Kochhar & Co has promoted litigation partner Syed Naqvi to its equity partnership that now consists of five advocates.

Naqvi (pictured) is now one of three senior partners in the firm’s litigation department with his focus on corporate commercial disputes, civil litigation and arbitration.

Naqvi had served as a managing associate at Mulla & Mulla & Craigie Blunt & Caroe before joining Kochhar & Co as partner in 2008.

His litigation career spans 20 years including 11 years of practice under senior advocate Anil Divan and six years at his last firm Mulla & Mulla.

Naqvi told Legally India: “We are going to dedicate and work towards growing the litigation practice of the firm to even greater heights this year.

“I will be working very closely with the other six offices of Kochhar & Co in order to execute our strategy of increasing big ticket litigation and arbitration; we’ll also look to recruit more lawyers in the litigation team as a part of the plan.”

He noted that while revenue sharing was one of the perks of becoming a senior partner at the firm, the actual motivating factor was the recognition of one’s work and the ability to carry it forward with passion.

The firm has a total of one chairman cum managing partner, five senior partners and 18 partners spread across its six offices in India.

Naqvi specialises in electricity, mining and water laws. He was appointed to advise Narmada Control Authority as a legal consultant in the contentious dispute relating to rehabilitation of those displaced due to the construction of the dam.

Internal promotions at other levels were announced in December of last year at the firm.
