Dua partner Himanshu Narayan to return to (Cyril) Amarchand Delhi with team

Narayan jumps Dua ship
Narayan jumps Dua ship

Dua Associates corporate and private equity partner Himanshu Narayan is to join Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas with his team-member partner Amarta Roy, Bar & Bench has first reported.

We had reached out to Narayan last week and earlier today after several sources had confirmed his move, but he had declined to comment by the time of publication.

The 1995 NLSIU Bangalore graduate had moved to Dua from erstwhile Amarchand Mangaldas in 2010.

While at Amarchand, in August 2008, Narayan had been one of the first five partners to have been elevated into its partial equity lockstep system, alongside corporate partner Ashwath Rau, banking partners Gunjan Shah and Leena Chacko and projects partner Jatin Aneja.

While Cyril Amarchand senior Delhi partner Percy Billimoria is due to go independent come August, Narayan’s joining is likely to coincide with Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas corporate partner Akila Agrawal joining the firm around the same time.

Why are all firms giving your rival sites the scoop and not you?

Which firms? Generally, as far as I know, SAM and Luthra always give scoops to B&B, but other than that, we manage ok I think :)

From what I understand anecdotally from partners, B&B also seems happier to rush ahead to press without trying to get through to partners first, whereas we generally try to wait to give them an opportunity to at least announce to their old firm that they're leaving (which sometimes means we lose scoops, but so it is...)

Himanshu! Why this act of harakiri?
You’ve worked at AMARCHAND before and know the man and his family!
At your age and stage, money should not be a factor?
And your going to be reporting to our forming a combination with Akila?
I can’t think of a worse recipie.....

Why do such experienced partners need a firm to house them? And they are now changing homes like clothes. Are they afraid of being left without clothes if they start their own firms.

How will his equation with Akila work? Who heads what? As usual complete confusion. Too many cooks and too much musical chairs. The family is too insecure to have one clear leader.

Akila will head. Himanshu is not known to manage people very efficiently. Even his own team has never been more than 1 or 2 people (irrespective of their designation). Akila on the other hand has managed a team of 15 or more and has better sense of managing a firm.

After slipping so badly in the mergermarket rankings CAM needed the infusion of new quality partners in corporate.

As long as there is that one person in Delhi who claims to be everyone's best friend but secretly keeps plotting ways to stay relevant and in power, no matter who joins or what their credibility is, this office will not stabilize. The Shroffs need to pay heed to what other well meaning people are telling them and not blindly believe whatever it is that is screeched into their ear. Delhi fate is sealed if this continues.

Two partners known for quality work standards at one go is not bad! So long as you keep stacking up good lawyers in office, the rest takes care of itself (baseline analysis).

This comes as a very surprising move. My take- this might have triggered as a result of the recent change in Dua internal dynamics and not because of money. People in Dua will understand what I am trying to say here- that place is not about money but more than that. That is why most people who leave Dua tendto return again not once but sometimes twice or even thrice. You realise it's worth when you don't get the same warmth and comfort elsewhere. That said, obviously some things need to be corrected at Dua as well to stop good people from leaving in the first place. This is certainly more about Dus and not CAM as this option was always available to HN so why now. Ase rgards this move, I will not be surprised if you see a news item in the next 3 years or may be earlier that HN and/ or Amarta return to Dua. Till the time Mr. Dua is still managing the show, Dua will always have its foot in the door.

This is good news for CAM. Finally it is getting its act together. Two stellar senior partners for corporate in Delhi. Cyril should have done this in 2013 only. In any case better late than never.

So he was made equity partner in 2008 at AMSS, but what now? Is CAM going to offer him equity? Apparently, in Delhi only Percy has a equity stake.

If he's being offered equity, then what about other senior partners at CAM. If not, what come to CAM Himanshu?

Percy has.. or had? Or is it till be exits fully?

Anyway am sure Akila will be handed also no?

I’m sure Akila will want as much equity as her batchmate and Pak Reeba has, which is quite a bit I understand. And He-Man-shoe will want even more!!
Wonder how they will meet targets!!

Did Amarta Roy get partnership at CAM? Or did he have to settle for PA or equivalent? His name doesn't feature in the list of partners on the CAM website: https://www.cyrilshroff.com/partners/. Hopefully he will be promoted in the next round.
