This is great news for CAM. I have worked opposite Karan on a couple of occasions and he is one of the nicest people I have dealt with. Many congratulations to him on the move.

News item should be who gets to replace him at BVP!

I don't think they have any money. Probably why Karan left as well.

CAM has so much money. Connections to India's second richest man along with an impressive client roster enables it to make any technically proficient person as a partner. CAM after AZB Bombay has the highest number of institutional clients and their client roster is just so impressive. Because of this all partners including equity partners do not have to get their hands dirty worry about clients.

Then why do they pay the least to retainers....

Nobody cares about retainers. For one who is going, there are 100 at the door waiting for an opportunity to join CAM.

What If 100 decide to leave......Theres some gossip going around that major number of exits at lower levels taking place because of pandemic overwork and then grumblings about bonus/increments?Is this true?is it like your normal/high attrition or higher
or lower than that?

Last year they were the first to announce paycuts.Much said on concall about promoters support and will step in.Then comes news of purchasing additional properties in worli.atleast, don't do this in a pandemic, esspecially when the firm has no struggle in comparison to other law firms.

Why does CAM have any attrition at all with people across ranks leaving?I know money is one factor for the freshers and lower ranks, they figure out their peers pay and the shine of the brand wears off as a factor. But does client list factor in?A lot of joiners particularly talking about the AZB deals especially in the pandemic year.

Not fully right, simply because if they were in such a great position then why were they the first amongst all law firms to announce the pay cut last year.If they were confident of clients/business the pay cut move paints them in bad light. If not,it's probably cause the competition is catching up.

I think Karan is brilliant, but this just bizarre. Who swims across the Rio Grande to swim back into Mexico (not specifically CAM, but law firms in general!)

Bad move like a demotion, to go back to law firm from in-house counsel.
No move 21 Apr 2021, 18:01

After having spent ten years as a GC, going back to a law firm and that too as a non-equity partner in a pool of so many, does not justify the move!

CAM partner - even non equity is more prestigious than any inhouse job. Please

At some time,do wake up to the reality of the split and the advantage of the old brand name now split up too,so could be running out.The competition has caught up, time to rebrand.Let go of the bubble.

If CAM partners are better than any in houser than CAM PAs are better than CEOs cause they run everything around there.

How India has changed. Now, even legal teams which were considered as back office in any PE firm, MNC even a decade back is suddenly more prestigious than being a partner in a firm as great and mighty as CAM. Incredible.
Back office speaking 23 Apr 2021, 12:33

You are never at a prestigious position in a promoter controlled firm, not even at CEO position, in any industry. You have a glorified title, biggggg salary, get to boss around many but you are never a big man in such a place because you are never going to be the THE big man ever.Thats why the head of a back team of a back office starts to look like a prestigious becomes position. The more great and mighty your promoter firm the lesser you would matter. Those "even legal teams" that aare considered "back office" are building that Incredible India.

Take it up .It's your own mighty and great CAM recruiting an in-house guy been away from law firm universe from 10 years, even when they got some 140-150 partners.

Mighty,great- apt for law firm description?.Typical pattern of arrogance where a particular family company or firm has made it their Monopoly/dominance in a industry. They use such words for themselves as they think they own the industry and are like rulers, nawabs etc.

CAM had called back employees to office in October 2020. They got no financial problems and with their resources for WFH ,thats just inhuman and terrible behaviour towards your own employees. Its not like the employees get some great treatment or respect all the time, but do you actually need to do such an action of making employees feel small and of no value? Big PR announcements were made for WFH categories, you obviously have the resources for WFH,so why the need to call back employees to office physically in October right in the middle of the pandemic. You know what is actually great - when SAM puts out calls to arrange medicines for their employee

This move just makes no sense. For KP or CAM. Thought they just hired Ravindra Bandhkavi last year or something. That didn’t help enough that they now got someone who has been out of the law firm universe for 10 odd years? And for what? Similarly what does KP gain from this - I doubt it’s money if he isn’t even equity.

Did a deal opposite him a couple of years ago. He'll put most other tier 1 partners to shame, he's that good, I have to admit. Save your 10 years out of the law firm universe logic. We give ourselves too much importance. I'd have expected him to have moved out of India. Surprising move, I agree.

The move from in house to law firm, bad decision. He may have picked CAM given the old Amarchand connect, but how smart is this pick and how going back to law firm works out, only time will tell.

Second this. Having worked with him and opposite him - he's razor sharp, has the ability to break things down and shepherd different viewpoints, and if anything is more hands on (being the whole and sole legal at BVP) and commercial than most law firm partners I know. Given the state of CAM, can only say that they benefit more from this than he does. Fantastic hire.

How could he choose an in house job over AMSS Mumbai in the first place. Remember , in house counsels have to give up their practice certificate in the bar. They are not even proper lawyers. He will now get back his COP.

Whereas law firm people get to keep their certificates but not the practice.
