PXV breakaway RDA spawns Arindam Pal’s Augustus, also with national plans

Cal courts: Fairly good work
Cal courts: Fairly good work
Exclusive: Arindam Pal, who had left PXV Law Partners late last year with co-founding partner Rohit Das but ended up starting Augustus Law Chambers in Kolkata independently, is planning to aggressively expand the six-lawyer firm to other cities.

“It’s been three months of fairly good work we’ve done,” Pal told Legally India two weeks ago but added: “I definitely plan on opening up in Bombay.” The timing would depend on forging the right local relationships, which should not be hurried.

“First the intention is to get good people on board, then to aggressively recruit and to expand to other cities,” he noted. “It’s very easy to grow fast but retaining that structure is difficult.”

Augustus was set up by Pal as partner and Adwitiyaa Das as designated partner after the split from PXV became effective on 15 February.

The firm currently specialises in representing banks and financial institutions in security enforcement proceedings in court and before the Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRT), as well as assisting local developers in real estate matters.

The name, Augustus, was a personal preference of Pal’s derived from the ancient Roman name that means “the illustrious one” or “someone who is respected”, Pal said. “It conveys royalty, seriousness and combines intellect and hard work.”

Pal and Rohit Das, who had separated from PXV with Das intending to jointly re-start PXV’s precursor firm RDA Legal, eventually decided to both be independent, they explained. Augustus’ offices are near Minto Park and neighbouring the offices of RDA Legal.

“We had our discussions: we wanted to get together but were not able to finalise on the terms and conditions so right now we’ve kept it a bit open ended. If the opportunity is there then we can do something,” said Pal.

“Rohit still remains one of my closest friends – I’ve known him now for a decade,” added Pal, who both graduated from NUJS Kolkata in 2006. “He keeps referring work and since I don’t have a Bombay office as of now, I keep using services of Rohit and his team when the situation arises.”

Das said: “We had a very mature discussion – the business models were different and it appeared that it could be better if we started two firms rather than one.

“We are on very good terms, we are still referring work to each other, so it’s a very, very amicable thing.”

Das added that RDA, which has just crossed 10 lawyers in size, was currently consolidating the Mumbai and Kolkata offices, with “plans for expansion throughout the year” to other cities, including Delhi.

What an eyewash!! Obviously the initial announcement by Rohit of Rohit and Pal getting together was totally wrong and premature. Clearly the announcement was fanciful and Pal and Adwitiyaa had never joined him. And if they are on such good terms, why not have one common firm? I thought Rohit split from PXV because of a vision and business model difference and now there is another vision difference which leads to Pal breaking away! Clearly, one person is not able to sell his vision and business model effectively. Or is there some other reason?

All the best Arindam and Adwitiyaa. Hope your firm does exceedingly well.

These multiple break-ups confirm the long known fact that Bongs don't know how to run a business.

The main reason for this is greed. Just when the PXV was doing okay and earning some money that partners were greedy and wanted to corner more profits without working hard. This is the main reason for any business split.

Arindam says he has had Augustus for 3 months now. But in February LI ran the story about Arindam and Rohit re-starting RDA. There appears to be some inconsistency. How could Augustus be formed 3 months back, and LI run the story three months back that Rohit and ARindam have formed RDA?

From what I understand, the original intention in January / early February was for both to start up together but they then changed their mind.

http://www.legallyindia.com/201202032546/Law-firms/young-pxv-partnership-splits-over-vision-with-rohit-das-restarting-rda-legal

An timing of three months of Augustus Law would roughly fit within that, no?

Hi - we were following this up several weeks ago after a few tip-offs, but then we got caught up elsewhere, there were some delays, the story was a bit old already and we thought everyone knew about it anyway, so it dropped down the editorial agenda.

After the excited comments on yesterday's NUJS story, we were reminded that it still needed to be published...

Dudes give both Rohit and Arindam a break... from what i know, Arindam had separated from PXV way back in October last year and with the breakup of PXV, could not assimilate with the business plan of Rohit... One more thing which needs to be highlighted here is, though it may sound a little confusing (even i am confused at times) is who came before who... Is it not the case of RDA TO PXV TO RDA AND PXV??? From an outsiders perspective, it seems logical that the pple who came on board in 2011 could not fit into the culture of RDA (though name changed to PXV) and thus decided to split with the founding partner who in turn revived his old brand name RDA Legal... whether amicably or not is a speculative issue which need not be discussed in this forum... accepte that several partners in pxv who were preciously a part of the earlier rda also decided to stick to pxv... again the reasons need not be discussed in this foru... its their individual preferences!!!!

wish rohit, arindam, deepto, mohit, shobha, thomas, pingal, sauvik, anuj (beg ur pardon if i have missed out on any of the partners of these three firms) and the respective teams of these three firms (oh my god!!) all the very best for whatever they do... come what may, as an nujs alumni, i will feel proud to see all three going great guns!!!

If Arindam is looking for the right relationships to forge in Mumbai, clearly RDA is not the right one to forge with, since it is already in Mumbai. So why the talk of the possibility of a future alliance? And why is RDA referring work to Augustus in Kolkata when RDA has an existing office in Kolkata? Very strange statements.

PXV: Deepto: was a PA in AMSS - would have been made a partner this year. Wanted to do it on his own. Complete rockstar.

Mohit: Again a dude manifested by his topping the AOR exams but very lil corp law firm experience

Bobby: hrd good things bout him

Pingal: has matured greatly over the yrs.

Firmwise: best chance of surviving

RDA: Just Rohit: and believe me when i say it that just Rohit is enuf. He is a genius but needs to stay focused. A leader but obviously not able to convince ppl of his vision. If RDA and PXV had stayed together it could have become the NUJS version of Trilegal

Augustus:[...] u just do not wake up 1 day and open a firm.

Verus: Krishnayan- he is ok i guess but not exceptional like deepto or rohit

Ponky and Jay : the lesser said the better - its only a matter of time they realize working in a law firm is so much cushier and comes back

AND I AM NOT BEING BIASED TO MY FIRENDS. FELT THE NEED TO ADD THE DISCLAIMER.

The number of people who cannot "fit into the culture of RDA" seems to be growing quite fast. Even before the 2011 folks joined, there were a number of partners who left; samarpita, gandharbika, her husband whose name I cannot recall, bhargav and may be more. One can only speculate whether they left because they couldn't "fit into into the culture of RDA". And now with arindam and adwitiyaa, that is an alarming body count of at least 14 people in 3 years - definitely serial killer league! Since this is across 3 different firms (or versions of the same firm depending on how one would look at it) with only rohit as the common link, this is clearly an individual problem rather than an institutional one - although it is suggested that the problem is with the world at large. In any event, rohit's various takes on the events that transpired over these years need to be applauded - possible difference in culture with the pre-2011 chaps, "difference in vision" with the 2011 ones, and now "difference in business model" with arindam and adwitiyaa.

Anyway, one doesn't have to be nostradamus to predict an immediate partner promotion at RDA. Or a senseless lateral hire.

Guys Arindam and Adwitiya never joined RDA Legal at the first place after the split. It was wrongly reported both by legallyindia and bar and bench! Augustus was formed immediately after the PXV split! But yes they indeed have a best friend sort of relationship. They are still doing a lot of work together !!!! There are no differences at all between Rohit, Arindam and Adwitiya! And those of us who knows Rohit Das, we know he is a dynamic lawyer who can make miracles happen!!! Whats a "best friend sort of relationship"? This is the first time I have heard of two Indian firms within the same city referring work to each other and "doing a lot of work together"! Shouldnt they be competitors? This is a first in the Indian legal market and LI should consider doing a story on this new model of law firm management in India.

We reported the statement by Rohit Das at the time in the quote, that Arindam Pal would be joining him, which I understand was the intention.

In fairness, we should have also taken a comment from Arindam Pal at the time. However, I suspect that since the intention to merge was there at the time, we may have got a no comment or nothing enlightening at that time either.

Also, PXV did not clarify when we put this to them.

Yes, we regret the error, which could possibly have been avoided, although it may also reflect the fluid factual situation at the time.

Best wishes,

Are you saying LI and B&B made up the initial story that Arindam and Adwitiyaa will join RDA? Or that Rohit/Arindam/Adwitiyaa lied to the legal media? Please check the relevant reports from LI and B&B- both had quotes from Rohit and we'll have to assume that he made these statements as well. At the very least, this was never denied by Rohit even when it was, as you claim, incorrectly reported in articles in which he was quoted. Yet, you claim to know more than any of those actually involved!

Indeed, as per reported news in the legal circuit RDA Legal is doing truly unbelievable things since the split...Like splitting again!! Partners filing criminal complaints against each other is surely more fun than a barrel of monkeys. But your picking on "Noojie alums" shows where the actual prejudice lies. Try doing something on your own before commenting on others who have the courage to go against the tide, rather than commenting from your cramped cubicle in a law firm where you will undoubtedly be slaving till 2:00 a.m.

To sum up what has happened so far, one partner decided to leave a startup law firm that he had also founded. This bloke felt that a mere departure may go unnoticed. So he hastily linked his departure with that of another partner who had separately exited a while ago to portray is as an organizational split, difference in vision, etc., and get some media attention. The stunt definitely worked. Inclined to agree with the guys who claim Rohit is a genius. Though his credibility remains highly suspect considering the turn of events.

Ill advised or not there are so many NUJS entrepreneurs. NUJS does have something in its water. How come there are so many NUJS start ups? Not just law firms, but other initiatives, for e.g. LPOs, initiatives like IDIA, lawoctopus etc. Frankly, there are not so many from other law schools, especially post 2005. This is an interesting trend and would necessarily have to do with the culture at NUJS, either driven by students or their faculty. Anyone caring on sharing their thoughts on this - without getting vitriolic?

Not to mention CLAThacker. NLS of course also had this trend - but it was pre 2005 - Trilegal, Rainmaker being good examples.
Beer Facts 18 May 2012, 17:27

I dont think it had to do anything with NUJS really. Its the trend of the times. And mostly because you get to read about all this in LI. Other law schools, (NLS, Amity, ILS I'm sure the other law schools as well but I dont know) have probably produced equal number of interesting ventures and continue to produce (and not only Law related). Education, Inclusive Growth development, media consultancy, sports consultancy and such like. These are all recent but not necessarily stories that get picked up by LI. Not to forget our own Oxford boy Kian here which is why we know of most of this to begin with. Pre Trilegal is a very narrow way of looking at it. Even now non NUJS young entrepreneurs continue to start law firms, albeit at various stages of experience (as I keep reading on LI). As a matter of fact NUJS is probably the most conservative in producing non law related initiatives. RDA, PXV Verus and now Arindam's Augustus are slightly more LI savvy...:)

No matter how great the fascination with starting law firms may be, sticking to a big law firm, working for 10 years, making a name as a partner and THEN leaving makes far more sense than leaving as an Associate/SA/PA. Trilegal's example is frequently given, but that was a different age of competitiveness - now things are different. If Deepto had stuck on for another 3 years for example, he could have walked out with his own clients and associates. Now his practice is just a blip in the market. Same for Shobha, Bobby, Mohit and the rest. Also heard Shobha's left RDA...true?

But who do they need to prove anything to? You? Who are you to decide what someone would do/ not do in their careers?

this is such silly news and LI risks being seen more as a tabloid than a credible source of profession news if it keeps reporting such nonsense. I've been following the articles for the last few months and am dismayed to see such an unhealthy focus on what ppl from the NLUs (nlsN nalsar and nujs specifically) are doing.

There are many lawyers, some old some young who set up their practices and firms. None of that is reported and righfully so. If a well known partner from a prominent firm set up his own shop its perhaps worth a story. But why give so much attention to a nobody like arindam??
to start or not to start! 19 May 2012, 05:02

It's not a law school issue. If one were to analyse the essential dilemma between continuing as a SA or starting up on your own--it is whether that lawyer, besides being very competent, also has rainmaking abilities or potential for that. Today there are many competent SAs or PAs in established firms who manage and handle clients very well--but they are mostly maintianing client relationships handed down by their partners or managing partners. How many of them command their own clients? Infact many salaried partners of big firms are often used by the managing partner(s) to park some of their important client relationships and there is nothing wrong in that. Keeping big clients happy require competence, but some of the people starting up might not want to be at the mercy of a Shroff or a Modi till they find their own ground. They might want to start out early and then build their own clientele and goodwill. Now I am not sure which one gives a greater kick/fulfillment-having your own clients, albeit much smaller, or managing big clients, but who are essentially handed down to you. I guess it depends on the person concerned. PXV,RDA,Verus, Alliance Legal are firms comprising of very capable lawyers, who would have surely become partners in their respective firms had they continued. Deepto-Bobby-Mohit-Pingal (of PXV), Krish-Dipankar-Jay-Rishad(of Verus), Vishnu-Ravi-Priyanka-Shameek (of Alliance), Rohit (of RDA) are, for people who know them, very capable and serious lawyers and they must have done this analysis themselves.

theres just no comparison between these examples. Vishnu and priyanka were both partners at prominent law firms. Their strarting a new firm deserves attention. the others are just degree holders of no repute.

@ zhou- What about Ravi then? Is he also a "degree holder of no repute" because he was not a partner at a prominent law firm?

That's being a little nit-picky! I think what Zhou was trying to say is that Alliance has been set up by people at the apt level of maturity.

@ zhou - by your logic had "degree holders of no repute" been made partners at their respective previous law firms this year (and trust me Ravi, Deepto, Dipankar etc. would've made the cut), your view of their new firms would've changed.

So if they start a new firm on 31 Mar their firms are useless and they are "degree holders of no repute" but if they'd taken that step the following day (when their respective partnerships would've been effective), they would become worthy of comparison with Vishnu & Priyanka.
zhou 21 May 2012, 15:21

Regrettably that's true. The fact is that all those you name never did make it to partner at well known firms. Whether they might have or not is speculation and I am not concerned with speculation. The fact is that vishnu, etc. did achieve a reputation if only by staying till they became partner. Whether or not that reputation is deserved is an entirely diff matter and you are welcome to debate it. There are plenty of might-haves in life.

Go and ask anyone in their previous firms - your doubts re "speculation" will be laid to rest. Carry out some due diligence before commenting, my boy.

zhou - the partnership track of amss is 7-8 yrs.I think its a bit stupid for you to say that if you are a senior associate or principal associate (thereby indicating that you are on track to partnership and which means you are already 6-7 yrs in practice)then you are not matured enuf to start on your own; but the moment you cross the magical date of 31 March when you are made a 'partner'; you suddenly become worthy to start a firm. Grow up man! Totally agree with #26; that the dynamics and factors of starting a firm are different. Vishnu, Priyanka are a few years senior to Deepto, Dipankar, Mohit etc and the fact they had "ex-partner" tags would obviously help them get more work. But that doesn't mean that the others, just becasue they didnt wait to become partners, are all hopeless. That's unfair and downright absurd.
zhou 22 May 2012, 11:00

No need to be uncivil. Your language suggests that these ppl were pretty much assured of being partners by march 31. There's no way to verify that unless uncle cyril makes a press statement. I do not say they are hopeless, just that like many many other lawyers there is nothing special about their starting a law firm that is so newsworthy. Judging by LI's reporting of late any associate with an NLU background gets coverage for just about anything. This entire rda/pxv/augustus story only proves how terribly immature the promoters are. And yet LI goes on and on and on. But deepto and co are not the only non-partners setting up shop. Why don't we hear anything about the rest?

Hey Zhou,

Somebody made a comment about established firms like Fox Mandal and Little, or S&R and Pathak, ALMT and Clasis, Or Trilegal and Phoenix splitting as well. Are their promoters immature as well?

@zhou : So everyone who is not made a partner is a useless according to you... ??? is that what you saying ?

and what exactly do you mean by "I do not say they are hopeless, just that like many many other lawyers there is nothing special about their starting a law firm that is so newsworthy. "

Why don't you try and set up one, get clientele, work your pants brown in getting a reputation and also sacrifice life and family to infuse money in the venture ?

If you succeed, do come back and give your considered opinion. Else, be wise, and keep your thoughts to yourself.

Also, there is nothing wrong with LI reporting of NLUs. It's just that people there imbibe something from the water they drink.. believe its called zeal, inspiration and motivation to do big on a self sustaining individual level

Further, your comment on pxv/rda/augustus in the next line shows how clearly warped your thought process is.. there are many things which happen when an organization is born..some good, some bad.. people then move on and fry other fishes...which turn out also to be either edible or not...
there is nothing called immaturity in the process... its called (to use a slightly crass term "balls") and the ability to pick up and start afresh is called "spunk"

may I suggest a good dictionary where you can look up the above terms ... an oxford concise should help !!
cheers..

@ zhou: dude, you seem to have come to the bizarre conclusion that if a firm splits--that means the promoters are "immature". Besides the big firms firms that chou @ 27.1 has mentioned; there are even bigger splits that have happened like AZB-Clifford Chance, AZB-Aoop Shah, AMSS-Bharucha, Dua-Tatwa, PKA-Viddhi. So when big daddies split-- you will call them strategic, visionary and what not; but smaller firms or startups split you will brand them immature. Merely becasue Kian covers 10 startups and not 100 startup stories; doesn't make the ten stories that he covers unworthy. Naysayers like you need counselling--go get some help bro!

True. These are much bigger splits. Guess zhou's generalisations actually reflect his own frustration - the fact that he didnt have the guts to do something on his own.

Friends, you're forgetting that in case of AZB, AMSS, Trilgal, PKA, etc., they have not had messy splits in just a matter of few months like in case of RDA, PXV, Augustus and what not
BS 22 May 2012, 18:02

AMSS - Bharucha was quite messy! Just not reported. So was P&A, S&R. Fox and Little was not messy - are you kidding me! the partners filed criminal complaints against each other. Dua Tatwa was tremendously messy. OR SRGR and Fox?

And what has given you the impression that any of these splits amongst the younger firms was messy? None of the Partners of these smaller firms have sued each other! In fact, whatever is reported in LI indicates that the splits have been handled amicably. Just cause you didnt read about the splits or the gory details of these other bigger law firm feuds on LI doesnt mean it didnt happen. Grow up!

@ anon:

AZB-Anoop Shah and AZB-Clifford Chance split : The two alliances lasted less than 18 months and termed each other from best friends to good friends to what not.

AMSS-Bharucha split: Was one of the messiest (ask the insiders of the flurry of open email exchanges between the two fractions)

Trilegal-Phoenix split: Well, everyone knows how it rocked the boat at the time when Sawant & Co. walked off.

Dua-Tatwa split: It was nothing short of a mutiny where all but one partner walked away from a 50+ office. It was a coup.

Fox-Little: The messisest of the lot. They filed FIRs and court proceedings against each others.

So, lets not have any illusions here.

(Agree, however, that PXV-RDA-Augustus split was quite funny especially the way the news came in.)

all splits have been messy and true as mentioned above, the only thing that has not happened in some of the case is an open fistfight on the road..

that may have happened under covers, but is not great public knowledge..

rda / pxv split that ways has been very mature considering the circumstances.. so to needlessly shoot off one's mouth (@zhow how howw ?) is not right and is further uncalled for..

come to think of it, everytime these followup comments hit the mailbox makes me very irritated at people like zhow...
