New crop of SAM partners
New crop of SAM partners

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas has promoted 7 to its partnership (including one as a partner-equivalent director in competition).

There are only promotions in Delhi, according to its press release, with corporate seeing three promotions while the competition team had two senior additions from the ranks.

It is understood that no other internal promotions at any of the firm’s other offices are expected.

Three of the new partners are graduates of SLS Pune, with one each from ILS Pune, NLSIU Bangalore, and Amity Law School.

Last year the firm had promoted eight to partnership (out of whom three were based in Mumbai).

The promotions take effect from 1 April, and increase the Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas’ partner headcount to 117, of whom 43 are women. The firm has 552 fee-earners in total (including partners), of whom 275 are women.

List of new partners

General Corporate

  • Ananda Malhotra (SLS Pune, 2008; Delhi)
  • Sumeet Singh (SLS Pune, 2009; Delhi)
  • Karun Prakash (ILS Pune, 2009; Delhi)

Delhi managing partner Pallavi Shroff commented in the release: “We are proud of their accomplishments as they have made significant contributions to the firm. I am confident that our new partners will play an important role in the future growth of the Firm. I wish immense success to our new partners in this exciting phase of their careers.”

Mumbai managing partner Akshay Chudasama and chairman Shardul Shroff echoed those sentiments in the release, with Chudasama adding that the promotions would “underline our commitment to enhance the rich pool of our talent as each of them has proven credentials as a go-to advisor for clients”.

To be updated.

Director is not a Partner. Rohan is not even Indian qualified! How does he as a foreign lawyer appear before the CCI and Indian courts?

Have you ever heard of Paku Khan, my friend?

Paku was a well known partner in Ireland before moving to India - has about 30 years of international work experience like John Handoll - the other Irish partner SAM has hired. Rohan has not worked overseas and is not qualified in India. For a regulatory practice Isn’t this a bar council violation if he appears in court? Equivalent to any other UK/US qualified lawyer appearing before the CCI, NCLAT and Supreme Court?

Wait, so the bar council violation goes away if someone is "well known" in another country?

I'm sure the actual workaround is that anyone who isn't qualified doesn't appear in court - so this doesn't seem like that big an issue

Again the same question, how much these partners will be earning.
50 to 75 Cr
75 to 1 Cr
Above 1 Cr.

So they must be getting Business of at least 2 Cr. 3X of their take home???

Yes, 99% sure that's the idea - but can't say 100% sure , don't know how it works at retained partner level. Also, believe its 2.75x at SAM?

And, its "billing", not "getting".

Most of them have 10 years of PQE, and with 10 PQE anyone with an Indian law firm earns more than 1 Cr.
Haha 11 May 2019, 13:39

Sorry to burst your bubble, law student, but that's not how it works. 10 years PQE if you're actually good at what you do at a top tier law firm will get you 1 cr. But not "anyone" at "an Indian law firm"

These guys will probably be earning 1cr next year, especially with the 200% bonus model at SAM - some of them may even have earned 1cr last year.

Of 6 partners - 3 from Symbi, 1 from ILS, 1 from Amity and 1 from NLS. What happened to Amarchand retaining the Creme de la Creme of legal talent from the top universities ?

Sorry, I didn't comprehend your comment fully. What is a 200% bonus model?

Some of them may have earned 1 cr last year? Seriously, is that possible?

Also, what about 10 PQE at Tier 1 Law firm? How much does one earn on an average?
@LawStud -PunIntended 13 May 2019, 08:40

100% bonus is SAM matlab:
A - 20% of annual (fixed) salary
SA - 30% of annual (fixed) salary
PA - 40% of annual (fixed) salary
Salaried Partner - 50% of annual (fixed) salary

Baki ganit khud laga lo.

Bhai tera assumption jo hai law-firm salaries ka, wo bhot cute hai. Which is fine, mene bhi aise hi sapne dekhe the clg me.

Can give you a lot of nuggets (mostly useless). Just take home one thing, mehnat karega to 1 nai 10 cr banaega - papa ka naam roshan karega. All the best & enjoy whatever is still left of your clg life!! :)
