J Sagar Associates (JSA) funds formation partner Jay Gandhi and his team of five associates will join Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM) in Mumbai under former JSA senior partner and SAM Mumbai Akshay Chudasama.

Gandhi specialises in investment funds, private equity placements and M&A.

The University of Bombay LLB graduate also holds a bachelor of commerce and a 2002-chartered accountancy (CA) qualification.

We have reached out to Gandhi for comment.

Chudasama commented: “[We’re] really happy to have him on board, he is a funds lawyers and used to run the funds formation practice at JSA. It was a piece that was missing here at SAM, and he’s coming on board with his team.”

“It’s a very important piece of the puzzle to make sure that we’re full service and (serving our clients),” he added.

JSA managing partner Berjis Desai commented: “Jay is a very fine lawyer and we wish him luck in his career move.”

“It’s been fantastic, very very exhilerating. It’s been busy but as you know we’ve hit the ground running. It’s fun and games,” Chudasama commented on the experience of setting up the office. “There’s a bit of everything going on, the firm is relatively busy. It’s early days yet, but let me put it this way: we have much more work than I had originally expected or anticipated in such a short period of time - it’s been six weeks.”

another blow to JSA. The wheels are coming off 1 by 1 !! Once Berjis goes, this firm will struggle.

SAM is in top form yet again.

I'm wondering how often will Berjis be making the above statement till the time he retires. LOL

Just to be nit-picky and politically correct, shall we say [him/her] and [his/her] as placeholders in the template language? :)

Hi Kian,

It seems Asim Abbas (TMT Partner) has quit Kco and has joined SAM too in Delhi about 3 months back. Maybe you should report it too?

I dont think this is a good strategy by SAM. Individual merit aside, this sort of teamfull hiring is only going to make a silo-type office where loyalties are to individuals and not to the firm. SAM Mumbai must be a weird place to work with these autonomous teams. Much better for Shardul to have hired a few top guns like AC and then asked them to hire individual lawyers.

Do you work in SAM Mumbai or is this just a shot in the dark?
Chu 22 Jul 2015, 19:27

Time to rename SAM Mumbai to AC& Partners - Akshay coterie.Chu is trying to recreate the JSA model which means competition and infrastructure practice will be done out of Delhi by Chops and PE,funds and securities from Mumbai.
Chi 23 Jul 2015, 08:14

Isn't that a fallacy given that SAM has a top drawer infra partner in Mumbai?

Why not go for a simple headline for a change, LI. It doesnt effect make proper sense when one reads it the first time. in your attempt to come up with juicy/interesting headlines, LI often makes it chaotic. keep it simple, silly.!! #justsaying

I think it's entirely speculation - I don't think there is any evidence at present that Aashit Shah has left or is intending to leave...

Very lawyer like response!:) So you have neither accepted nor denied certain offers may have been made. Just that there is no evidence in the public domain.

Read the title first as 'JSA funds partner Jay Gandhi & team to join Chudasama as SAM-Bombay missing puzzle piece' as JSA funding the partner and his team to join SAM because they were considerate about SAM having a massing piece and thought 'Such nice people.'
