Trilegal hits back at CAM, poaches white collar crime partner Kunal Gupta

Kunal Gupta joins Trilegal

Trilegal has hired Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) partner Kunal Gupta as a partner in white-collar crime investigations in Delhi.

Trilegal partner Nishant Parikh commented in a press release: “Kunal is one of the leading forensics and investigations lawyers in the country with significant global experience. Kunal’s experience will further bolster the firm’s white-collar crime investigations practice.”

He had joined CAM in 2016 (not without controversy: his former employer Grant Thornton had threatened to sue him over joining for breach of contract; Gupta strongly denied this and the kerfuffle eventually went nowhere).

Gupta works on white collar crime issues including FCPA, UK Bribery Act and Indian Prevention of Corruption Act legislations.

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas managing partner Cyril Shroff said: “We wish him well.”

He is a 2004 NLSIU Bangalore graduate, who had previously also worked for a year at Luthra & Luthra (as it then was), the World Bank and PwC before moving to Grant Thornton in 2014.

Trilegal, which had initially been somewhat lateral-hire shy (at least at partnership levels), has been somewhat active there, with the hire of AZB & Partners partner Harsh Maggon in June (though it’s also lost a bunch of counsel and senior partner Ravindra Bandhakavi, who of course went to CAM).

From my personal experience, it is a superb team- holding expertise in white collar crime and investigations. They are top notch white collar crime lawyers in India, in fact the only ones. The team is internationally acclaimed for conducting global white collar investigations. They are highly recommended!

Ravi Bandhkavi is a massive loss for Trilegal. In terms of revenue, client and market credibility when in less than 5 years you lose your first big lateral. Kunal is a good lawyer but small hire in comparison to Ravi. What’s most interesting though is Trilegal is now a mini Amarchand alumni club with Nisha Uberoi, Ganesh Rao, Harsh Maggon, Aditya Jha, Kunal Gupta.

Every law firm hires another's. That's the standard practice. Same is with big 4s. In an industry, this happens. Does not mean you will be called a particular club partner.

When you don't get equity, you cross the parking lot to the other side where the grass has been painted to look green on top while the bottom bit is burnt away. What was he thinking.... Equity in two years???

Thanks LI. Never heard the name before but glad you told us that he is good. India needs some good investigations lawyer. Pray tell does he appear in proceedings which he investigated and argues or is he a more expensive version of the BDO s and FTI s

Never heard of him. If his practice was half way decent Cam would have given him equity. Cam did not. Law firms are about commercials.

Kunal is one of the top WCC Investigations lawyer. He has renowned for his expertise not inly in India but the entire of South Asia.

Whatever people say, its a win-win for trilegal.

I doubt whether he practices in Pak. So what other lucrative markets does he cover? Sri Lanka? Bhutan? Nepal? Or Maldives?

I seriously doubt you now. If a person is popular in a particular region, does it necessarily mean he works in those regions physically. Have you ever heard of association with reputed firms or lawyers or referring local matters by foreign law firms or clients for matters in India? Common sense is a lot more uncommon these days!

White collar is coming up as a very niche practice area in law firms. Firms are desperately trying to get experienced professionals onboard to run their show. Its a bingo for Tri as they got a good investigations lawyer at the right time when industry is bellied up with banking frauds and regulatory investigations. All the best!

If only CAM wasn’t a miser and paid people well. Giving bonus at March end, announcing promotions in May and then releasing arrears in October. Heard they haven’t even increased the salaries for associates since 2015!
