Luthra & Luthra continues boosting corporate: Link Legal’s Alok Sonker to join [UPDATE: as partner designate, for ‘exponential growth’]

LL Alok Sonker to join LL
LL Alok Sonker to join LL

Luthra & Luthra will hire its third lateral corporate partner this year, with Link Legal India Law Services associate partner Alok Sonker due to join in Mumbai next month.

Clarification 19:22: He will be joining as partner designate, a relatively uncommonly used designation at Luthras.

M&A, private equity and corporate commercial lawyer Sonker had joined Link Legal in April 2017 from Khaitan & Co, where he was a senior associate.

He is a 2006 Lucknow University LLB graudate, with a 2008 LLM in business law from NLSIU Bangalore, and four years at erstwhile Rajani Associates before moving to Khaitan in 2013.

We have reached out to Luthra, Link Legal and Sonker for comment.

In January we had reported that Trilegal private equity and M&A counsel Vishwanath Pratap Singh would join the firm in Delhi, and only last month we had reported that Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas corporate partner Jay Parikh would be joining the firm.

Considering Luthra has had less visibility than its rivals in the corporate space and league tables, that is good news for the firm.

Update 19:21: Since publication, Luthra managing partner Rajiv Luthra gave the following statement to Bar & Bench:

Alok will be joining the firm’s Mumbai office as a Partner Designate in the Corporate M&A and Private Equity practice. […]

Our Mumbai office, which has seen exponential growth over the years, recently expanded its operations by taking on additional space. […]

We continue to pursue our growth ambitions; this is an example of how collaboration and advancement are at the heart of L&L’s strategy, demonstrating our vision of structured growth from strength to strength.

There are many new and exciting developments in the pipeline.

LL bhakts will say people keep resigning for health reasons, joining in house, joining other firms, ...
Not admitting things are so rotten there, they are unable to retain talent. Now getting any quality talent will be a big challenge for them.

And what about L&L? Are more exits from L&L also in the offing??? There is a strong buzz about some senior level exits from L&L also... in the spate of new hirings there looks like a real possibility of L&L not being able to keep its existing flock together..

It is confirmed. L&L is offering equity to senior partners this year. Quite a few announcements to take the firm into the right direction (apparently). Few underperformers have been asked to leave. Kian will be the new best friend of the firm. Ok last line may not be true but rest is coming from a reliable source.

An associate in the Delhi office was telling me that the increments for this year were at around 2-3% only for Delhi and Mumbai at least.

At this rate, Link Legal is not even matching inflation. No wonder there are so many exits.
A3 3 Jul 2018, 07:25

That might be because of their performance. I got good reviews from my reporting senior and I got an increment of 4%, which seems to be the highest increment this year.

They should blame their own performance, not the firm. Our CEO has a keen understanding of the value people bring to the firm.

Its purely a lala business now. You wait for 3 months to know your increment (dont want to comment on peanut % as some bhakt or chamcha might come up with shallow response "increment was done as per performance". Then you wait for 4 more months to get your variable components which again is peanuts for sake of brivety i am not repeating bla bla bla and by this mechanism again 6 months variable get blocked. Cherry on top when people leave they forfeit their increment and variable.

This is how the promoters and CEO have been getting richer - you hire anyone promising any package because you don't have to bother about paying. No one stays on that long. No one cares about increments and variable in this crappy place few months after joining - just pray to get out somehow.
Sanju Baba 4 Jul 2018, 23:56

Kuch bhi. The increments have been substantially more than what is being discussed here. We have got our arrears as well as increments. I have heard that bonus will also be paid soon. Stop spreading this baseless news. Majority of the firms have not paid increments so far. Lot has changed in the firm for good.

So keep calm and focus on your work. For discussion on salary and bonus, Baba bolta hai.. ab bass ho Gaya

The firm is known for not paying people who leave. Leave the firm and then assess for yourself. I have been a prey to their tactics and worst of all Sharma Ji will not even bother to speak to you about the exit. You will be forwarded to the brother in accounts for useless time pass discussion.
