Khaitan grows to 127 partners in corp, CM-heavy promo round: 8 new equity, 15 new AP • 4 from SLS; 3 from NUJS, GLC, NLU-J; 2 from HNLU, NLS

8 new Khaitan equity partners: Welcome
8 new Khaitan equity partners: Welcome

Khaitan & Co has promoted eight of its associate partners to equity partnership, as well as made 15 new associate partners, and one new counsel (see full list below).*

Overall, this year’s round is even bigger than last year’s promotion round, which had seen 11 new equity partners and 9 new associate partners (though this year saw two fewer new equity partners).

This promotion puts Khaitan & Co total partnership headcount to 127 partners, of whom 17 are women. It has 36 salaried partners and 91 equity partners. The firm’s total fee-earner headcount, including partners, is now 545, with offices in Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi.

By practice area

By far the biggest practice area in this round was corporate, which saw 4 new equity partners, 7 new associate partners, and one counsel.

Securities and capital markets too has seen huge investment: 3 new equity partners. That’s not surprising: as we had reported in February, Khaitan had grown its capital markets team to one of the biggest in India, at 7 equity partners. This would now make it 10, which is two more than Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas.

Dispute resolution got one new equity partner, Peshwan Jehangir, and 4 new associate partners.

Other practice areas had no new equity partners, though banking & finance welcomed two associate partners in Mumbai, with one associate partner each in real estate and in direct tax.

By law school

Of the new partners and associate partners, the law school LLB breakup is as follows:

  • SLS Pune: 4
  • NUJS Kolkata: 3

Congrats to everyone! What kind of pay scales are we talking about for the Associate Partners? I'm sure there must be changes from the last salary survey conducted by LI .

Kian - we really need an answer to this question. With massive promotions being announced in almost all law firms, it’s becoming increasingly important to know how much a partner/PA/SA is making. At the end of the day, it’s money what matter. Designations are just namesake. Yes, it can definitely be used to secure a job outside the law firm circus.

I'm sure everyone's thinking of a different name :)

As mentioned in a previous story, we're censoring any names of people who should have (or should not have) been promoted, because to some extent it's very hard to verify if someone has been genuinely overlooked, or whether someone is trolling someone else who has been intentionally overlooked, etc...

whats the point of publishing such redacted message. Doesn't censor anything. So why publish? If you don't have any problems people getting references, just publish the full message. Don't try and console your soul of being the huble one when you 'technically' did not divulge names.

Kian, how does Kco compare to both Amarchands and AZB, in partner gender ratio? From what I gather, it’s not the most gender neutral place to work at. Any insights?
Answer 12 Apr 2018, 17:14

There are a few women partners - kalpana unadkat, bijal, daksha bakshi, surbhi, Pooja Patel, avantika, Savita Singh etc.
Guest 13 Apr 2018, 04:56

Yes but how many of these actually have a seat at the decision making table? Does the “all middle aged men with housewives” run executive committee actually consider their views?
More importantly, while deciding on elevations, are the same yardsticks used to judge men and women candidates?
Guest 14 Apr 2018, 14:55
+6 -3
Middle aged men with housewives? Who do you want the partners to elect? Partners from the 2006 batch or a blend of experience an performers/rainmakers who can call the shots? Or the mother-daughter duo (just because they are female) who threw a hissy fit on not being promoted?

LOL.

And how do you even know that the "middle aged men" are married to "housewives"? Guess whose gendered thinking is showing up?
Facts1 23 Apr 2018, 08:22
+4 -0
1. All KCO decisions are claimed to be taken by the Exec Committee
2. All current EC members of KCO are "middle aged men"
3. All their wives are "housewives"
4. KCO can't even provide women safe transport back home when working late - citing logistical issues
5. All women at KCO know that once they get the PA tag, it's time to start thinking of next moves
6. A partner famously walked out of an interview of a female candidate and asked the HR not to shortlist women as "they will get married and quit, so what's the point"
7. Another partner famously asked a new mother why she was back at work and missing her child's milestones

But by all means, bury your head in the sand. And oh yes, your disrespectful manner underscores the attitude of the organisation towards women. Hissy fits are those that are thrown by KCO management when AVK put in her papers and they resorted to emotional blackmail and misguided quotes on Bar & Bench to pressurise her to stay.

Great to see so many promotions at the equity partnership level, though not sure if the equity that is distributed is sizable or negligible, but nonetheless it sends the right message to the employees, that they have a realistic chance at hitting the top.

Also, great to see guys like Aditya and Madhur being promoted - their focus and patience under pressure, and humility in terms of their dealing always makes it a pleasure to work with them.

And those well-deserving who didn't get promoted. Do not feel sad. We know the realities of these times. It'all be fine. Ok. Bye. Gonna wipe my tears.

I am a big fan of Haigreve and no offence meant whatsoever to anyone but I cant but wonder how Khaitan manages to make so many partners - on the corporate side it has some 50-60 partners and looking at the number of deals that are reported, on an average each partner would be doing 1-2 transactions. Its impressive how Khaitan still makes it work!

Would you rather be reporting deals to be reported for BD purposes or be happy with the money you are raking and work you are doing for your clients who don't want all the jazz in public domain. There is a corporate partner who was running 18 transactions at one time in March. Yes you heard it right 18. So ya, HK has his vision and the hunger missing in some other firms at the moment. Always gonna make it work. When people are content they perform better.
