Shardul Amarchand grows to 109 partners after latest promos

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas has promoted 8 of its lawyers to partner, growing it to a total of 109 partners, according to its press release.

The firm has promoted the following:

General Corporate

  • Ambarish (Mumbai)
  • Anirban Bhattacharya (Mumbai)
  • Apurva Rai (Delhi) (who had joined the firm in the last month from Sequoia Capital as a principal associate)
  • Arka Banerjee (Mumbai)
  • Nikhil Sachdeva (Gurugram)
  • Sadia Khan (Delhi)

Dispute Resolution

  • Surjendu Sankar Das (Delhi)

Projects & Project Finance

  • Prashant Sirohi (Delhi)

Executive chairman Shardul Shroff commented in a press release that “this year has seen our firm further cement its position as a leading provider of legal solutions to top global and domestic corporations”.

Managing partner Pallavi Shroff added: “This round of elevations is a recognition of our young and talented achievers in the rapid growth of the firm across practice areas and geographies.”

Managing partner Akshay Chudasama noted: “Following these partner inductions, the Firm’s Mumbai office now has 37 Partners and 189 fee earners, across practices. I am confident that the new partners will continue to enhance the Firm’s reputation with their hard work and intellectual prowess.”

As we had reported last week, rival Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) has has 164 fee-earners and 32 partners in its Delhi office, which had been established roughly the same time as SAM’s following the break-up of Amarchand Mangaldas. Partnership promotions at CAM are likely by August.

On 18 June we had reported that SAM promoted 20 to principal associate and 39 to senior associate.

How are Nivedita and Apurva Rai "our young and talented achievers". Are they not lateral hires - at least their Linkedin profiles suggests so.

Ambarish, Anirban and Sadia are very solid.
Glad SAM isn’t making partners for the sake of it!

Comparison between Mumbai offices of SAM and Delhi office of CAM is like comparing Mumbai and Delhi offices of AZB or Khaitan! One is miles ahead of the other, an no prizes for guessing which one is leading!

Boss do you know how much 7 corporate partners in Delhi office of KCO make? You have no Idea so do not talk shit. AZB is one man show whereas in KCO Delhi corporate Partnership, every partner has the potential to set mini AZB.

Yes, khansaheb surely does rock. Without his blessings, none of the three would have made to SAMCO partnership so soon. I say this considering that they are not home grown and have come from tier-3 firms - not to comment on their ability but practically it is something which matters in SAMCO. Also, a very clear undertone to all this is that be it any firm (BMR Legal, Desai or SAM) what matters is what you get to the table. Khansaheb will surely be in the MC soon. GS's position is weakening and she should be worrying - first Jatin, then RM now AK - all 3 partners with their own books.

Kian - Isnt it incorrect to mention the lateral hirings as promotions here? Apurva has been working for a leading Fund for over 2 years now.
kianganz 27 Jun 2018, 07:32

Yes, you're right that it should be mentioned separately if that's accurate. Has Apurva Rai just joined from Sequoia? It could be she joined a month or 2 ago and that she was now promoted to partner?
Guest 27 Jun 2018, 08:03

Kian, Apurva is a boy, not a girl. And yes SAM intentionally made him join on June 10 as a counsel and have now promoted him together with others. He is a lateral hire given that he was in Sequoia for couple of years. Not sure why SAM needs to make it look like a internal promotion.

It is worth doing a piece on attrition rate in in-house roles. FOR e.g., Sequoia. The number of counsel joining and leaving this place is quite a bit for an in-house role and given that Sequoia is 3-4 member legal team. Tanmay to Arjun Rajgopal to Apurva have left in last couple of years.
Rai lover 27 Jun 2018, 18:18

Kian Apurva joined on June 11. He was working with Gunjan before he went to sequoia.
Alto 28 Jun 2018, 12:22

But Apurva started with AMSS in 2008. Took a sabbatical in the middle for a few months and came back. He joined Sequioa two years ago. But only after having worked in AMSS (Delhi) and SAM for over eight years. He is as home-grown as it gets.

Also yes, Apurva is a brilliant lawyer. Watch out for him - he will shine a lot in future.

Shruti and Arjun ([...]) are Apurva's batch mates and they were promoted last year or last to last year (in September or October) but Apurva was not. He joined SAM in June again, with service continuity benefits, and declared as a partner. [...]

Kian, I thought in house counsel had to surrender their bar council registration before becoming an employee. Assuming this boy also did the same can he be inducted as a partner before such licence is re-issued?
