AZB Mumbai widens management with new CEO role for Abhijit Joshi

Joshi: Unlike many lawyers, he enjoys law firm management
Joshi: Unlike many lawyers, he enjoys law firm management
Exclusive: AZB & Partners has appointed senior partner Abhijit Joshi into the newly created chief executive officer (CEO) role, overseeing the Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune offices while continuing in his client-facing duties.

Corporate and M&A lawyer Joshi (pictured) would continue his fee-earning work in Mumbai but as CEO would also be tasked with “steering the Firm to the next level of growth”, according to a statement from AZB.

AZB’s Mumbai-based managing and co-founding partner Zia Mody added that it was an important step in the continued institutionalisation of the firm. Mumbai co-founding partner Bahram Vakil also noted that it was a defining step on the way to achieving the next frontier.

The appointment was proposed by the firm’s management and approved by a partnership vote.

The ambit of the CEO role for the Western region – the firm’s Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune officers - is understood to include managing sustainable future expansion of the firm, devising plans for dealing with competitive pressures in the market and managing talent.

Joshi told Legally India that he looked forward to the role and the future with a lot of excitement.

In 2000 Joshi had joined as the first non-founder partner at the Chambers of Zia Mody, as the Mumbai firm was then called before it merged with Vakil in Mumbai in 2002 and later with Ajay Bahl in Delhi to create AZB.

Joshi was previously a partner at Dua Associates, which he joined in the late 90s from Amarchand Mangaldas. He is qualified as a solicitor of the Bombay Incorporated Law Society and a solicitor of England & Wales.

Its heartening to know that law firm management concept is getting attention in India. However, the concept was there in the west much before. The newly elected IMF chief was once the chairman of Baker & McKenzie, Chicago in 1999.

[...] As an associate in the firm, I think the designation other than it's nomenclature has no real significance. It will continue to be personality driven by it's named partner.

Why dont AZB offices ever hire on basis of cv?
I know why you are Jobless 4 Jul 2011, 04:23

Cause any half decent firm will only give that much weight-age to the CV. The CV is only the first impression, the interview is where you need to crack it.

really? looks like all these so called 'half decent firms' must exist in India alone... rest of the global firms, well hire on the CV and the interview is basically to confirm whats written in the CV and is therefore an elimination round

Well it's nothing but a designation happy appointment. It sounds nice. But let's face it, for all purposes, the vision of the firm, strategy and management will be driven by Zia. The new CEO role won't make a difference. Zia will continue to call all the shots and rightly so.

They should have hired external managerial personnel for the CEO position. A lawyer doesn't have the managerial expertise to run an organisation other than providing legal solutions to clients. Nothing new will come out of this new role. It's another one of those soundbites.

@Insider- "why rightly so"?

@Anon- because she effectively owns and controls the firm.

This is probably just a retention gimmick. All AZB partners (other than one or two) basically see themselves as employees and not owners.

But that I think would be true for most other large firms (i.e. amarchand, luthras, khaitan)

Believe that is true for most firms and surprisingly, especially for Trilegal (between the founding partners and the rest of the firm).

@Old and Wise - you're right it's a retention gimmick and the current CEO played well into it. Kudos to the managing partner for such a brilliant retention strategy. Ownership and management will still remain with her.

Looks like top corporate lawyers { including Z ( & silent B)} of AZB have got the concept wrong. The Indian version of this trend (having a dedicated business manager) started with AMSS appointmenting of Valerie Bowles as its COO in late 2009. Not to forget, AMSS is a registered company, Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co. It will be appropriate for them, as a company, to have a officer to oversee daily operations. This step up does not fit in a partnership. What does an executive officer do in a firm spaerheaded by a managing partner. This leads to a rather stupid question, who will manage the affiars; Managing Partner or CEO?. If it is true (as we know it will never be)that CEO will be tasked with operations of Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune (Pune - what happens to Yogesh?!?), then AZB guys can expect CEO to check their in-out timings, time slips and controlling all other activities - and making sure that everyone is occupied with tons of work, required or not, untill they achieve annual targets for client billing. But then does this mean that Zia will henceforth stop doing all of these, which she religiously carried out for years burning the midnight oil - even early morning oil! And the most important of all - who retains the infamous BEEP? Also, will CEO take a cut, other than x% as equity profit share, for new responsiblities. If the partnerships at Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore are separate partnerships (due to cap of 20 partners), then how is that one CEO does it for three partnerships? And in that case why is it not firmwide, meaning Delhi leftout?

Dude, get you law right before commenting. Merely having Co in the end does not make AMSS a company!! In any case, companies in India cannot practice law!!
AMSS is a Co??? 7 Jul 2011, 12:07

AMSS is not a company. Just because it has a "co." in its name?? Go read your Company Law / Partnership Laws!!

Dude, you paint such a perfect picture of how things are at AZB that reading your comment I almost felt like I was back there. And yes, I agree with your (and everyone else's) skepticism on how effective this whole CEO thing will be. We all know that [...] calls the shots and no one else.

AZB raises certain interesting questions. I feel that instead of criticizing this move, we should be optimistic. IMHO, Zia will delegate most of the admin, HR and other daily responsibilities to the CEO. This will leave her with ample time to deal with clients, restructure the partnership and the fee-earners (there has been a lot of attrition lately!). As for Delhi being out of the CEO's ambit, the Delhi office is managed very competently by Ajay Bahl and has an existing CEO in Raman Sharma. As with all law firms, Delhi and Mumbai are slightly divergent.

@16 - AMSS is a registered company? That cannot be - a company cannot practice law. By adding "& co" to your name, it does not make you a registered company. If AMSS is a company, how come it has partners in its ranks then?

You're right, Amarchand is a set of interlocking partnerships, NOT a company!! :)

This is completely out of context and uncalled for, Aporna! For your information, AZB & Partners recruits on the basis of CVs received and as per multiple rounds of interviews conducted. Please email CVs to OR (depending on which location you would like to opt for).
