Shardul Amarchand promotes 10 to salaried partner in later, smaller round

With several months delay, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM) has announced its annual partnership promotions.

A total of 10 principal associates got the nod to salaried partner, growing the firm’s total partnership size to 125.

In September 2020, the firm had promoted 85 associates up the rank - a larger number than the previous year - suggesting a smaller partnership promotion this time around.

Indeed, there was speculation that SAM would not announce any partnership promotions at all in the pandemic year, that potentially remains economically cataclysmic.

However, the partnership promotions this year are indeed smaller: in the previous round in October 2019, 10 were promoted to equity partner and only two to salaried partner.

New SAM partners Maker, Menon, Saha, Pandey, Khan, Mirza, Mahapatra, Sinha, Lala, Panda (l. to r., from top)
New SAM partners Maker, Menon, Saha, Pandey, Khan, Mirza, Mahapatra, Sinha, Lala, Panda (l. to r., from top)

  • Abhinav Maker, Capital Markets, Delhi
  • Anjali Menon, General Corporate and Private Equity, Mumbai
  • Aparupa Saha, General Corporate, Mumbai
  • Devesh Pandey, General Corporate, Delhi
  • Faraz Khan, General Corporate, Mumbai
  • Gauhar Mirza, Dispute Resolution, Delhi
  • Kirti Mahapatra, General Corporate, Delhi
  • Kushal Sinha, Projects & Project Finance, Delhi
  • Prateek Lala, General Corporate, Bengaluru
  • Saurav Panda, Insolvency & Bankruptcy, Delhi

Three of the promotees are based in Mumbai while six are in the Delhi office; Bengaluru saw one new partner.

The corporate teams provided the largest contingent of new partners, at six, followed by one each in capital markets, disputes, projects and insolvency.

SAM rival Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas had announced its Covid-year promotions more or less on schedule, in July 2020, also with a round of 10 new partners, which was half as many as it had been the previous year.

The SAM press release quotes made no mention of Covid, the delay or any economic issues but emphasised quality, suggesting that the process was perhaps more competitive this year than usual.

SAM executive chairman Shardul Shroff commented: “We are thrilled to announce promotions of our highly talented lawyers to Partnership. The promotions reflect a rigorous internal process and are based on a track record of high quality performance made by these lawyers to the firm. They are extremely valuable members of our team and we are proud of each one of them. As they rise to the next stage of their career trajectories, we have every faith that they will continue to excel.”

Delhi-based managing partner Pallavi Shroff said: “It is always our goal to recognize and support the exceptional talent in the firm. I congratulate all those who have been promoted and wish them much success as they take on their new roles. We take immense pride in the high quality talent our Firm possesses. Everyone who has been part of these promotions have provided tremendous value to the Firm’s growth and I am confident of their continuing contributions in the future as well.”

Akshay Chudasama, Managing Partner, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas said, We are pleased to recognize their hard work and commitment. We look forward to their constant contribution to the success of the firm as we continue to build on our value-based and performance-driven approach in this new year. Their success is a testament of their hard work and the high-quality work that they have done and delivered to our clients.”

What's the law school-wise breakup? It seems most are non-NLUs?

3 girls and 7 boys. Sam has been trying hard to maintain gender diversity.

Congrats to all boys for making it through.

I agree, but it's a helpful metric nonetheless, the upper echelons at some of these legacy firms are inundated with an NLU cabal that can be hard to disperse. An increasingly diverse background for new partners can be indicative of a change in the tides.

Not surprised how new salaried partners are made to believe in the bigger firms that they are actually partners and they are being brought into the 'partnership'. Sad truth is that everybody knows that they are just better paid principal associates/counsels. Kian don't block this comment.

Does anybody pretend otherwise? Non-equity partnership at any law firm, especially the Big 6/7 is just a pay hike with no other perks. Most continue reporting to the same boss even.

Say all you want, but how many do you know who had rejected the partnership offer at SAM? Not many, right?

Indian law firm industry was a new born infant 15 years ago. Partners were few and responsibilities were humongous. Now things are way more structured. There is nothing wrong in a senior partner-junior partner construct and in taking up more execution lead as a junior partner. Let’s be honest, as the law firm industry grows, layered structures are bound to happen. That’s how every service industry works. Look at the consultants and see the number of VPs and you will know.

Spot on. The bigger the firm the more devalued these 'salaried partner' positions are. No clients, no leadership skills, years spent clutching a laptop and shuffling around to make track changes in real time, these lads and lasses are just SAs with a fancy tag. From a firm perspective its a smart move since it costs nothing to change designations and satisfies the need for recognition these chaps have. Within the firm they continue to do the same execution roles. Reminds me of how the janitor in my US law school was given the job title of Facilities and Maintenance executive.

Here is the full law-school wise breakup and analysis. You're welcome.

1. Abhinav Maker: GNLU
2. Aparupa Saha: NLUJ
3. Anjali Menon: NALSAR
4. Devesh Pandey: DU
5. Faraz Khan: Symbiosis
6. Gauhar Mirza: Jamia
7. Kirti Mahapatra: NALSAR + Oxford
8. Prateek Lala: CMR University Law School (what's that??)
9. Saurav Panda: Symbiosis
10. Kushal Sinha: GNLU

Thus, NALSAR, GNLU and Symbi top with 2 each, followed by DU, Jamia, NLUJ and CMR University.

[...] Gauhar's CV LInkedIN bio says that he ranked first in Jamia. Thus, there is still hope for someone in a traditional university if he can rank within the top 3. As for Symbi, there are a few every year who need up with good jobs: some because of contacts, some because of good academic performance (but you would need a top 3 rank). [...]

Yes, TLC means traditional law college. TLC alumni lawyers are not enemies but friends and valued colleagues. However, I am sorry to say that TLC alumni faculty and admin are mostly enemies. They have formed a cabal and have been hostile to NLU alumni faculty/prospective faculty.
Guest 14 Jan 2021, 05:26

Why "facts contested"? Does the moderator deny that Rao, Bhat, Vir Singh, Bimal Patel, Dukhpal etc (among former VCs) were resistant to NLU alumni being hired, and Lizzie (among current VCs) openly opposed Sudhir's appointment?
Guest 14 Jan 2021, 05:59
+2 -0
Rao didn't hire anyone on a permanent post during his tenure, though several NLU alumni taught contractually during his term. Bhat appointed 2 NLU alumni on full time positions, and 2 more contractually during his term out of 12 people hired. At least get your facts straight. Not that I like either of them as VCs. Lizzie didn't have a problem against NLU alumni, just against Sudhir as VC (given his subsequent antics, one might argue that it wasn't lacking in merit either). There's no data to show that NLU alumni with proper qualifications regularly apply at NLUs for teaching and are overlooked in favour of similarly placed non-NLU alumni. Only anecdotal evidence and that's really not enough to merit a broad conclusion. Even MP Singh, RS and Faizan are from TLC background. They have hired plenty of NLU alumni during their time.

Depends on your vision child. A fresher in a law firm in 2010 could have save a lakh and invested in bitcoin with enough now to retire. A litigating lawyer would have saved a lakh only around 2016 and may have wanted to blow it in luxuries she could not afford before.

Yet, there still remains no word on increments. While most of the big firms have both rolled back pay cuts, announced promotions and increments, SAM is yet to confirm increments. The newly minted SA's, PAs and Partners continue to work on salaries that are a grade lower.

Legally India is a site which totally caters to the Indian economic right. The site has been a champion of FDI, free market economics and neo liberal reforms. It largely caters to new business houses (law firms) which have gained prominence only in the past twenty odd years. Such a site would have had no significance in the first 50 years since independence.

The numbers given over here are plain ridiculous. Most Tier 1's pay their SAs between 67-80 lakhs. So the partners here are definitely making a crore and upwards of that.
