Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas has promoted six of its fee-earners to director level in a round of 120 associate promotions (though 23 of those are promotions into various associate ‘designate’ ranks, which are mostly in use at the Amarchand legacy firms).

According to its press release this was “one of the largest promotions ever” (though since Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas has grown to 750 lawyers, that’s perhaps a given.

The new directors are:

  • Aditya Prasad
  • Anandita Kaushik
  • Emil Joseph
  • Jeeta Nayak
  • Juvraj Singh
  • Navin Kumar

As also in the recently announced 23 partner promotions, corporate was the largest department.

And in the associate promotions too, Mumbai was the largest office, closely followed by Delhi and Bangalore (see below).

Two days ago a conversation topic by a reader on Legally India had asked about the promotions.

While the rest of India is reeling under the effects of COVID 19, CAM is busy pleasing its employees with fancy designations. Next up, Assistant Director or maybe Additional Director or Director in crime...

One whose sycophancy skills need polishing and who has to still "direct" his energies into pandering to big boss ego to become part of "partner" club

Someone who's worthy and deserving of partnership, but big boss says no or not yet.So we give him a designate title, won't it be insulting to call them partner designate?HR says Director,Big Boss says done.

It's a polite way of saying you are not going to make partner here.Thats why no Partner Designate title because there should remain no illusion of being on the partner path.So the "Director" title in typical jhumla style.

What is the significance of the 'Consultant' designation given to lateral hires at quite a few tier 1 firms including CAM? I've seen they are subsequently converted into PA or SA anyway. Where does a consultant stand in the hierarchy between Associates, SAs and PAs? And is there any difference in the job profile of a consultant and an Associate or a SA or a PA? Thanks!

There is one more to the inventive list of designations - Principal Associate Partner Designate - or PAPAD..

Consultant typically is a position offered in order to assess whether the person who is joining with x years of experience, deserves to be there or not.

This is more of an assessment designation and totally justified.

Both the Amarchands deserve respect. The first breakthrough was the designate title. PA designate, SA designate, Partner designate, gardener designate etc. Now comes another watershed move in law firm management....the Director position. Designate is a fancy title that is given to an associate who they don't want to promote to SA/PA but need time to create a back up in case they leave.Next year that poor soul will not be in any position to negotiate for their promotion.

Many congratulations to all the SADs, SA, PADs, PAs, PDs, Ds, Ps etc etc. I don't know of any professional services organisation of this size where there are so many designations...clearly, lawyers are hard to please and require so much of these fake decorative titles to motivate them them to slave!

Such a shame!!! None of you is bother to congratulate (except no. 7). All you know is why this and not that. Feel happy that someone has achieved something instead of demeaning them and the Firm. Spread happiness, world need it the most. Especially at these times.

Kian, is there any reason why LI has stopped publishing the names of the promotees? I note that in press releases before 2020, it was the norm to also mention the names of the promotees to SA/PA/Counsel etc., designations.

Is the change due to any specific change in the policy of LI in covering promotions (such as to restrict this to Partners and such), or due to LI not having access to the list of names (which would be surprising, as surely some or the other insider would be sharing this).

WTF 12 May 2021, 09:54

Really !!! Would appreciate little bit of respect for corporate law especially when you write notes or reams on role of directors on corporate governance matter. 'Director' as designation if you can't make a partner - what a joke in the name of alternate career path. It will be so misleading for the clients. Just call them counsel or of counsel like other firms. Or just borrow from I banks and designate them as AVP, VP or SVP, for all you like.

U walked into this choosing to shut ur eyes then you got no one to blame but yourselves. When u have 1 man or 1 family controlling and making the final decisions vis-a-vis a management of professionals who earned their way to the top, then don't crib about unfair decisions. The expectation isn't legit. You don't like the "Director" position, leave.

Personally I would never work at such a place but when someone works hard through a pandemic, doesn't get promoted, gets saddled with a stupid Director title and so then told if you are not happy you can leave thats just arrogant and horrid.

Then leave.. someone else will come in your place. You may not have been promoted for just this kind of mindset. Promotions are EARNED as a consequence of merit. Not expected as a matter of right or reward.

There's that stinky arrogance of lala shops .Leave - ya,because to us lawyers are easily replaceable and disposable.Say what? You deserve the promotion? That we decide whether you have earned it or not.Our mindset only values nepotism and sycophantic qualities but we will make you believe you are not worthy enough.Just as token of saving face we will give a fancy Director title also,so don't crib.Right?
