bar & Bench.

The new partners, effective from 1 October, are:

Ananya Sharma

Sharma had joined AZB in 2008 from ICICI Bank.

Ratnadeep Roychowdhury

Roychowdhury had joined AZB in 2011 from Amarchand where he began his career in 2007.

Nilang Desai

Desai had joined AZB in 2013 from White & Case in London, where he had spent nearly three years after a total of four years in French firm Gide Loyrette Nouel and Linklaters, after graduating from King’s College London in 2005.

Lionel D Almeida

Almeida is a 2007 graduate from the University of Mumbai who had begun his career at Crawford Bayley as an articled clerk in 2005, joining AZB in 2007.

Anand Shah

Shah had joined AZB as a senior associate in 2013 from Wadia Ghandy with his team, where he was a partner.

Tumultuous 12 months

In June of 2015 the AZB Mumbai region had already promoted senior associates Nanditha Gopal in Bangalore and Percis Anklesaria in Pune, while in March 2015 the firm had promoted two in Mumbai and eight in Delhi.

AZB partners Kalpana Merchant and Shuva Mandal have left in the last month, while partner Essaji Vahanvati went on an indefinite sabbatical in January 2015, following the loss of senior partner Abhijit Joshi and partner Nandish Vyas in late 2014.

However, the firm has also hired former Facebook counsel Chetan Nagendra in Bangalore this year, and in Mumbai a compliance team from EY headed by Ajay Upadhyay, and the former legal head of Suzlon Energy, Naved Askari.

In 2014 Rishi Gautam had joined as a partner from Clifford Chance and Amazon, and Prashanth Sabeshan from Majmudar & Partners in Bangalore.

Simple question - whether AZB is in hurry for making second line after exit of Abhi, Essa, Shuva, Vinitha... Shah is justifiable [...] Harsh and Shashank Jain are still PA and SA respectively. Good for Lionel but what about others...

And you think Kian this comment shouldn't be moderated when someone is taking an uncalled for attack (and a lie) on a particular individual when it comes to transformation?

inexperienced lawyers being given the "partner" label. these are SAs being called partners. Anand has a decent book from WGCO. sharma ji - just about ok book. the rest are service lawyers and not partners. good individuals. azb does not promote the business in lawyers, it is aimed at servicing zia. zia looks at these as an opportunity to increase billing rates. The game starts and ends there for her.

You should really get your facts right before offering your opinion. Or do you work in an organisation which doesn't require that?

some steps to stop further poaching. the situation is serious within the firm. birdies says that zia is working hard to be soft, for the moment at least.

this seems more like a desperate attempt to hold on when one knows they are in for a heavy fall... There was a time when being a partner at AZB meant something.. I guess with this promotion line up it is evident that she has chosen to pay the number game and promote anyone within sight!

Get ready for another round of exits from AZB of those people who were widely expected to be promoted to partnership but are strangely missing from the list.

@Sad...you need to consult @Nostradamus

It sounds as if some people were hiding under their desks when the partnership offers were being scattered about to anyone within sight....

Ananya: Clearly accompanied by some sort of a reputation but, from what I've heard, has worked really hard to get where she has
Anand: Great guy, with tons of respect within the firm and externally
Lionel: Very similar to Anand, and who, from what I've seen, has done a lot to take AZB's CM practice to where it is today
Nilang: Not heard too much, but I hear he is a great person to work for
Ratnadeep: I heard was a star at AMSS and continues to be one at AZB As well..

Seems like good promotions to me, and definitely as deserving as similar promotions at other firms.

Kian do your moderation better. How is it when people are making false aspersions on reputation of people, it goes unchecked??
kianganz 28 Sept 2015, 04:29

It seems like a pretty positive comment overall, rather than casting aspersions?

"accompanied by some sort of a reputation" that's a positive comment? You think anyone would say that to the subject's face? By your own admission, if you cannot say it in front of the person, it better not be published. All this rumour mongering on reputational capital is uncalled for.
kianganz 28 Sept 2015, 19:06

I really have no idea in this case whether it's positive or negative. A reputation can be all sorts, good or bad or neutral, and frankly I find all these comments a little bizarre.

If someone wants to actually explain what all these veiled references are about, please leave a comment here and mark it not-for-publication and we can take a call on moderation?

Apologies, didn't mean to create any controversy with that statement - I was merely referring to the previous comments.. As far as I'm concerned it is well deserved.

Wow! Seems you know all of them and their reputations quite intimately! No wonder you are busy writing reviews on them while they are busy becoming Partners! Now that is an overall positive comment! Please do not moderate.

I'm not clear on what your issue is here - does every comment have to be a negative one? I've worked with each of them and was just voicing my opinion - or is that not allowed?

Good show by young lawyers. Senior lawyers in the firm need to start wondering how many of these will stay beyond 3 years ? After the honeymoon - there are some strong forces in the firm driven by the only power Centre that will push these young lawyers to change course and their mind. Why would Abhijit and Essaji and Shuva leave after a decade plus run unless driven to do so by the whims of the power Centre.

Why are you selectively pulling back comments after they have been published? And I'm not talking about the ones which have been moderated. Shouldn't you be impartial and unbiased?
kianganz 30 Sept 2015, 08:31

Not so selective - use the 'report' function next to a comment and if you make a good argument for why a comment should be moderated or unpublished, we'll do it...
