Agrawal to head out of SAM
Agrawal to head out of SAM

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM) long-time partner Akila Agrawal has resigned from the firm, according to authoritative sources.

Agrawal, a 1999 NLSIU Bangalore graduate, had joined SAM in 2002, becoming partner in 2008, and equity partner in 2011.

She specialises mostly in M&A and general corporate work, and particularly in transactions related to listed companies.

She was not reachable for comment.

We have reached out to SAM for comment.

One should understand that after working for so long in one place it is but natural for people to get bored of each other. Especially when it’s the case that no matter what you do you would never be a “blood” partner. I heard she ran a very successful and professional practice which made the firm a lot of money. But a person wants his/her due. When that’s not given then time to move on. She should go to a smaller firm now and rock it there rather than go to another big shop where many people are already sitting..

The market is getting really exciting. The talk is CAM is hiring her, but question is will she also stay for a couple of years and leave. Will Cyril ask her to contribute to equity and treat her worse of than the people in Mumbai and create circumstances where there will be more bitterness in the Delhi Office. Whatever will become of the MNK folks in CAM Delhi- they are quite senior. Then there are several random people who operate like many small firms under the CAM banner. Heard SAM is doing better and been able to retain folks. CAM is struggling- Nirav Modi, CBI, partners leaving at all points of the year.... Cyril-bhai what's really happening, Rishab- [...], what are you doing? Will you ever lead or will it be a non-Shroff as your CS has mentioned.

In part that may also be because when Ashwath left, the Shroff vs Shroff battle was much hotter than it is now, with partner moves nearly every week between the two firms and other firms picking off partners or getting partners picked off...

If I remember correctly, Ashwath's story (which included exits of other partners working with him) was updated very shortly with the fact that he was joining AZB and that invited even more comments.

May be she is not same league as Ashwath (if that is something that can be determined based on comments here), I hope you are not trying to imply that she is same league as Klaw partners who are leaving.

Lastly, please note some of the last few comments even in Klaw story are about her.

SAM has already filled Akila's absence as the inside news is that SAM has already finalised a very senior and reputed lawyer as equity partner in Delhi office who will be joining with own team and books. Didn't expect that SAM will so quickly find a strong replacement and as per the talks within SAM, a senior partner is joining Delhi office with his/her own team and will be heading M&A. There's a bigger news stored in for all of us than Akila's exit.
Guest 27 Apr 2018, 10:52

It's a business for partners and senior partners to move from one firm to another especially when a firm is a family oriented firm and one can't rise beyond a certain level. AZB and Khaitan are more structured that way. But certainly SAM still remains SAM which is the most known and popular overseas as compared to any other law firm in India. Even SAM had taken away the star partners from.other tier-1 firms. It's all business.
Legally-mad 27 Apr 2018, 11:14

Why so much secrecy about it...definitely has to be someone who has either stronger or at least as strong books as Akila and certainly the experience otherwise her exit is a big blow to SAM.

Who cares man, this is an evergreen process in the legal market. One partner will come and another will go. Junior lawyers will keep slogging for some or the other partner. Have heardhear she's moved out with a few lawyers from her team and the remaining ones are completing their fate with the new partner.
Cactus 27 Apr 2018, 11:36

So many contemplations - Who knows the truth. But SAM will have to fill her space. Will they take a partner from AZB. CAM must be dreading the loss of another partner if taken by SAM. The remaining partners in SAM will have a good time as SAM cannot afford loss of another senior partner in near future.
Lol 27 Apr 2018, 11:40

All big firms must be trying to retain their senior partners so that they don't lose them to SAM now. Her exit is certainly a good news for other senior partners;) & more than her exit, the wait is to watch who will be replacing her in SAM!!!!

SAM corp team needs a leader with more independent exposure and experience. They hardly have anyone other than the ones born and brought up there with no independence and little exposure outside the world of SAM. Seems it a family store with two-three munshis assisting the family.

That's true. Presently SAM Delhi doesn't have senior partners who have exposure of having worked with different teams and set of people. Major clients given to them are from Shroffs and their style of working is confined to SAM.

Will be surprised that such a senior lawyer who has been independent for so long will be joining SAM. Won't be surpised though that SAM would want to take her considering her reputation and experience will flow in. They would want to fill in the gap between other equity partners who are comparatively young and the mains.

What most people do not know is that Gopika Pant was a partner with erstwhile AMSS in the late 90s before quitting and starting her own firm so the move may not be surprising although I wonder how their best friend Ashurst will feel about this.

It will be great if young lawyers are trained under such experienced and senior partners. Good move for both.

Yes, provided this news is true. People trained under her are doing pretty good and she can train more lawyers. And the lawyers in her firm will get larger platform at SAM.

Six month gardening. AA is growing flowers while awaiting her shorter commute to Saket. Okhla will soon be a thing of the past.

After so much of hungama, complete silence. Is SAM not able to rope in other big names in Delhi after what happened with Akila? Certainly a big blow to SAM.
