Bangalore-headquartered firm Narasappa, Doraswamy & Raja (NDR) has absorbed the three-month-old Mumbai start-up of former AZB & Partners partner Vineetha MG, to create a newly rebranded merged firm called Samvād Partners.

According to a press release from NDR, the firm will have three partners in Bangalore - Harish Narasappa, Siddharth Raja and Poornima Hatti (who heads the dispute resolution practice) – while Vineetha MG, a corporate and finance lawyer, will continue to be based in Mumbai.

MG commented in the release that the firms shared synergies, values and complementary practice areas, and added: “A larger set up (comprising approximately 25 lawyers) and our combined faculties and areas of expertise will also give us the platform to ensure a seamless service to clients across India and overseas.”

Narasappa noted in the statement: “The new office in Mumbai, and increased capacity in New Delhi and Chennai, will give us a nationwide team. It will also provide new challenges to our lawyers.”

The new branding of the firm – Samvād – is derived from the Sanskrit words for Sama (equal) and Vād (to speak), therefore implying dialogue, discussion and communication.

In February, NDR had recruited Rohan G George as a partner to head up its intellectual property (IP) practice in Chennai.

The firm also has an office in Delhi. The merger will take effect on 1 April 2013.

I think we are seeing a trend here, a lot of consolidation in the small firm sector where the more aggressive small firms (Poovaiyah, Indus, NDR) will start picking up Biglaw partners/ associates who wanted to start off on their own. I guess its a balance between a more egalitarian partnership model and eschewing some of the risks of starting on one's own.

Are we to understand that Start ups are still struggling?

This trend is good for sector, as the dogma that firms are only two types either biggies or smallies is erasing, now this leads to averaging ... Now a new concept of middle level firms which are more competitive qualitatively and quantitatively, it is a good omen ...

samvad has a nicer ring to it than yet another heap of forgettable acronyms. soon we will exhaust all permutations and combinations of alphabets. how about xxx for the next start-up which wants the contemporary acronym vibe?

When a firm gives up its name and merges to come up with a new one only means it could not create a brand for itself. This is not to criticize the lawyers who are talented no doubt. But, here the emphasis is more on the creation of a brand which takes years to build and then one fine day it is called off for a new one. This generally happens out of compulsion and not out of choice.

All the very best Samvad. From the looks of it, you guys will do really well for yourselves.

Kian, where is their office situated? Did NDR already have a Bomaby office?
