Sayak Maity to join W&C Singapore

White & Case has continued expanding its India practice after the joining of Clifford Chance Singapore’s Rahul Guptan, with AZB & Partners Mumbai-based partner Sayak Maity to join.

Update 12:06: We have confirmed he will be joining White & Case as a partner.

Bar & Bench first reported Maity’s expected move to Singapore today, which had been rumoured for a while.

Maity, a 2011 NUJS Kolkata graduate who specialises in corporate, M&A and private equity work, had been promoted to partner in 2019.

He had in 2018 moved from Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas to Tata Sons.

We have reached out to AZB for comment.

AZB Mumbai managing partner Zia Mody commented: “It’s a great opportunity for Sayak and we wish him all the very best and know that he will do us proud.”

Wishing Sayak all the very best. Sweet, humble and a fantastic lawyer.

It looks so stupid to mention (and in the headline at that, and about a 2011 graduate to boot) where someone went to law school. A decade later, what difference does it even make?

It's a matter of pride for the institution I'm sure.
And what's the harm?

It looks moronic. Because it is moronic.

Imagine if Kian had written: "GLC graduate, and AZB Mumbai managing partner Zia Mody commented: “It’s a great opportunity for Sayak and we wish him all the very best and know that he will do us proud.”"

If she did actually attend Cambridge the least she’d know was that the BA is automatically upgraded to an MA.
Fake account.

That 'upgrade' is optional. Also, it's not a real MA... 😃

Did you go for your MA ceremony Kian?

No, never did - I do believe the MA Oxons and Cantabs (as they're called) are widely acknowledged to be quite completely pointless. :)

So, jokes aside, I’m actually asking as an editorial question: why does LI place so much emphasis on where folks went to law school?

Plus there’s no mention of the embarrassing stint at the McDonalds of law firms, Baker and Mackenzie 🤷‍♂️

Why is Baker Mackenzie the Mcdonalds of law firms. Please elaborate.

You’re right, it’s not relevant, and you’re wrong, no she didn’t.

People usually crib about how painful Zia is but what people tend to underestimate or not understand that once you work at AZB, the brand will last forever. Amarchand was like this before the split. The choice is simple. If you want to be one of the best lawyers, join Zia. If you are happy being a mediocre and who care more about your weekend or 8 hrs of sleep, forget AZB. By no means, is one better than the other. To each his own.

Bit random to suggest that people that are not at AZB are mediocre. Monkeys abound everywhere, as do a few good people, usually in the ratio of 10:1.

So if you're not willing to work weekend after weekend for less pay then you're mediocre? Some appreciation you give to people who work for you.

But what if I work/worked at AZB Delhi and haven't seen Zia once or worked with Zia once in many years. So am I mediocre or the fact that I work at one (but fully separate) arm of the AZB still gets the protection of being non-mediocre?

Also Ajay, Cyril, Shardul, Khaitan, Nitish, Jyoti, and the likes who haven't worked under Zia would qualify as mediocre?

Also to end "To each his own" after calling everyone else mediocre seems a little contradictory. Especially if we choose to not base our entire self worth on working throughout our life and under Zia (and choosing to live a little on those potential billable days called weekend). Capitalism shines strong with this Harvey Spectar.

The problem with all law firms is the thinking that they are a favour to this world, they are the best legal brains and so everyone should give up sleep, rest, family time, leisure etc.Foesbt work that way but to understand that you need to come down from that high throne. There are a ton of independent practitioners smarter, savvier, maybe even richer and most definitely better than these "BRAND"s,infact these brands go to them for consultation. The only thing is these guys don't have time and don't bother with pomp and show articles or branding.
As for your statement, that brands are forever, they are not.Thats only and only Diamonds.

Looks like w&c has caught the designation bug started by the likes of AMSS which made 8 year pqe associates into "partners". Slow clap. Let's see how long this works for them. I'm betting he's at Amarsinji's door for a job before the next general election.
