Khaitan & Co has hired HSA Advocates partner Akshay Malhotra as a partner in its energy, infrastructure and resources (EIR) practice in the Delhi office, making him the second partner hire announced by the firm this week.
The Symbiosis graduate had been at HSA since 2016, making associate partner in 2017 and partner in March 2020.
Before that he had also worked at Luthra & Luthra, as it then was, as well as a stint at Trilegal and the first three years of his career from 2009 again at HSA.
He was one of the two partners who eventually decided not to join DSK Legal with seven others but stayed behind at HSA.
Khaitan executive director Amar Sinhji commented: “With the massive push on Infrastructure by the Government under the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) mechanism, we foresee tremendous growth prospects for our EIR practice. We will continue to look at inorganic growth in this sector.”
HSA managing partner Hemant Sahai commented: “Akshay has been part of the firm during his formative years and it’s a matter of pride for me that he is a recognised practitioner.
“It is also a matter of personal satisfaction for me that the fact that we encourage and inculcate leadership within the firm is recognised and acknowledged by peers. I wish Akshay all the best in his future endeavours.”
Last week Khaitan had announced the joining of Advaita’s Sudipta Bhattacharjee as an indirect tax partner.

Honestly, while I like my NLU tag I feel it’s knowledge that matters and I would love to work with him once I graduate, whether at HSA or Khaitan is immaterial.
I can also confirm TTA doesn’t pay 20 at A0 - not sure of exact figure to though.
Now in my personal opinion while not the worst place to work by any stretch of imagination, TTA is def not in the leagues of CAM etc. Highly overrated and pedastalised in law schools

The practice area which the firm is renowned for is in shambles and it's doubtful that the current lot who've come with such commitments would be able to deliver. My best wishes to Akshay and I hope Hemant can revive what's left of the firm.

Lesser Firm- HSA has been widely acknowledged as one of the best firms for EIR/projects. Do you know the concept of specialist firms?
KCO is Foreign firm dominated- I do not understand this but in case you mean that partners have worked with foreign firms before joining KCO, there are few of them but majority have spent their entire career working in India. So, we're good here.
Not a focus area- For a full service law firm to be successful, every practice area should be top notch. A good firm accords same degree of "focus" to all their practice areas. Even assuming for a second that it may not be a focus area, a good partner can certainly do world of a good to boost a specific practice and make it a go-to firm for clients.
No revenues- I am sure with the kind of revenues, they can buy a couple of Bentleys for you (but they should choose not to). Come and ask for books of accounts.
Also, please don’t undermine the existing talent at KCO. Attorneys like Gehan and Jhinook who manage EIR mandates are quite well respected. Folks here speak with such authority like experts with little if no understanding of KCO or HSA or for that matter law firms.
