Platinum picks up Vinod Dhall post TTA break-up as senior advisor

Vinod Dhall, now in collaboration with Platinum

Talwar Thakore Associates (TTA) former competition head and executive chairman Vinod Dhall, whose collaboration relationship we had reported on Tuesday to have ended, has resurfaced quickly and joined Platinum Partners with the “senior advisor” tag, Bar & Bench has reported.

Platinum partner Karam Daulet-Singh had confirmed his joining the firm, though we could not confirm at the time of going to press whether this would be a full-time role.

We have reached out to Platinum and Dhall for comment in what precise capacity he will joining the firm.

Dhall had operated an independent competition practice in his own name before quasi-merging his practice with TTA (although it was branded as Vinod Dhall in collaboration with TTA).

That relationship recently ended, with his second-in-command, Ram Kumar, staying behind at TTA as counsel.

Dhall had faced court challenges, claiming he broke Bar Council of India (BCI) rules by representing clients before the Competition Commission of India (CCI), of which he had been chairman until 2009 before becoming a private practitioner.

This is a brave move by Platinum after TATA broke off with him ‘mutually’, seemingly because of the breach by DAhll. It makes sense for Platinum given their reliance on only corporate. They need to branch out from being such a niche firm and they need more senior people after Nihar left. This seems brave.

Based on my knowledge, I think that Platinum could not care less about the comments posted here. They seem to be functioning underground, no one knows about them, who and how many work there, understated, no marketing, but they continue to be present in high stake matters. Truly India's Wachtell!!

I'm sure Wachtell does not feed off matter from a Magic Circle firm. It should be renamed Platinum Call Centre.

Your knowledge is either very poor or you are being economical with the truth. Freshfields India zindabad!

People need to stop comparing these firms to Wachtell. Seriously.

Democracy hai, why can't you compare, they appear to be operating in a similar way! In any case, why Platinum or any other Indian firm needs to be benchmarked against any foreign firm. As long as a firm and its lawyers, whether it is SAM, AZB, KHaitan of the world or the niche firms like Platinum or S&R, are serious at what they do-suiting to the Indian market, everyone is a white shoe or magic circle in their own way.
