Cyril Amarchand to open representative office in Singapore (despite recent lack of action from rivals)

CAM opens up a shop in Singapore (screenshot of CAM video announcement)

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) is expected to become the latest Indian law firm to set foot in Singapore from 12 February 2021 with a representative office in Singapore, which in recent years had fallen out of favour with firms in terms of having boots on the ground.

The announcement is scheduled to be made on 12 February 2021, on the auspicious day of the Chinese New Year (which will begin the Year of the Ox), according to an apparently early leak of a video from the firm.

We have reached out to CAM for comment and will update this story when we hear from them.

While we have not been able to authoritatively confirm any more information as of now, such as whether there will be any full-time partners or lawyers based there and who, if anyone, will be heading it up, a brief (presumably leaked) video of the firm announcing the launch has been making the rounds, and it very much appears authentic.

Check it out in full here or below.

{mp4}CAM_Singapore_Launch_Video{/mp4}

Singapore has late last year renewed the licences of nine international (non-Indian) firms to practice some local law.

A representative office, by contrast, does not allow the practice of law but is intended to function primarily as a business development location (or an useful base to advise local or domestic clients on Indian laws in situ).

Come to Singapore, they said

For a while it was de rigeur for Indian firms to open in Singapore but there has been a bit of a lull in more recent years and a lot of those offices have now closed.

Firms such as Kochhar & Co still maintain representative offices in Singapore, according to its websites.

Correction: Private equity boutique Lexygen had opened there in 2009 and operates a foreign law practice (FLP) with a licence to practice Indian law.

Correction 28 January, 12:49: We have been informed by and Nishith Desai Associates (NDA) that it does not merely have a representative office, as previously reported, but actually holds a “foreign law practice with a license to practice Indian law” in Singapore. The firm has been there since 2005, and its office is headed by Vivek Kathpalia who is based there and also heads the firm’s East Asia business, including Japan and South Korea.

In 2014, SNG & Partners opened in Singapore (though it is not listed on its website anymore).

Wadia Ghandy had opened there in 2011, but then closed its Singapore office in 2014, after the commercials did not quite “click”, according to the firm at the time.

Dua Associates opened there in 2010, but its website also does not list a Singapore presence anymore.

It is also not the first time that Amarchand Mangaldas, as it once was, had flirted with Singapore. Shardul Shroff, the then Delhi-based managing partner of CAM legacy firm Amarchand Mangaldas (now chairman of CAM-rival Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas), had said in 2014 that the firm was eyeing a future office in the financial hub.

Of course, that never happened and the two halves of the firm broke up a short while later.

Dude, CAM pays around 17-18 Lakhs INR to freshly recruited associates and around 30 Lakhs to SA1. Do you think its lesser than other firms? No way, its one of the market leading pay structure

Bhai @Notsure - Aap kaam me bohot achche hoge, isliye aap ko mil raha hoga 30. I left CAM for JSA, and boy they pay a bomb. Literally double. Lot of variable factors of course - no 8% rule in CAM, how did the FY went, how did the team perform. But even after discounting all of that, CAM (and SAM) do pay substantially lower than market standard for any position. This is open secret.
Guest 28 Jan 2021, 11:53

If it is open, then why keep it a secret? You mentioned three firms, why not state clearly how much each pays? Others who are/were working elsewhere can say those. At least let the comments section be full of actual useful info for a change rather than muck. Why would a firm want to hide what it pays anyway?

CAM pays 13lpa to A0s, inclusive of a variable bonus. SAM is more or less around the same amount as far as I know. JSA pays substantially less to A0s because of their stupid JA then A system, but once you become A1 you earn bill share which typically comes out to around 20-22lpa inclusive of bonus while SAM CAM do not give substantive raise until SA. So a JSA A1 can easily outearn a SAM/CAM SA1.

Bro, JSA doesn't pay that much. Their pay at SA1 level is significantly lower than pay at SAM/CAM. SAM pays around 25 lakhs p.a. to SA1

@Ghanta sir - Thats not the general picture at JSA. Assuming you were an SA, your team had steady work flow, there is no reason why you wouldnt have been compensated well. I know for a fact that an SA2 once took home 25 lacs as his/her 8%. So what I am saying that if there was enough work flow (team met targets), then you would have had done well at SA level.

One particular EP (a good one) had a very bad year and several ppl left from his/ her team this year. If you are from his/ her team then I understand you had low work flow.

See, I dont work for a good guy/ girl. He/ she is also typical sadist equity partner. I got paid well last year and decently this year. Any day better than CAM.

@ Mere baki bhaiyon asking me to divulge - Dont you think if I divulge too much it will be very easy for JSA ppl to identify me?
Incorrect 29 Jan 2021, 04:58
+0 -0
That's absolutely incorrect. SA1 at JSA is a fixed retainer of 24lpa with a bonus of 4-6 lakhs. Any SA making 4x will easily take home 30lpa.

Why do top rankers of NLUs join CAM/SAM? If CAM pays 13 LPA and trilegal pays 15.4 LPA, why do students not join trilegal instead of CAM? I was told that CAM pays 15 LPA to A0s whoch is almost the same as trilegal or Luthra does. S&R is the only firm which pays higher.

I know a lot of seniors of my college who received day zero offers from both Trilegal and CAM, almost everyone picked CAM over trilegal.

Why? Could somone please tell?
Well 28 Jan 2021, 16:24

Couple of things @curious boy (I had the same questions couple of years ago):

1. At fresher level, SAM CAM do pay well. But the increments go from bad to worse. You will be stuck between 15-20 lacs bracket for years,
2. SAM/ CAM collectively hire more number of ppl due to size - hence more accommodative (and visible).
3. SAM/ CAM are good training grounds (not that others are bad). Suggestion: Join SAM/ CAM for 1st 4 years, then move.
4. Brand value of having worked at SAM/ CAM is actually a lot (and real). Because they train you like that. After 2-5 years at SAM/ CAM, you can pretty much get into any place that does law.
5. I have noticed (my personal observation) that SAM/ CAM are more amenable to hire freshers, as a matter of policy, and then train them. Where as other firms prefer to hire pre-trained laterals (saves cost).

These are the reasons I feel people (including me 5-6 years back) prefer for SAM/ CAM over others. Others feel free to add yours.

I think it has got a bit to do with the image that these firms have in law schools. While SCAM stick to toppers, Trilegal is rank agnostic. So in the same race of being the toppers, and being identified as such, people end up taking SCAM, I think.

Do law firms fire associates? I’ve joined a few months back from the 2020 batch and it’s been work from home for me. But I keep making a lot of mistakes and fucking up. The partner also treats me like I’m an idiot and associates primarily give me work. If I am guessing it right, you will soon be an 'available' resource and will be doing DDs for several teams - not getting any real work from your own team. Then you will get fed up of the monotony and resign. Not commenting on your skill bro/ sis. Some times you just dont fit with a team/ firm. In some other firm/ team, you might turn out to be a rockstar. Point being, never let anyone make you feel less or call in judgement your work - provided you are confident that you turned around a decent product. You will find your fit sooner or later, and then sky is (or not) the limit :)

It was tough to start with a clean slate after back to back conments/ more mark ups than my peers but I did after lots of Yoga/mental health breaks and lots of real time motivation from many people in different fields. We think we the only ones to struggle when in reality many fail in their first attempt at something (anything, even a job). Also, it is okay not to fit in, but not okay not to try your best. I avoid / dislike anti-BJP and pro-BJP discussions at every other party, family gathering, etc. that I attend. But when I see these 4-5 discussions on Legally India, I suddenly feel those anti-BJP and pro-BJP discussions are way better.

@Kian - Yaar comments section ko do parts me divide kar do. These 4-5 topics in one part and every other topic in the other part.

In addition, there are 4-5 jobless trolls who deliberately write the same things about these topics in all the posts. Kian should have a spam tag along with the trollish one. If you are making random comments that have got no relation with the post itself, then mark it as spam.

Hi Kian,

It would be really helpful if you could create a post on the current packages at Tier 1 and Tier 2 firms. This would prevent salary discussions being done on comment threads which are irrelevant to the original post. If you could at least indicate that you are working such a salary post to be posted in the near future, that would really help.

Thanks

High time CAM invested in real people who do real work ...is it so difficult for the Shroff' s to identify the real hard workers? ...or are they surrounded by the wrong advisors plus a zero capable HR?
