Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi partner Vijayendra Pratap (VP) Singh will relocate to Mumbai this month to ramp up the firm’s disputes practice in the city.
Singh said: “I will be joining the Mumbai office. The move will add to the disputes capability, in particular arbitration, at Mumbai.
“I have had extensive experience in the area, including through acting for the Singapore International Arbitration Center in its intervention in the BALCO case.”
He specialises in corporate and commercial litigation and arbitration, in regulations relating to trade, foreign exchange and the power sector, as well as in disputes relating to tax and shareholders.
Singh is a 2001 graduate of NLSIU Bangalore and became a partner at Amarchand Delhi in 2008.
“It will be a strong addition to our arbitration practice in Mumbai,” commented Amarchand Mumbai managing partner Cyril Shroff about Singh’s move. Amarchand Delhi senior partners and a spokesperson did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Litigation is very location specific - How does it make any sense to move a partner who's put in 10 years building a practice and relationships in Delhi? VP was active in the courts in Delhi, and actually had face value in some tribunals. Unlike most AM partners VPS has a reputation for appearing himself and arguing for clients. He won't be able to do that in Bombay for a while - esp. with the solicitor/barrister system...
Also, Bombay litigation is an old boys club from what I hear, and it's a very old court with its own procedures and specificities - Why would you ask someone to get to figure that out so late in their career?
VPS is apparently something of a golden boy at AM Delhi. What went wrong? Somebody shed some light, please...
PS - The barrister/ solicitor system concern is nonsense. There is a solicitor's society but no special privileges for them as far as appearing in court is concerned.

In short, partner moves between Amarchand offices, which run as semi-independent entities under separate managing partners in Delhi and Mumbai, are rare, though not unheard of. In any case, we have not yet reported any in India.
For law firms, in India as well as abroad, deciding to permanently relocate a partner between two offices is not a decision taken lightly or without strategy repercussions (hopefully), and sometimes it even comes with rewards or other incentives, and is therefore worth writing about.
In this case, it could either mean that Mumbai and Delhi offices - which are intended to cooperate more closely under the "Amarchand 3.0" management revamp - are working together more closely, or, in the absence of any evidence of that, it could mean that they are not.
