L&L (routinely) promotes five to (salaried) partner (+20 other fee-earner promos)

L&L Partners has announced the promotion of five of its lawyers in its corporate partnership, a hint of business as usual against the continuing backdrop of the bitter dispute between the two sole equity partners over the future of the firm.

Senior partner Mohit Saraf had made the announcement in an email to the firm yesterday evening (12 October), noting that managing partner Rajiv Luthra had been responsible for the delay (besides several other points, such as claiming the resignation of the latter).

Update 02:00: Luthra had denied in a later email that he had been responsible for the delay, stating:

Apropos the promotions, I had confirmed Partners’ recommendations and sought confirmation from the Corporate Partners on Thursday, October 8, 2020, and had informed them that I intend to make the promotion announcements today. Additionally, on Saturday, October 10, 2020, I had informed the Corporate Partners group about the induction of two equity partners - Mr. Aniket Sengupta and Mr. Harish Kumar…

…attached is the list of all the promotees…many congratulations to all of you - this promotion is entirely well deserved for each one of you, endorsed by each one of your partners, as well. Please also join me in congratulating Aniket Sengupta and Harish and welcoming them on board.

I continue to remain committed to taking our Firm to greater heights.

The following five lawyers been promoted to non-equity partner at the firm:

  • partner designate Vivek Pareek,
  • managing associate Avinash Subramanian,
  • managing associate Avisha Gupta,
  • managing associate Sumithra Suresh, and
  • managing associate Satadru Goswami.

Luthra’s two new (possible) equity partners

The promotions are somewhat unusual, in that Rajiv Luthra had announced on 10 October that he had promoted two of the firm’s partners - Delhi-based Harish Kumar and Aniket Sengupta - to equity partnership.

Luthra’s email did not include details on what exactly such an equity partnership would look like, and we have not been able to confirm whether equity has actually been disbursed to Kumar and Sengupta.

As such, it is currently unclear on whether the equity promotions have taken effect, since fellow equity partner Saraf has contested whether Luthra could do so without his consent.

Luthra had stated that new equity partner applicants should have a minimum of 16 years “standing at the bar”, though he had added “anyone who does not meet the criteria but feels they have compelling credentials, to also receive equity at this stage may also write to me stating clearly the reasons asap”.

Kumar, a corporate and M&A lawyer, seems to have been able to make the case without the 16-year requirement: he had worked as a company secretary for around 10 years until around 2011, before obtaining his law degree from Delhi University, joining what-was-then Amarchand Mangaldas. This was followed by DMD Advocates and moving to Link Legal India Law Services as a partner, before joining to L&L in 2018 as a partner designate, where he made (salaried) partner in April 2019.

Sengupta, however, would have cleared the post-qualification experience (PQE) hurdle outright: he is a 2000 NLSIU Bangalore graduate who had worked at Luthra since 2003, making (salaried) partner there in 2008. He specialises in banking and finance.

Please report on other promotions too. There have been other promotions announced in (yet another round of mud slinging) long drawn email from the self proclaimed godfather MS. Why restrict this news only about partners or you think Senior Asses, Managing Asses promotions don't deserve a mention?

This is quite impressive I must say.

Genuine question: how much of a firm culture is there at NALSAR? For example: at NUJS its all about getting the firm job, so in comparison how are things at NALSAR coz it doesn't seem like they are as gung-ho about firms

Please do not reveal your ignorance about other law schools that you know nothing of but still want to comment about. NUJS has produced a large number of litigators, enterpreneurs, academics, people in the Civil Services, people working in NGOs and policy bodies and in-house lawyers. In fact, the highest number of NLU-graduates working in various Indian law schools at present in various capacities would be from NUJS in terms of absolute numbers (there are at least 40-50 such people), and all the Ivy League universities abroad have NUJS alumni as their students every year. There have been 4 Rhodes scholars from the university, along with recipients of the Chevening, Fulbright, DAAD, Inlacs, Pratibha Singh, and most of the other well-known scholarships. There are at least 25-30 alumni in the Civil Services. There are even students who have spearheaded (or are doing so) successful start-ups and social initiatives while still students. There are even alumni holding political positions in the country, or who have branched off into alternate careers altogether. Only some ignorant commentators here who know almost nothing about the legal world say that students at NUJS only think about law firms, not that there is anything wrong with such thoughts. It is also probably because over the past decade, NUJS has had increasing success with its law firm recruitment, with more students being hired from here by law firms than from anywhere else.

Never claimed any of that. There is indeed an alumnus who is a professional chef now though, and has also won a fellowship to a well-known French institute in that field. Whatever I have said about the alumni in my comment are all accurate and verifiable by people actually associated with the institution. I do not intend to compare ourselves with any other NLU or engage in a juvenile pissing contest of any sort. Only wished to rectify the misconception that NUJS only produces law firm associates. I am sure other NLUs do equally well or even better in all the fields mentioned.

Don't forget innumerable Supreme Court justices (both India and abroad). There is a whisper that the latest US SCOTUS nominee Amy Barett spent a year in NUJS before moving to the US of A. Besides this NUJS has produced a pantheon of Olympic medalists, F1 winners, chip designers, whiskey tasters, military heroes and cunning linguists. Rumour has it that they try to supress the kudos won by their alumni so as to avoid controversy over claims that they dominate world affairs.

There are at least 25 plus in Jindal alone. I'm not going to do your research for you. Visit the websites of the universities and find out for yourself. There are another 7 currently teaching at NUJS itself full time or part time. There are others at NALSAR, NLUJ etc. If I wanted to include LLM and PhD people, the number would almost double and not simply stay under 50. If only trolls would have bothered to do research.

What are the promoters doing?! They are killing the firm that they have built over all these years. I am amazed at the whale sized egos of the persons involved. For the sake of hundreds of lawyers (if not to avoid further damage to your and the Firm's reputation), please sit across the table and sort this out. The vultures are already circling.

Law school-wise breakup is NALSAR #1 and then NUJS #2. However, please note that LI may possibly remove L&L from the Big 7 placement rankings in future if a split happens, so it is a net loss for both law schools.

3.1 is spot on, so the downvotes are unfortunate. At NUJS and other NLUs outside the Big 3, there is indeed an obsession with law firm jobs. You will find lots of NLSIU/NLUD/NALSAR grads pursing careers in civil service, politics, academics, think tanks, human rights, entrepreneurship etc. Even law firm-ites often start their own law firms, instead working in the same big firm their whole life. The numbers are a lot lower at NUJS. In fact, this may have been a factor in the NIRF perception ranking, since the media tends to highlight pioneers and original thinkers, rather than people who move with the herd. Perception is shaped by the media after all.
Guest 13 Oct 2020, 14:07

Completely false statement. There is no career where in terms of absolute numbers, NUJS graduates are behind anybody from any of these NLUs named. Especially NLUD is too young to have more alumni in any stream. This is just trolling on your part, nothing. Why don't you support your argument with stats from any alternative career line including numbers for other NLUs and for NUJS? Or is your 'perception' like castle in the thin air? Be it Vidhi, PRS, NIPFP, any well known policy body in India employing law grads has NUJS alumni working there. People have this weird inclination of including NLUD everywhere because of the NIRF rank, when NIRF only has one way of measuring graduate outcome, which is median salary and jobs offered. In both of those metrics, NLUD would be behind NUJS. NALSAR is comparable. You mentioned lots of academics and entrepreneurs and several others. Please name 10 academics from NLUD alumni. Or 20 from NALSAR currently working in India. All blustering without substance.

It is mostly because there are a set of people here, or maybe just a couple of people using various pseudonyms, who have an obsession to establish that the university is finished, doesn't have any future, doesn't get any good students or teachers any more, has very limited graduate outcome, and any good student should opt for other NLUs including those which does not have any proven better graduate outcome. Considering the admin is quite lax in actually highlighting the institutional achievements unlike other NLUs, this sort of malicious propaganda often end up becoming the only existing narrative in the public domain. Anybody who is simply contesting such propaganda by not trying to establish their superiority over others, but by simply setting the record straight is not doing any disservice to the institution. You would see that not a single derogatory comment here against the institution mentioned a single piece of fact/stats in their support. The trolling is clearly visible.
