Dua Associates Chennai partner Senthil Kumar Ramamoorthy has now been confirmed and appointed as additional judge of the Madras high court.

His elevation comes more than a year after he had first been recommended for judgeship by the Supreme Court’s collegium in December 2017.

Justice Ramamoorthy is very probably the first partner of a modern Indian law firm to ascend to the bench.

He was sworn in today and his appointment as additional judge would initially be for a period of two years, according to the government notification and a press release sent out by Dua Associates.

He was the founder of Dua’s Chennai office, and was long-time counsel for several foreign law firms in the AK Balaji writ petition against the entry of foreign lawyers before the Madras high court.

The reality is - that you earn to feed yourself in law firms. Judges' expenses are automatically taken care off. And that too, in a grand style. Which is why, they are the Lords. I speak from a close hand experience.

Is that coming from a law student, yet to enter the realms of corporate world? Wait until you step in the corporate law firms - only to know how little a style a partner lives in? My dear child, judges actually live in a lot of unquestionable style - much much more than how a normal corporate minion lives.

Its a good thing law firm partners are being looked at. Hopefully these people have made their money and will not do favors to their former clients who may be plenty, once they go to the bench. Going to the bench is a fine capstone to a legal career, especially when law firm partners of good firms may come from top law schools. Ultimately the high courts must have thoroughly honest judges who are legal experts, know litigation, understand arguments and enjoy reading legal opinions and books. In the lower courts there is plenty of dishonesty so if in the high courts also there is dishonesty it becomes a very sad situation.
